adding ice on it?
C. Engage
Activity: How Fast Does Coffee Dissolve in Hot water?
Cold water?
Materials:
tap water , hot water, ice water, measuring cup
3 teaspoon coffee, measuring spoon, stirrer/spoon,
stopwatch or watch with seconds, 3 containers/clear
glasses

1. Measure 1 cup of hot water, tap water and cold water

respectively in three clear glasses. Look at the diagram of the
set up.
2. Place one teaspoon of coffee into a container with hot
water.
3. Stir the solution.
4. Measure the time it takes for the coffee to dissolve
completely in hot water. Record your observation in the table
below.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 , with the tap water.
6. Repeat steps 1-4 with the ice water.

D. Table: The Effect of Temperature on Dissolving

Does coffee dissolve in Hot water? Tap water? Cold water?
Explore

E. How long does it take for coffee to dissolve in;

A. hot water?
Explore
  B. tap water?
C. cold water?
F. 1. How does temperature affect solubility?
Explain 2. Does coffee dissolved faster in hot water?

G. Why do you think fish kill is rampantly reported during El Niῆo

H.
Elaborate What is the best way to make “cold coffee”?

Multiple choice; Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. Which process/processes affect the speed of dissolving?
a. stirring only
B. particle size, temperature, stirring
c. particle size only
d. type of the container used

2. Most solute dissolves faster in a solvent when the

temperature is increased . Which solvent/solute listed below is
an exemption to this rule?
a. water/oxygen
b. copper/zinc
c. water/sugar
d. water/salt

3. In a science class, learners were having experiment on the

I. Evaluate
rate of solubility of materials. Their solvent consists of iced
water and hot water. All solid solutes dissolve faster in hot
water. What does their observations indicates?
I. The solid solute they use are less dense, that’s why it
dissolves in hot water.
II. All solid solutes are consist of a very fine particles.
III. Solid solutes dissolves faster because of a high
temperature of water.
IV. Temperature greatly affects solubility of solid
solutes.

a. I only b. II only c. II and III only D. III and IV only

A group of students was asked to investigate how fast sugar

dissolves in cold and in hot water?
4. If this is going to be a fair test, what variables should they
control?
A. Amount of water and sugar in each cup, method of
stirring, time when the solid is added to water, how
long each solution is stirred.
b. Amount of water and sugar in each cup, method of
stirring, how long each solution is stirred.
c. Amount of sugar in each cup; method of stirring,
time when the solid is added to water, how long each
solution is stirred.
d. Amount of water in each cup, method of stirring,
time when the solid is added to water; how long each
solution is stirred.

5. What is the dependent variable (what is being measured)?

I. The temperature of water.
II. The amount of sugar.
III. The length of time that sugar completely dissolves
in hot water.
IV. The length of time that sugar completely dissolves
in cold water.

a. I only c. II and III
