“manage updates” feature is missing in the mobile edition.

1.2.3 Integrating Windows 10 with Storage

The image demonstrates that Windows 10 installed on
devices like Personal Desktop, Personal 2-in-1 device or a
personal tablet the user gets an access to Personal cloud that is
One Drive to store the data. This is a consolidated scenario used
for Personal Users.

1.2.4 Corporate Network Scenario

The second type of integration suited for corporate
enterprises is that the user connects to his Corporate Desktop,
tablet or 2-in-one device and is connected to corporate network
of Jetking Company.
Now the user has 2 cloud options, one is Personal Cloud and
other storage option is OneDrive for Business. This is a corporate

storage of Jetking and as per company rules and policies the
personal OneDrive is disabled for corporate networks.

1.2.5 Windows 10 Integration with Azure AD

The third type of Cloud integration method is “Integrating a
Corporate Windows 10 enterprise client to Azure AD”. In this
scenario, we have Jetking corporate Network and Jetking
Company has on-premises Active Directory.
To make their Active Directory services more efficient, Jetking
plans to link its On-premises Server to the Azure Active
Directory.
With this integration, all the connected corporate clients get
seamless access to the service from Azure AD.

1.2.6 Upgrade Path to Windows

The table shows the Upgrade paths from older editions of
Windows to Windows 10.
Take a note that this process called as Upgrade-in-Place is
used to retain user-specific settings. It retains applications
and settings for the users.
Note - "Upgrade-in-Place” is in contrast with “Clean Install”.
A Clean Install, as the name suggests, cleans the user files
and a fresh installation of OS is done.

1.2.7 Migration
Migration is different from Upgrade. Migration has a separate
process for user-specific settings. Migration can be time-
consuming and it may require more storage.
Migration requires reinstallation of applications. Migration is
supported between the following operating systems that is from
Windows XP Operating system up to Windows 10 Operating
System.
Take a look at the above image. There are two types of
migration. They are:

Installing Windows 10 / 7
Migration from Your PC to the local storage.
Migration of user settings from older PC having older
operating system to a new PC having Windows 10 Operating
system.

1.2.8 Building images for Deploying Windows 10

For Deploying Windows 10, Microsoft has developed a tool
known as WADK.
WADK stands for Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit.
It can be downloaded freely from Microsoft website.
The following are the benefits of WADK :
It is used to build a WinPE (Pre-boot installation Environment)
boot image.
Used to create a windows setup answer file.
WADK is used to build a reference computer and this
reference computer is used to install the OS.
By using WADK we can modify and maintain installation
image.

1.2.9 WDK - Installation Process

The step by step process for WADK is as follows:

The various deployment scenarios in corporate companies
are illustrated in the tabular format as:

Scenario 1 - High Touch

This type of scenario is suited for individual home users o7r
small companies without IT staff.

Installing Windows 10 / 9
It uses retail version of the Operating system. User normally
uses custom or clean install.

Scenario 2 - LTI (Lite Touch Install)

This type of scenario is preferred for medium sized
organizations with IT staff. Usually associated with MDT that is
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. This MDT is initiated by Admin or
User.

Scenario 3 - ZTI (Zero Touch Installation)

This type of scenario is preferred for large organizations. It
requires Microsoft’s SCCM, System Centre Configuration
Manager. SCCM is used to manage all server and client devices.
SCCM can be integrated with MDT.

1.3 MDT
MDT, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit is a Microsoft based
enterprise solution for OS Deployment.
The Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) provides a unified
collection of tools, processes, and guidance for automating
desktop and server deployments. In addition to reducing
deployment time and standardizing desktop and server
images, MDT offers improved security and ongoing
configuration management.
Present version of MDT is MDT 2013.

Benefit of MDT are :

It can create a LTI (Lite Touch Install) boot image to build
reference computer image.
MDT can build media or network share known as wizard-
based installation.
MDT is also used to deploy VHD boot.
1.3.1 MDT Prerequisites and Setup Process

10 / Operating System - 1
Pre-requisites for MDT are :
Dot Net Framework 4.5 or higher should be installed.
WADK must be installed.
Sufficient HDD space for installation of OS and applications.

