STARTING - GENERAL - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________________

1. _______
General
(Ref. Fig. 001)
The engine pneumatic start system is used for normal engine starts and
inflight restarts. The system utilizes pressurized air to drive an air
turbine starter at high speed. The starter drives the engine high pressure
rotor through a reduction gear and the engine accessory drive system. The
air which is necessary to drive the starter comes from one of the following
three sources:
- the aircraft APU
- the aircraft other engine
- a ground power unit.

Description
(Ref. Fig. 003)
The engine pneumatic start system installation of each engine consists of:
- one pneumatic starter (Ref. 80-11-00)
- one starter control valve (Ref. 80-11-00)
- a three piece air supply duct from the pylon assembly interface (Ref.
80-13-00).
The air supply is controlled by a Starter Control Valve (SCV) which is
pneumatically operated and electrically controlled. In the event of a
failure, the SCV can be operated by hand. The EEC commands the SCV open at
the initiation of the start. When N3 reaches 50 %, the EEC commands the SCV
closure. The SCV position switches should indicate a closed valve by 60 % N3
and should close before 10 seconds.
The starter features a full range centrifugal clutch which remains engaged
until the SCV closes; when this occurs the starter clutch will automatically
disengage.
The engine motoring and starting controls are located on the following
cockpit panels:

- ENG MASTER control panel 125VU, (located on the center pedestal)
- ENG MAN START control panel 212VU, (located on the overhead panel).
The starting sequence can be interrupted at any time by placing the
ENG/MASTER switch in the OFF position. When the ENG/MASTER switch is placed
in the OFF position, the HP fuel SOV is closed and the engine is shut down.
Three procedures are applicable for engine starting and motoring (Ref. 74-30
-00):
- normal autostart sequence
- normal manual start sequence
- normal engine cranking sequence.

4. Operation/Control
________________________________
and Indicating
The function of the engine pneumatic start system is to provide sufficient
torque to accelerate the engine to a speed such that it can Light off and
continue to run unassisted.
The SCV, upon receiving an electrical signal, opens to allow air to flow to
the pneumatic starter which produces the torque to accelerate the engine.
When the engine has attained a predetermined speed, removal of the
electrical signal shuts the SCV, thereby shutting off the pneumatic supply
to the starter.
As the engine continues to accelerate, the pneumatic starter clutch
automatically disengages the starter.

CRANKING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
____________________________________

1. _______
General
There are two modes of engine cranking in which the engine can be motored,
dry or wet. To dry motor an engine is to turn the engine with the pneumatic
starter (5000ES) (Ref.80-11-00) but with fuel and ignition off. To wet motor
an engine is to turn the engine with the pneumatic starter (5000ES), but
with fuel on and ignition off.

2. __________________
System Description

A. Air Supply

(1) The air for the pneumatic starter is supplied through ducts connected
to the engine pylon. Refer to 80-13-00 for a full description of the
starter ducts.

(2) The air to turn the pneumatic starter is supplied from one of the
sources which follows:
- the other engine through the cross-bleed system
- the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)
- a ground air supply source.

B. Dry Motor

(1) The engine can be dry motored for the procedure which follows:
- to remove any fuel that has collected in the combustion chamber

(2) To dry motor an engine, the Engine Electronic Controller (EEC)

(4000KS) (Ref. 73-21-00) opens the Starter Control Valve (SCV)
(4005KS) (Ref. 80-11-00). Starter air flows through the SCV to the
pneumatic starter (5000ES) (Ref. 80-11-00) which turns the engine.
The Pressure Raising and Shut Off Valve (PRSOV) in the Fuel Metering
Unit (FMU) (4071KS) (Ref. 73-21-00) stays closed and both ignition
systems are off.

C. Wet Motor

(1) The engine can be wet motored for the procedure which follows:
- to do a check for fuel leaks.

(2) To wet motor the engine, the EEC (4000KS) (Ref. 73-21-00) opens the
(SCV) (4005KS) (Ref. 80-11-00). Starter air flows through the SCV to
the pneumatic starter (5000ES) (Ref. 80-11-00) which turns the engine
The PRSOV in the FMU (4071KS) (Ref. 73-21-00) is opened by the
selection of the the ENG MASTER switch (Ref. 74-30-00) to the ON
position. The engine exhaust nozzle must be monitored for fuel vapor.

and Indicating
The engine can be dry or wet motored by the selection of the applicable
engine control switches in the cockpit. The ENG MAN START switch (Ref.
74-30-00) is used for both wet and dry motor procedures. When wet or dry
motor is selected air is supplied to pneumatic starter (5000ES) and the
engine will start to crank. When dry motor is selected the engine will turn
but both engine fuel and ignition will be off. When wet motor is selected
the engine will turn but engine fuel on but ignition will be off. When an
error occurs during an engine motor procedure (dry or wet) a warning message
is shown on the Engine/Warning Display in the cockpit. the warning message
tells the crew about the error and gives the procedure to be followed.

PNEUMATIC STARTER AND VALVE SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________________________________

1. _______
General
The engine pneumatic start system supplies the power which turns the High
Pressure (HP) rotor to start the engine. The system is used for ground start
and also to supply the necessary power to start the engine during flight.

