Pencil Grasp Challenge: DAY 2

Look Through the Finger Scope: Open Thumb Web Space

MATERIALS: Tweezers, GOAL: Demonstrate the ability to
cotton balls, ice cube tray, use an open thumb web-space
dry erase marker when writing a list of words.

ACTIVITY: Finger Scope Draw and Pinch

Hold the tweezers between the thumb and pointer finger. The middle
finger should come along to help with the action needed to move and
pinch the tweezers.
The Power Fingers need to add power underneath so they should be
bent into the palm of the hand.
Make sure the thumb web space is nice and open and round.
Use the dry erase marker to draw a smiley face or star in the bottom of
an ice cube tray cube. Most dry erase markers should wipe away from
a plastic ice cube tray. Be sure to check this first in an inconspicuous
spot on the ice cube tray. If the dry erase marker doesn’t wipe away
from the ice cube tray you are using, use a washable marker to draw
on the ice cube tray. Warm, soapy water should clear away any marker
markings from the ice cube tray after this activity.
Next, show the child how to use the tweezers to pick up a cotton ball
or craft pom-pom.
They can move their hand and Finger Scope over the ice cube tray to
find the smiley face or star.
Once they see the marker drawn on the bottom of the ice cube space,
they can drop the cotton ball or craft pom-pom into that marked
cube.

POSITION CHECK:
Are the Action Fingers making a nice, round “O” shape? Are the Power
Fingers tucked into the palm? Are they doing their job and holding up
the Action Fingers? Can you see through your Finger Scope to the ice
cube tray below?

PENCIL GRASP CHALLENGE:

Hold a pencil or crayon (a small piece works best!) and ask the
student to draw small circles using the Action Fingers.
Go through the “Position Check” questions while drawing circles.
Then write a list of words.