1.4 Understanding User State

User state is the data and settings specific to a particular
user, the data can be in the user profile (Documents) or
outside it. Settings might be OS or application-related.
Sometimes, Settings might be file-based or Registry-based.
Take a look at the image. It illustrates the “AppData Location”
for a specific user.
Note that, Local or Local Low Folder does not sync in
roaming profile scenario. Also, the files in the Roaming Folder
in the image, syncs in the roaming profile scenario.

Installing Windows 10 / 11
1.4.1 Need to Migrate User State
There are 2 methods to perform User state Migration. They
are:
WET : Known as Windows Easy Transfer. It can perform one-
on-one transfer for user profiles, currently not accepted and
not suited for large migrations.
USMT : Known as User State Migration Tool is most preferred
method for enterprises.
Also note that, migrating users state saves users from
recreating OS settings or application settings after an OS
migration.
Since user state migration takes care for Desktop Data and
User Documents, so migration helps in prevention of Document
loss.

1.4.2 USMT explained

Scan State : This command is used with Windows User State
Migration Tool (USMT) 4.0 to scan the source computer, collect
the files and settings and create a store.
Load State : This command is used with Windows USMT to load
the user settings on the destination computer, the files collected
from the Scan state command is copied to the destination
computer.

USMT Configuration Files :

MigApp.xml : Contains rules to migrate user profiles and data.
It Describes a "core” migration and Folders that will be migrated
are My Documents, My Video, My Music, My Pictures, Desktop
files, Start menu, Quick Launch settings and Favourites.
MigDocs.xml : Contains rules that locate user documents
automatically without the need to create custom migration files.
MigUser.xml : Contains rules for migrating user profiles and user
data.
Config.xml file specifies files and settings to be excluded

12 / Operating System - 1
from migration such as a user’s large folder full of images and
music.

1.4.3 User Profiles

User Profile is User-Specific. A user profile is a visual display
of personal data associated with a specific user, or a
customized desktop environment. A profile therefore refers to
the explicit digital representation of a person's identity.
It can be explained as, when an administrator creates a User
and the specific user logs in a local PC, then local user profile
is created.
The location for the Local User Profile is on the Local
machine inside the Appdata Folder of the specific user. To
see this, navigate to Local or Local Low folders.
If the User is a Domain User, the User’s Appdata is
configured as Roaming Profile. The core idea is that
irrespective of any machine, login inside the company, the
user gets its original Settings and data. The reason being
User’s changes sync to the network at logoff.
Mandatory Profile is used for Guest login, it does not save the
user changes and settings. It is Read-Only and the administrator
renames “ntuser.dat” file to “ntuser.man”.

1.4.4 Folder Redirection

Folder Redirection anchors the user profile folder at a
network location.
User’s computer points transparently to redirected location;
configuration is done through Group Policy.

1.5 Deploying Windows 10 Enterprise

Virtual Machines
Understanding Windows Client-Side Hypervisor,
The client-side Hypervisor known as Client Hyper-V was
introduced in Windows 8 Operating system. In Windows 10,

Installing Windows 10 / 13
the Client-side Hyper-V has got its features enhanced.

Need for client Hyper-V

Client Hyper-V is used to test or perform demo of operating
system features or particular application software.
Client Hyper-V can also be used to Run a legacy application
that are not supported by Windows 10
It is used for User support and Troubleshooting.

Features of Client Hyper-V are :

Client Hyper-V supports 32 bit or 64-bit Virtual Machines.
Used for storage migration or can also be used to create a
virtual storage pool.
Client Hyper-V uses VHD with maximum limit 2TB or VHDX
with maximum limit of 64 TB software disk files.
It can use local software Disk or LAN based storage also
known as NAS Network Attached Storage.
Client Hyper-V supports Import and Export of the VMs to
Server Hyper-V or any other machines Client Hyper-V.

1.5.1 Client Hyper-V Requirements

The Client Hyper-V Requirements are as follows :
A 64-bit CPU with assisted virtualization like Intel VTx or
AMD-V is required along with a 64- bit version of Windows
10.
SLAT, Second Level Address Translation, is a CPU feature
required for virtualization. It is also known as nested paging.
The machine must have 4GB or higher RAM.
Adequate Disk Space to Store the Operating System and the
Virtual Machines.
Since, virtual machines share memory with the Hyper-V
host, you will need to provide enough memory to handle the
expected virtual workload.

