PUNCTUATION

1. Period/Full Stop (.)- To end a sentence.


2. Comma (,)-
3. Exclamation Mark (!)
4. Question Mark (?)
5. Colon (:)- To make a list
6. Semi-Colon (;) – in place of a full stop, when two independent clauses
are joined, to show a change in idea.
7. Ellipsis (…)- Continuation of a sentence, To create suspense, To show a
thought but not quite the end of a sentence.
8. Hyphen (-)- To join two words to make a compound word.
9. Dash (--)- Sometimes used in place of a comma in complex sentences to
show a change in idea, sometimes to show a list.

10. Inverted Commas (“…”)- In direct speech


11. Square brackets ([…])- To edit something in a sentence, or to
show the implied meaning in a sentence.
12. Parentheses (())- To show a change in idea in place of a comma.
