Song Begins - “You Can’t When You’re An Ant”
ANT:
Hello there, little- what are all of you? (looks closer) Oh. Fleas. You’re fleas. YOU ARE SO LUCKY!
You get to jump around all day, hang out with dogs- Do you have any idea how hard it is to be an
ant?
7
GRASSHOPPER:
Did somebody say, “Partytime?”
ANT:
Oh no. Look, Grasshopper: Winter will be here soon and there is SO much work to do!
GRASSHOPPER:
Work? Why would you spend your time working when you could be dancing?
See, these fleas know what I mean! Let’s get this party started!
GRASSHOPPER sings to the audience, but dances around and distracts ANT while she
continues to work.
(to the audience) Don’t be some sad creature who works all day! Spend your time dancing! Eating!
Living! Like me!
8
BIRD, AND GASTROPOD
ME-OW, MOO, BLAST, AND CHEER
WHEN THEY ALL APPLAUD ME- CLAP!
Song ends.
ANT:
All right, all right, enough of this, this fun. Winter will—
GRASSHOPPER:
Winter... sounds an awful lot like a winner. And I love to win! In Winter, I shall jump higher and
dance smoother and—
ANT:
NOT IN WINTER, NOT A CHANCE
LIFE IS NOT A SONG AND DANCE
THINGS SEEM EASY IN THE SUN
GO TO A PLAY
OR THE BALLET
MAYBE A DAY BY THE BAY
9
EACH MIGHTY FLAKE
MAKES THE GROUND QUAKE
GRASSHOPPER, WAKE UP
DON’T MAKE A MISTAKE
The world will be COVERED in snow. All the green you see around you will be smothered by
white. Do you finally get it?
GRASSHOPPER:
Of course I do!
He sings:
ANT:
NOT IN WINTER. SOON, BEHOLD:
EV’RY BUG HAS GOT A COLD
GRASSHOPPER:
WHEN I AM SEEN IN MY SPLENDOR
EACH PRETENDER
WILL BE WISHING THAT HE COULD BE
GREEN AS A LIZARD
IN A BLIZZARD
I’M TERRIFIC, MAGNIFICO—
10
ANT:
OH, THE WINT-RY
THINGS I’VE SEEN
SNOW ON EVERY EVERGREEN—
GRASSHOPPER:
GREEN AS A GECKO
I WILL ECHO LIKE A—
ANT:
LIKE IT OR NOT
YOU’LL BE DISTRAUGHT
GRASSHOPPER:
GOT IT!
YOU’LL FOCUS A SPOTLIGHT ON ME!
ANT:
Grasshopper! You haven’t experienced a Winter yet, but I sure have. In Winter, your resources
will disappear!
GRASSHOPPER (gasp):
You could sing with me!
ANT:
WHEN HARVEST TIME IS DONE
YOU WILL NOT HAVE ANY FOOD
11
GRASSHOPPER:
SINGING HERE WITH YOU IS FUN—
WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT FOOD?
ANT:
I SAID YOU WILL NOT HAVE FOOD
GRASSHOPPER:
CUT IT OUT, DUDE!
ANT:
DON’T BE SO RUDE!
GRASSHOPPER:
YOU SPOILED MY MOOD!
ANT:
LET ME CONCLUDE:
FACE IT: YOU WILL NOT HAVE FOOD!
GRASSHOPPER (shocked):
But I love food... I love to look at it and smell it and talk about it... but mostly, I love to eat it!
GRASSHOPPER:
Noooooooooooo!! What am I going to dooooooo??? Help, help, I feel myself wasting away! The
snow is closing in around me. It’s cold! Oh, so cold…
12
IF I WANNA DINE-
IF I WANNA CHEW-
IF I WANNA SNACK-
WHAT ‘M I GONNA DO??
IF I WANNA EAT—I CAN’T!
Please! Please let me help you gather food for the Winter! I’ll do anything!
ANT:
Well, sure. Actually, I was kind of thinking, if we work together, we will get done a lot faster…
and then maybe we could do something fun!? Oh, never mind, I am not really good at anything,
other than working.
GRASSHOPPER:
OF COURSE YOU ARE!!
Every creature on this planet has a talent; we just need to find yours!
He sings:
GRASSHOPPER:
Let’s try juggling!
GRASSHOPPER takes three juggling balls out of his pocket, and goes first. Juggles pret-
ty well. ANT tries: is unsuccessful.
13
That’s ok! Juggling takes a lot of practice. Just keep working on it! Let’s try dancing!
We hear “salsa type” music. GRASSHOPPER dances first. Does it pretty well. ANT tries:
is unsuccessful.
That’s ok, don’t get discouraged! Dancing takes a lot of practice, too. Gosh, well... let’s try singing!
GRASSHOPPER scats. ANT scats back. She is so good! They scat together!
See! You have been using your talent all along—you are a wonderful singer!
ANT:
Gee, you really think so?
GRASSHOPPER:
I sure do! All those fleas out there think so too! And fleas have excellent taste. You know what?
You’re also great at being a friend! When I picture myself wasting away this Winter-
ANT:
Hey, Grasshopper? You are a really good friend too. Say, let’s get to work! For some reason, I’m
excited about it now!
GRASSHOPPER:
SOME CREATURES LEARN
THAT THEY’VE GOTTA WORK EACH DAY
ANT:
SOME CREATURES EARN JUST A LITTLE TIME FOR PLAY
BOTH:
NOW WE CAN DO BOTH TOGETHER
I’M SO GLAD THAT YOU’RE/I’M AN ANT
ANT:
IF YA WANNA SING, THEN SING!
SINGING HELPS WITH EVERYTHING
14
GRASSHOPPER:
WINTER, SUMMER, FALL, AND SPRING
BOTH:
WE’LL ALWAYS SWING, SWING, SWING!
END

ABOUT THEATRE NOW NEW YORK
Theatre Now New York is an artist service organization dedicated to the development, produc-
tion, publication, and circulation of new short and long-form musicals by providing ongoing
support to emerging writers and their work. Theatre Now bridges the gap between early read-
ings and fully-produced theatrical runs by offering developmental productions to pieces that are
ready to live on their feet. We nurture diverse storytellers and innovative forms that showcase
untold stories and push the boundaries of musical theatre.
Theatre Now’s flagship event, SOUND BITES is an annual festival of 10-minute musicals
performed before a live audience. Since its inception, SOUND BITES has produced musicals by
over 60 new musical theatre writers, utilizing the talents of over 700 performers, musicians,
directors, choreographers, interns, and volunteers.
Theatre Now’s development programs for writers include our Musical Writing Lab, now
entering its second year. Select musical theatre writing teams experience weekly writing ses-
sions, early table reads of new work, readings and cabarets before invited audiences, and staged
industry readings in preparation for major production. Our Musical Writing Lab teams may also
submit full-length musicals for developmental workshops produced and presented by Theatre
Now in an off-Broadway theatre over a two- to four-week run.
Theatre Now furthers the visibility of our alumni writers with opportunities for network-
ing, publication, and future production. In addition, Theatre Now acts as theatrical licensor for
musical properties we have produced, offering musicals for production in schools, colleges, com-
munity theatres, other professional theatre companies, and venues across the country. By pro-
viding long-term support for rising artists and original forms, we entice unexpected audiences
to experience the emerging voices of musical theatre.