2. __________________
Component Location

A. Pneumatic Starter
(Ref. Fig. 001)
The pneumatic starter is attached to an adapter by a Quick Attach-Detach
(QAD) clamp. The adapter is attached with bolts to the front face of the
external gearbox module.

B. Starter Control Valve

(Ref. Fig. 002)
The Starter Control Valve (SCV) is located on the lower right side of the
LP compressor case. It is installed between the upper starter air duct
and the lower starter air duct.

3. System
__________________
Description
The pneumatic starter uses air to turn the HP rotor through an external
gearbox module input shaft. The starter control valve controls the flow of
air to the pneumatic starter. The air supplied to the pneumatic starter will
turn an output shaft which is connected to the external gearbox module input
shaft. The external gearbox module input shaft will then turn the HP rotor.
As the HP rotor speed increases it will eventually have the applicable speed
necessary to start the engine.

4. ____________
Power Supply

A. Air Supply
The air used to operate the pneumatic starter comes from:
- a ground pneumatic connection
- the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit)
- an adjacent engine which has started.

B. Power Supply
During Engine starter assisted starts EEC/PCU regulated Aircraft 115V AC
power, regulated to DC in the PCU, is used by the EEC to augment
energization of the SCV Solenoid only until sufficient power becomes
available from the Engine Dedicated Alternator. Power is derived from the
EEC Channel A and B supplies and provided independently to each winding
of the dual wound SCV solenoid.

The starter control valve is electrically controlled by the EEC. When a
solenoid in the starter control valve receives an electrical signal from
the EEC it causes the valve to open. When the electrical signal is
removed from the solenoid it will cause the starter control valve to
close.

5. Component
_____________________
Description
The primary components of the engine pneumatic start system are as follows:
- pneumatic starter
- starter control valve
- starter air ducts (Ref. 80-13-00)

A. Pneumatic Starter
(Ref. Fig. 001, 003)

(1) The pneumatic starter is a pneumatically operated turbine unit that

turns the HP rotor through an external gearbox module input shaft.
The external gearbox module input shaft turns the HP rotor and the
speed increases to a condition for the engine to start.

(2) The primary components of the pneumatic starter are as follows:

- a turbine rotor
- a reduction gear configuration
- a clutch mechanism
- an output shaft.
These components are contained in a case which includes a containment
ring, an air intake and an exhaust. The containment ring is made to
contain a failure of the turbine rotor.

(3) The pneumatic starter case has an oil fill plug, an oil level
overflow plug and a drain plug. The drain plug has a magnetic chip
detector to catch any metal particles for inspection. There is also
an oil level sight glass to measure the oil level.

(4) The pneumatic starter is supplied with air from the starter control
valve. This air turns the starter turbine rotor and is released
through the air exhaust. The starter turbine rotor transmits torque
through a reduction gear configuration. The reduction gear
configuration has a cluster gear, pinion gear and a ring gear. This
configuration will change the output of the starter turbine rotor.
The starter turbine rotor output will change from a high speed, low
torque output to a low speed, high torque output.

(5) The torque output is then transmitted through the primary ratchet on
the ring gear hub to the clutch mechanism. The clutch mechanism has
primary pawls which engage with the primary ratchet to turn the
output shaft.

(6) When the starter control valve stops the air supply to the pneumatic
starter it will decrease the speed of the starter turbine rotor. The
primary clutch pawls disengage from the primary ratchet when no
torque is transmitted and the turbine rotor will continue to decrease
in speed until it stops. The output shaft and the external gearbox
module input shaft will continue to turn while the HP rotor speed
increases. If the output shaft speed goes above a specified value,
centrifugal force will disengage the primary clutch pawls from the
primary ratchet.

(7) During a normal start as given above, the primary clutch pawls are
engaged with the primary ratchet to turn the output shaft. They are
engaged from zero rpm to 5300 rpm N3 (pneumatic starter disengaged at
this speed). The primary clutch pawls should disengage at a speed of
3300 rpm N3, but they stay engaged while torque is transmitted. The
secondary pawls are lifted and can be engaged at a speed of 2000 rpm
N3. At 2000 rpm N3 and above the secondary pawls remain lifted, but
do not engage while the primary pawls are engaged.

(8) During an unsatisfactory start where the pneumatic starter is set to

engage at a speed above the primary clutch engagement speed, the
secondary clutch gives a smooth engagement. The sequence for this is
that as the pneumatic starter speed increases to 1800 rpm, the
secondary pawls are lifted. The secondary ratchet which turns faster
(turns at engine speed) then engages with the secondary pawls. This
continues until the pneumatic starter speed is the same as the engine
speed, then the secondary ratchet disengages from the secondary
pawls. The secondary pawls then engage with the ring gear hub to turn
the output shaft.

B. Starter Control Valve

(Ref. Fig. 002, 004, 005)

(1) The starter control valve controls the flow of air to the pneumatic
starter.

(2) The primary components of the starter control valve are as follows:
- a valve assembly
- an actuator assembly
- a rate control servo
- a solenoid.

