Marad is a user-friendly, affordable, and

therefore widely accepted software appli-
cation for Fleet Management. Whether it
concerns Maintenance, Inventory, Purcha-
se, Certificate- and Document manage-
ment, Crewing- or Safety matters, Marad
provides for it.

Marad is type approved by DNV-GL, an in-

ternational accredited registrar and clas-
sification society headquartered in Høvik,
Norway. The company currently has about
14,500 employees and 350 offices opera-
ting in more than 100 countries, and pro-
vides services for several industries inclu-
ding maritime, renewable energy, oil & gas,
electrification, food & beverage and health-
care. It was created in 2013 as a result of a
merger between two leading organizations
in the field - Det Norske Veritas (Norway)
and Germanischer Lloyd (Germany).

Option 1 - Vessel always online
On board and in office the Marad 5 Office
version is installed. Marad obtains the data
from the Central Database via internet.
No database on board or in office. No
synchronisation needed. A stable internet
connection is required. Marad is also
accessible via the web application (www.
marad5.com). If desired to always work in
this way, no installation is needed.

MANAGEMENT

Marad has several powerful tools available to

manage fleets of vessels.

• FleetView functions (fleet-wide overview per

module, TMSA/OVMSA reports, etc.).
• Central (generic) management of items in
Maintenance, Inventory, Certificates, Safety
and QHSE Checklists (changes to items are
distributed to all linked vessels).

In office the Marad 5 Office
version is installed, and on board
of the vessel the Marad Vessel
version. On board, Marad has his
own database, and a constant
internet connection is not needed.
Synchronisation of the data with
the Central database will be done
if internet is available.
This installation is the same as a regular
offline installation, but has the possibility
to add multiple computers to the Marad
network. One computer serves as a server/
master while the other computers connect
with the onboard network database. The
board database synchronizes with the online
central database. This setup requires special
files which MaraSoft can provide.

 As a vessel owner, our core business is sailing. We used to do this the
conventional way with excel sheets, the experience of our sailors and our
common sense.
To improve the efficiency of the jobs on board we started using Planned
Maintenance for our engineers. To our opinion is this a tool to help the
engineers with their maintenance schedules. Also important is the easy use
for all personnel on board. There Marasoft really stands out, the simplicity of
the program, the clear overview. For us as office back up for the vessels we
experience the contact with Marasoft positive. We always have immediate
feedback when we have questions or requests.
We furthermore appreciate that our opinion about the outlay and
improvement inputs are taken seriously. Our crew members are now familiar
and are happy with Marad, also because there is direct contact from the
vessel to the Marasoft office when necessary. The crew is requesting more
use of the program such as the module purchasing and crew documents. Last
but not least we receive positive feedback from Recognized Organizations
during inspections or audits. When Marad is implemented, up to date and
the crew can show the effectiveness inspections are smooth.

MAINTENANCE

Marad allows you to set up a maintenance system

by using tree-like structures (e.g. SFI). It is possi-
ble to attach maintenance jobs to components and
sub-components. Marad will warn you when a job
has to be done.

tob e executed, history, overdue maintenance,
repairs, docking jobs, critical equipment, etc.

We have been working with the Marad maintenance program for around
3.5 years and we are very pleased with it. It is simple to operate and very
easy to use. Marad makes it possible for us to perform maintenance and
crew management as good and as carefully as possible, and in this way we
prevent us from being overtaken by events and we keep control. If we en-
counter problems at sea, then the support at Marad’s office is exceptionally
good. The men there are well aware of what is going on and if we have a
question or run into a problem, they immediately resolve that for us. The
people at Marad are always open to new ideas and / or adjustments. I am

‘Can you write a little program to manage the
maintenance of the fishing trawler I work on?’
With those words, friend Pieter van Urk enters the
room, and with a sigh he sits down. As an engineer
on a large fishing trawler, he constantly runs into
the lack of overview in regards to maintenance of
the many machines in the engine room. Gerrit de
Wit, fascinated by the power of automation and
programming in yacht building for years, looks up
and says: ‘Good idea! When should it be ready?’
It is 1999, the birth year of Marad. A time in which
computers are slow, and screens bulky and heavy.
Marad is installed with two of those black square

floppies. And it works! The users of the first hour
are enthusiastic and bombard us with ideas and
wishes. That is so contagious that we spend a large
part of our free time on it, especially when we hear
that users are very content, it always gives satisfac-
tion and energy to further develop and improve
Marad. More and more customers are starting to
use Marad.
Now, twenty years later, ‘that little program’ is still
evolving. Because the requirements to the ship-
ping industry have become more demanding and
extensive. A few examples are the strict safety re-
quirements, CO2 emissions, privacy legislation,
and the ever-present pressure to remain com-
petitive. With eight people constantly program-
ming and testing to implement these functions
into Marad, the question ‘When should it be
ready?’ is still heard very often.
Twenty years of listening to the practitioners on
board, and to those who take care of everything
at the office, have made Marad an extremely
useful tool that is experienced as essential both
on board and in the office. At the beginning,
Marad was mainly focused on the ship itself.
Gradually more attention was paid to the fleet
of which a ship is a part and to the wishes of the
people in the office. As a result, Marad is not
only used as a Ship Management System, but
also as an efficient Fleet Management System.
Listening to the wishes of Marad users has be-
come our second nature. We are pleased to
hear that Marad works very well and, despite
the many functions and possibilities, is experi-
enced as being very user-friendly. As that satis-
fied customer once put it: ‘You have written a
nice little program.’
