We often use the past continuous to talk about something in progress when
another action (usually in the simple past) took place.
We use the helping verb be, not do, in past continuous statements and
quetions.

Talk about a bad experience you had while on a trip. Answer the following
questions:
What happened?
Where were you when it happened?
What were you doing?
What did you do after it happened?
How did you feel? Why?
