STUDENT ACTIVITY SHEET NO. __1__

(Individual Task)

Subject: General Chemistry II Topic: Intermolecular Forces and Liquids and Solids

Name: Date Given:

Due Date:

Learning Competencies:
● describe and differentiate the types of intermolecular forces
● predict the intermolecular forces possible for a molecule
● describe the difference in structure of crystalline and amorphous solids
Instructions:
● For item 1, draw the structure (matching the correct molecular geometry) in a paper and insert
the image in the designated space below the item.
● For items 6-7, write your answers in 2-3 sentences.

Activity:
1. Draw the correct Lewis structure of the following:
a. H2S
b. CCl4
c. SO2
d. SF6

2. List all types of IMFs that would occur in each of the following.
1. CH3CF3 : London dispersion, dipole-dipole
2. CCI4 : London dispersion forces
3. SO2 : London dispersion, dipole-dipole
4. BrF : London dispersion, dipole-dipole
5. PCI5 : London dispersion

3. HBr, O2, and CH3OH all have comparable molecular masses. List the dominant type of IMF for
the pure substances, then rank the strength of each compound based on IMFs within the samples.
(1 = strongest, 2 = in between, 3 = weakest)
Substance IMF Relative Strength
HBr Dipole-dipole 2
O2 London Dispersion 3
CH3OH Hydrogen bond 1

4. Underline all of the species below that can form a hydrogen bond in its pure form. Explain why
the other species couldn't hydrogen bond.

C2H6 CH3NH2 KCl CH3CH2CH2OH CH3OCH3

C2H6 could form hydrogen bond despite its hydrogen atoms as it does not have partial
negative or positive charges. Meanwhile hydrogen bonding is not possible with KCl as it does
not have hydrogen atoms and it is an ionic compound. For CH3OCH3, it could not form
hydrogen bonding as its hydrogen atoms are not directly bonded with the oxygen atom in
center.

5. Rank the following compounds from weakest intermolecular forces to strongest. Justify your
answers.

(2) H2S :Since it is a polar compound, it possess London dispersion and dipole-dipole
intermolecular forces

(3) I2 :It is a nonpolar compound and possess London dispersion forces

(3) N2 :It shows zero dipole moment and a nonpolar compound producing London
dispersion forces

(1) H2O :It is a polar compound and produces London dispersion, dipole-dipole, and
hydrogen
bond as it has hydrogen atom is paired with an oxygen atom.

6. Which properties of liquids are different from those of solids?

-There are various differences of liquids in solids in terms of its properties. Compared to solids, liquids
have molecules with definite distance from each other. It can also takes the shape of container as its
molecules are more free to move past another as solids can only occupy space as theirr size. Lastly, the
intermolecular force occuring in liquids are slightly weaker in which molecules in solids have definite
forces acting on it.

7. Why would we want to know the crystal structure of a solid?

-We should know about the crystal strcuture of a solid as it explains and portrays intermolecular forces
that occurs on a micro level. The components in a crystal structure are mainly held together by these
forces. We can learn about molecules ans ions that are in fixed shape compares to liquids and gases that
are in motion.

8. Some solids, such as tar, do flow. What is different about these solids?
-Depending on what type of of tar, they all have high viscosity but are still varing from each other. For
tar that are more on the solid form, it is viscous and elastic at the same time which has the properties of
both solid ans liquid.
