WRITING FOR AND AGAINST ESSAYS

Techniques to start / end


To make our essay more interesting to the reader, we can use these
techniques:

 Address the reader directly


Have you ever thought about going offline for a while?
 Ask a rethorical question
Are smartphones really as useful as we think?
 Use a quotation
As Godfrey Reggio said, “It`s not thet we use technology – we live
technology”

Example: Foreign language is important nowadays. What exactly are the


advantages and disadvantages of doing this?
All in all, even though language learning is considered costly and time
consuming I believe it improves your job opportunities and makes you a
better person. As Haruki Murakami said, “Learning another language is like
becoming another person”

Characteristics of formal style


 Full verb forms:
We have become more and more dependent on our devices.
 The passive
Smartphones are used by people throughout the world.
 More complex sentences and linkers
Despite the cost of adopting new technology in schools, educators are
convinced that it improves students`performance.
TOPIC SENTENCES

We start main body paragraphs with a topic sentence that


summarises the paragraph`s main idea. Each topic sentence is
followed by supporting sentences that further expand the main idea.

Linking words: Opposing ideas

 Tecnology can be expensive although it can help make learning easy.


 Thecnology can be expensive in spite of/despite helping make learning
easy.
 Technology can be expensive in spite of the fact that / despite the fact
that it can help make learning easy.

1- Many adults use social media apps. They don`t use emojis as often as
teens do. (although)
2- Teens prefer to text rather than use messaging apps. They spend
more on text messages. (in spite of)
3- Most people only use tablets in the house. They are portable.
(despite the fact the)
4- Most smartphones have cameras. Many people own digital cameras
as well. (although)
