INTRODUCTION
SLR Consulting Limited (SLR) has been commissioned by FCC Environment to prepare soft
landscape planting proposals and a Specification for Soft Landscape Works in order to
discharge Condition 8 of the planning application 11/20000/AWD. The application covers the
proposed development of the Energy from Waste Facility and associated waste disposal
operations at Greatmoor, near Calvert, Buckinghamshire.
The following document is concerned with proposals for the EFW/IBA sites, Lower Greatmoor
Farm and the Habitat Management Area as set out on drawing GR 1/2 Site Layout in the
original Environmental Statement.
The specification should be read in conjunction with the Ecological Management Plan (EMP)
Ref: 408.00197.00780/EMP, produced for FCC Environment by SLR Consulting. Provisions
within the EMP for habitat creation and management should take precedence over this
specification.
This specification covers the soft landscape works to be undertaken by the landscape
contractor. Any detailed or opportunistic ‘ecological’ planting will be implemented via the
biodiversity partnership and the EMP.
Clauses set out within D20 Excavating and Filling have been included for completeness, but are
assumed to be the principal responsibility of the civil engineering main contractor.

555 PRUNING TREES AND SHRUBS
• Standard: To BS 7370-4.
• Special requirements: None.
615 TRIMMING FIELD HEDGES (IN HABITAT MANAGEMENT AREA AND ALONG
ACCESS ROAD)
• Refer to Ecological Management Plan Ref: 408.00197.00780/EMP for details of
appropriate management practices for hedges which are also to have a wildlife
corridor function. Timing of cutting is critical to wildlife habitats.
• Maintenance practices to be agreed with tenant farmer where appropriate:
Once the hedgerows have become of a sufficient size for trimming, landowners
would be encouraged to manage the hedge in accordance with Entry Level
Stewardship best practice. Amongst other practices, this could involve maintaining
hedgerows at a height and width customary to the local landscape but no less than
1.5m-2m in height and cutting each hedgerow no more than once every two or three
calendar years. Alternatively, one-sided management of the hedgerow could be
adopted if appropriate or a traditional hedge-laying or coppicing cycle could be
implemented whereby regular cutting of the hedgerow is minimised and a dense
livestock proof hedgerow becomes established.
• Operations: Trim to specified height and profile using suitable mechanical cutters.
657 HERBICIDE TO KILL REGROWTH TO ALL WOODLAND, WOODLAND EDGE AREAS AND
HEDGEROWS
• Type: Suitable foliar acting herbicide to kill regrowth.
• Timing: Allow recommended period for herbicide to take effect before clearing dead
weeds.
