IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Health is the sum of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Maintaining one's physical
condition and taking precautions to lower the risk of contracting various diseases constitutes
being healthy. While wellness is primarily being in good physical and mental health. Problems in
one area might affect the other since mental and physical health are intertwined. A happy
existence depends on having good health and wellness. Health and wellbeing is not one thing;
rather, it is a combination of behaviors, attitudes, and ways of being in the world that enable us
to develop our best selves.

Wellness is not just being in shape and having an intelligent mind but wellness is a full
integration of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. It is a complex interaction that leads to
quality of life. Whether you are 20 or 80, wellness is important, wellness is important as it is
directly linked with all the systems of our body including respiratory system, cardiovascular
system, digestive system, nervous system, muscular system etc.
Wellness helps in the improvement and toning up the muscles and generally the full body. A
toned body provides more strength, energy and flexibility, and can decrease the risk of
developing certain diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
Wellness also helps in fulfilling proper nutritional requirements. It is especially important as we
age because regular exercise and proper nutrition can help prevent a variety of diseases including
heart diseases, obesity, and fall risk behaviors.
It helps in better management of stress and tension. When a person is well he/she will be able to
cope with stressful situations more easily as compared to an unwell person because he she is not
ready of that situation. A fit person takes less stress and focus on the solution of the problem.
That is why he/she is less likely to develop anxiety.
Unforeseen situations that are never expected by anyone are a part of human life. There is always
a point in our life that something totally unexpected happens in our life that could be about
ourselves or the others that are dear to us. These situations need a lot of courage to cope with and
that courage is present in a well and fit person. 
Sports and physical activities play a major role in regulates and improves overall body
functions. 
On the other hand, PA (Physical Activities) contributes to preventing and treating a wide range
of diseases and can improve mental health, while also enhancing the quality of life and well-
being. Two studies concern, in particular, the implications of regular exercise for disease
prevention and treatment. Kanai et al. reported that the health utility score was 0.77 in stroke
survivors and was associated with the number of steps; the more stroke survivors walked, the
higher their health utility score. Turning to multiple sclerosis, it is well known that physical
inactivity reduces cardiorespiratory capacity, promotes physical deconditioning, and leads to
comorbidities such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and osteoporosis. In this field, Pau et al.
examined possible sex-related differences in the amount and intensity of PA performed by
people with multiple sclerosis and showed that the pattern for women was characterized by
greater sedentariness and less activity of light intensity than for men. Both studies quantitatively
assessed PA (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, MVPA) using accelerometers.

A healthy body makes a healthy mind. Health and wellness are a key to successful and better
lifestyle. Some benefits of maintaining health and wellness are given below:

 Increase metabolic rate

 Improves endurance – both physical and mental

 Makes you limber

 Enables weight loss and helps keeps it off

 Provides more muscular definition

 Improves digestion
 Enhances coordination and balance

 Tones and firms muscles

 Reduces blood pressure

 Decreased risk of heart attack

 Decreased risk of Osteoporosis

 Reduced depression

 Decreased stress levels

 Increased strength and stamina

 Sharpens mental focus

 Increased energy

Health and wellness encompass every area of our life including the way we treat our
environment. Consequently, we must always keep fit to have a fulfilling life, therefore, there
is a saying – health is wealth.