(3) The valve assembly has a butterfly valve. The butterfly valve is
installed in a cylindrical valve body and is connected to a shaft
which turns on bushes. A seal ring is installed on the butterfly
valve to keep air leakage between the valve and the body to a
minimum.

(4) An extension of the butterfly valve shaft has a visual control valve
position indicator. The extension also has a square socket to permit
manual operation of the butterfly valve. The control valve position
indicator operates an electrical position switch which has two
microswitches. One microswitch is connected to the EEC channel A and
the other microswitch is connected to the EEC channel B. These
microswitches give an indication to the EEC of the valve position.

(5) The actuator assembly has an actuator which is operated by a

solenoid. The actuator has a pistons which is attached to the end of
a shaft installed in a cylinder. There is always a small leakage of
air around the piston. The leakage rate changes with the effect of
temperature and piston ring bore wear. The assembly is set in the
closed position by a spring. Movement of the actuator is transmitted
to the butterfly valve shaft to open and close the valve.

(6) The rate control servo has a rate control orifice and a filter. It is
used to control the rate at which the butterfly valve opens. The rate
control servo gets an input of valve inlet pressure and actuator
pressure and operates to open the butterfly valve at a constant rate.
This is done independently of usual leakage around the piston.

(7) The solenoid body contains a ball valve, a spring loaded plunger and
an electrically operated solenoid. The solenoid contains a double
coil assembly which is controlled by electrical signals from the EEC.
One of the solenoid coils is connected to the EEC channel A and the
other solenoid coil is connected to the EEC channel B. In usual
operation the EEC will energize or not energize the two coils at the
same time. Each of the two coils can operate the solenoid
independently.

C. To open the starter control valve

(1) Air from immediately upstream of the butterfly valve is filtered and
goes to the solenoid. When the solenoid is energized, the spring
loaded plunger opens to let air get to the rate control servo. At the
same time the ball valve closses the vent. The rate control servo
supplies air to the piston which control the rate at which the valve
opens. The air pressure on the piston is more than the force of the
actuator spring so it will move the piston and compress the actuator
spring. As the piston moves with the shaft, the torsion spring moves
to open the butterfly valve.

 TRENT 700

SERIES ENGINES

D. To close the starter control valve

(1) When the electrical power is removed from the solenoid, the spring
loaded plunger closes the air supply to the rate control servo. At
the same time the ball opens the vent and the air pressure on the
piston is released. The actuator spring force on piston then closes
the butterfly valve. The actuator spring will also close the
butterfly valve if there is a decrease in air pressure upstream of
the butterfly valve.

E. Manual operation of the starter control valve

(1) If a pneumatic failure occurs, the butterfly valve shaft can be

turned manually to open the butterfly valve.
A manual override of the starter valve shall be possible by applying
a spanner to the square socket provided. Access shall be available
through a panel in the FCD.

6. Operation/Control
________________________________
and Indicating
(Ref. Fig. 003, 004, 005)

A. Operation

(1) When the solenoid is energized by the EEC, the actuator moves and
opens the butterfly valve. When the butterfly valve opens (between 2
and 7 degrees from the valve closed position), the microswitches
close and an indication is given to the EEC that the valve is open.

(2) The pneumatic starter is then supplied with air from the starter
control valve which turns the starter turbine rotor. Movement is
transmitted through a reduction gear configuration and clutch
mechanism to turn the output shaft.

(3) When the electrical power is removed by the EEC and the solenoid is
not energized, the actuator moves to close the butterfly valve. When
the butterfly valve is between 5 and 2 degrees of the valve closed
position, the microswitches open. An indication is given to the EEC
that the valve is closed.

(4) When the starter control valve stops the air supply to the pneumatic
starter, it will decrease the speed of the starter turbine rotor. The
clutch pawls will disengage from the ratchet gear and the turbine
rotor will continue to decrease in speed until it stops. The output
shaft and the external gearbox input shaft will continue to turn
while the HP rotor speed increases.

DUCTING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
___________________________________

1. _______
General
The air necessary for the starting comes from the duct connecting precooler
exchanger via a 4 in. (101.5998 mm) diameter duct to the SCV the ducting
system is composed of three pieces:
- one lower starter air duct
- one upper starter air duct
- one pylon duct.

2. Component
__________________
Location
(Ref. Fig. 001)
Starter air supply ducting is routed from the SCV on the left side of the LP
compressor case to the engine/pylon interface.

3. __________________
System Description

A. Start Air Ducts

(Ref. Fig. 001)

(1) The pneumatic starter is connected to the starter control valve by

the lower starter air duct. The upper starter air duct and pylon duct
are connected together and interface with the aircraft air duct. The
starter control valve is connected to the IP and HP bleed air system
by these ducts.

(2) The air duct flanges are connected together by vee band coupling
clamps. Air leakage is prevented by the E-type seals that are located
between the mating flanges. There are two flexible joints which let
the engine move (in relation to the aircraft pylon) without damage to
the ducts. These flexible joints also help to align the pylon duct
with the aircraft air duct. The air ducts are attached to the LP
compressor case by the duct supports.
