1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this engineering specification is to provide designers and vendors
with the minimum technical requirements for the purchase, design, material
construction, inspection, testing, and shipping of outdoor enclosures for motor
controllers and switchgear for use in industrial installations owned by PDVSA.
Since PDVSA has decided to adopt the PIP (Process Industry Practices)
documents: ELSSG12: “Design and Fabrication of Outdoor Enclosures for
Motor Controllers and Switchgear” and ELSSG12D: “Data Sheet for Design
and Fabrication of Outdoor Enclosures for Motor Controllers and
Switchgear” as an integral part of the Engineering Design Manual (MID), the
requirements in this document are additions or modifications to the ELSSG12 and
the section/paragraph numbers and the associated headings used in this
document correspond to the ones used in ELSSG12.

These enclosures are not recomended for use in highly corrosive, dirty, or dusty
environments, such as some chemical plants or refining units.
