WHAT IS
DEVELOPMENT ?

DEVELOPMENT
can be defined as "progressive
,orderly and continuing changes over
time in a person's physical and
neurological structure
CHILD DEVELOPMENT
-it refers to the sequence of physical,
language, thought and emotional
changes that occur in a child from birth
to the beginning of adulthood.
THE 4 STAGES
OF CHILD
DEVELOPMENT
INFANCY
(BIRTH TO 2 YRS OLD)
-the child is totally dependent on the

caregiver for the fulfilment of his/ her

needs. The child experiences rapid
growth during this period.
CHILDHOOD
(EARLY- MIDDLE CHILHOOD)

The child refines his/her skills

he/she learned in earlier years, from

basic to more complex skills; he/she
also learns new skils The most rapid
period of growth and development
is seen in early childhood.
ADOLESCENCE
(11 to 14 years old)
This stage is marked by
puberty when a child
undergoes a series of changes
in the body
ADULTHOOD
This is the period when an

individual has reached his/her

maturity. This is usually above 18
years of age.
HISTORY OF
CHILD-REARING
In the MIDDLE AGES( 800s/1300s),
the church did not approve of " family planning" so
birth rates were very high .Women usually gave birth
to 12 to 14 children .So during that time the life span
was around 30/40 years and also the mortality of
the children was very high 3/5 died before reaching
the adult stage.
The RENAISSANCE PERIOD
( 1300s - 1600s).
There was a rebirth of learning people
began to think about their place in the
world and the children see as individuals
with right.
In 1639, John Locke had his theory of TABULA RASA
( blank slate) this theory said that our brains are
empty at birth and waiting to be filled with
experiences, That time when the parents and teachers
realized they have to control children's experience
using the blank space .That what's the first time the
"CHILDHOOD" was seen as a separate development
stage.
At the start of the INDUSTRIAL AGE ( late 1700s to late
1800s),there was the rise of industrialization and machinery.

And last at the start of MODERN AGE ( 20th century early

1900s) the law begin that the children under 16 should not be
made to work in factories although they would allowed to work
in family farm. This was the first time the term "CHILDHOOD"
became a legal definition ( early twentieth century)
This led to Compulsory Education that we should learn the
academics were introduced around the time of World War II
,the concept of adulthood was around 18 years of age
commonly due to drafting into the army.

In the early twentieth century, the term "childhood" was

divided into stages . Adolescence, in terms of biology, begins
with puberty and ends in a cultural recognition of adulthood
by the stage 18 ,a legal age.
THREE DOMAINS OF CHILD
DEVELOPMENT
1. Physical domain is about the
measurable,visible changes in
the body of a child from birth
to old age

The Physical domain includes ;

growth of the body size , proportions,
appearance, brain development ,sensory
capacities ,motor skills and overall
physical health.
Motor development is part of physical
development, and refers to the growth in the
ability of children to use their bodies and
physical skills.

Skills
Gross Motor Fine Motor Skills
-major movements of the -movements of fingers
body involving large and hands
muscles
Adaptive development
it refers to the development of behaviors and self-help
skills that assist children in coping with the natural and
social demands of the environment, including sleeping,
feeding, mobility, toileting, dressing, and higher-level social
interactions.
2. Cognitive domain
-aims to develop the mental skills and the
acquisition of knowledge of the individual.
The cognitive domain encompasses of six
categories which include knowledge;
comprehension; application; analysis;
synthesis; and evaluation.

Jean Piaget is famous for his

theories regarding changes in
cognitive development that occur
as we move from infancy to
adulthood.

A child’s cognitive development is

not just about acquiring knowledge,
the child has to develop or construct
a mental model of the world
Language development in children is the process
through which we gain the ability to comprehend and
communicate through speech.

Language development or commmunicative domain

is about how a person's language or communication
skills develop from crying to laughing, to babbling, and
then to talking This involves one's ability to
comprehend, use, and manipulate
FOUR ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE
3. Psychosocial domain or sometimes known as
affective is the development of emotions,
temperament and social skills. The way children play
in an early childhood program shows the type of
atmosphere it is. It shows the emotional, social,
creative and spiritual components of it.
Social development is about improving the well-being of every
individual in society so they can reach their full potential.

Emotional development refers to the ability to recognize, express,

and manage feelings at different stages of life and to have empathy
for the feelings of others

Socioemotional development means how children start to understand

who they are, what they are feeling and what to expect when
interacting with others.
An example of Psychosocial development through the years
is when self- awareness develops during infancy. Then during
early childhood, independence and self-control improves.
During middle childhood, peers become more important to
the child. And during adolescence, there is a search for
identity.
We should take note, however, that development in one area
affects the development in other areas. Even if we study each
domain separately, we should remember that these are all
interconnected.