14 / Operating System - 1
1.5.2 Installation of Hyper-V feature in Windows 10
The various methods to install Hyper-V feature in Windows
10 are :
Method 1 : Enable the Hyper-V feature inside the answer
file that is used during the Hyper-V deployment.

Post-installation of the Hyper-V feature, you get a MMC,
Microsoft Management Console, snap- in, named as Hyper-
V manager.
To open Hyper-V Manager,
Open Run > virtmgmt.msc OR
Windows 10 Search, type “Hyper-V manager”.

1.5.4 Hyper-V Generations

During the creation of new Virtual Machine, the New VM
creation Wizard asks to select the Generation type of the VM.
There are 2 types of VM Generations:

Generation 1 VM
It consists of IDE and SCSI, Small Computer System
Interface controller, note that a controller is used to attach
Virtual Hard Disks.
It consists of Non-Secure BIOS boot.
COM port and Virtual Floppy is available to support legacy
machines.
Gen 1 VMs support Operating system from Windows XP and
higher.

Installing Windows 10 / 15
Generation 2 VM :
IDE controller is not accepted as the new generation of
hardware does not support IDE technology.
Generation 2 VMs support UEFI Boot. The secure boot option
is available and can be enabled. The benefit of secure boot
is, during booting if the operating system is not verified,
system will not start, and this is useful for prevention on
rootkit virus.
COM port and Floppy technology is obsolete and are
unacceptable in generation 2 VMs.
Generation 2 supports Windows 8 and higher OS that has
64-bit architecture.

1.5.5 Hyper-V Disk Options

Microsoft Client Hyper-V supports following Disk types:

Fixed Disk
Fixed Disk option uses maximum space. It is faster in
indexing and has no fragments.
Remember more fragmented data leads to slower
performance of disk. Fixed Disk is recommended for
business-critical servers that host databases like ERP, SQL
etc.

Dynamic Disk
It starts with small, grows as needed. The size increases on-
demand, with a maximum limit size as decided by the
administrator. Note Differencing is the default option while
creating virtual hard disk.

Differencing
This option is used for rapid deployment of virtual machines.
This option is used to link the parent virtual disk that

16 / Operating System - 1
has the operating system, to pass on the child hard disk. This
child hard disk is the clone of the parent VHD.

1.5.6 Hard Disk Formats (VHD or VHDX)

Virtual disk categories for Virtual Machines created on
windows 10 Client Hyper-V are,

VHD - Virtual Hard Disk

V HD was used for older versions of Operating Systems in
Hyper-V. o Maximum supported disk size is 2TeraBytes.

VHDX
V HDX is the new type of VHD also known as Extended VHD.
It is the default selection option.
V HDX has got better recovery features, Maximum supported
size is 64 Tera Bytes. It is supported by Windows 8 and
higher Operating systems.

VHDS - also known as Shared VHDX

V he maximum supported size is 64 Tera Bytes. It is a shared
disk generally used for clustering and failover storage.
Supported by Windows 10 and higher Operating System.

1.5.7 Hyper-V Networking

A virtual Switch is a virtual device with an objective to connect
VM to VM, and VM to Physical Host.
Various networking options, virtual switches, available in
Hyper-V are:
External Switch
Internal Switch
Private Switch

Installing Windows 10 / 17
External Switch : It enables communication between virtual
machines, and from Virtual Machine to Physical Host or other
machines connected through Physical network.

Internal Switch : It enables communication between virtual

machines and from virtual machines to the physical host.

Private Switch : It enables the communication between virtual

machines on the same physical host. Take a look at the image,
it illustrates the various virtual switch options available in Client
Hyper-V.

1.5.8 Optimizing VM resources

VM resources that can be in Client Hyper-V and Resources
that can be optimized are:
Virtual Hard Disk
You can use the option of "Edit Disk” as shown in the image.
The various options available are, Compact, Convert and
Expand. Additionally, the option of Merge Disk is available for
a Differencing Disk giving it privilege to merge to the parent
Disk. Inspect Disk option can be used to find if the VHD or
VHDX is proper or any links are broken.

Dynamic memory
It has maximum and minimum memory allocated to a specific
VM. Depending on the usage the VM toggles between the
assigned memory limits.
Also, Memory weight defines the memory priority of this
particular VM with reference to other VMs present in the
physical Host.
The third resource that can be optimized is bandwidth
Management on the Virtual Network Adapter connected to
the VM.
