 FOREWORD

DG hook is part of hoisting equipments for drilling rig and forms the moving element of the rig

with traveling block. Its main purpose is to hang DP string.

The hook works with the same-level traveling block and swivel together which conform to API

specification.

In order to help customers know about its performance and characteristics so that they can operate

the hook properly, this manual has a detailed description about technical specifications, structure

characteristics, operation and maintenance. Therefore, it is important to use this manual properly for

prolonging the service life of the hook and guarantee its safe reliability.

The manufactures have the right to change the mode and design of the hook without informing the

customer and don not take any responsibility for the customer.

1 Safety warning
The personnel who is occupied in installation, operation and maintenance of the generator house
should be trained and qualified, and carryout the work with operation certificate.
The operator must read the related manuals before start to operate the equipment carefully. He can
operate or maintain the equipment only when he knows well the functions and operation or maintenance
of the equipment.
There must be a chief principal for installation, operation and maintenance; and persons who
participate in the work should be assigned clearly; and detailed and reliable safety measures should be
taken.
All the equipments should be used strictly in accordance with their operating rules and related
safety regulations.
The equipment might not be operated in the dark unless there are lighting devices.
All the persons on duty must put on safety wares according to the related regulations.
The proper lifting and transportation equipments should be used for the solid control system.
It is forbidden to maintain and repair the equipment during its operation.
It is forbidden to overload the equipme

3 Structure descriptions
DG450 hook body, bail and bail holder are casted with special alloy steel. Tubular body, hook rod
are forged with alloy steel, so the hook has a relatively high load capacity. See the Fig 1 for its overall
dimension and main structure.

The hook bail (1) and bail holder (3) are connected by bail pin(2). Tubular body (8) and hook body
(10) are connected by left-hand thread, and lock block is used for keeping the thread from loosing. The
hook body and tubular body can move along the hook rod. There are bronze bushing (5) and (16) in the
tubular body and spring seat(17) for minimize abrasion of the hook rod.
There are two inner and outer springs installed in the tubular body, which can make pipe stand do
upward motion when the stand thread is loosed.
DG450 hook is manufactured wholly according to the specification of API SPEC 8A. The hook
body and the chamber in tubular body are divided into two parts by the spring seat which has fluid
passage when the hook has been assembled. When the tubular body is filled in with lubrication, a buffer
can eliminate axial impact which is produced during the hook body moving up and down, prevent
rebounding vibration while drill pipe is unthread and the connection thread damage of the drill pipe, and
also the lubrication can lubricate the bearing (18), brake unit (8) and other parts.
There is a safety locating unit in upper tubular body, the safety locating unit consists of spring (15)
installed in the tubular body upper end and the locating disc (4) which is pushed by spring, the locating
disc can slide up and down but cannot rotate. When the unloaded elevator has been lifted, the locating
disc contacts the annulus area of bail holder, the friction produced in the annulus area by spring can stop
the hook body swiveling, so the elevator ’s rotation can be prevented, it is good for derrick man to
operate. When the elevator is hanging drill string, the locating disc disconnects the elevator bail holder,

take no use of locating. The hook body can swivel freely, so there is no trend to rotate the traveling
block.
The braking unit (9)of the hook is composed of braking wheel, braking wheel shaft, detent, detent
shaft, spring and housing etc. It can lock the hook in any one of eight uniform positions, when press the
handle of detent ( “stop” end) down, the braking wheel is inserted in concave groove of the hook lock
loop, make the hook body cannot swivel; when press the handle of braking wheel shaft( “open” end)
down, the braking wheel leave away from the concave groove of the hook lock loop and locked by the
detent , make the hook body can swivel freely, the braking unit is operated by control rod, the control
rod can also be used to operate the detent(11) of safety pin body to open the safety pin body(13).

4 Operation and maintenance

4.1 Check before operation
a. check the split pins at both ends of the bail pin for ensuring reliability;
b. Check the screw on auxiliary hook for tightening
c. Check the braking unit and the detent of safety pin body for sensitivity and reliability
d. Turn the hook body with hand for its flexibility;
e. Check the lubrication conditions of locating disc, pin, push rod and detent
f. Check oil level and quality in the tubular body;

 g. Check if there is any oil leakage in all the sealing points when the hook is in horizontal and
vertical positions;
4.2 Operation of the hook
1) During drilling operation, pull down the handle of the “ stop” end of the brake unit with the
control rod and make the hook body locked for preventing the swivel rotation.
2) During tripping operation, pull down the handle of the “ open” end of the brake unit with the
control rod and make the hook body rotating to avoid wireline twisting which may cause drilling
accident.
3) When the swivel is hanged, pull down the detent in upper part of the safety pin body with the
control rod and open the safety pin body.
4) When the swivel bail is hanged, it is required to check the detent if it is locked well for
preventing the swivel bail from disengagement.
4.3 Maintenance of the hook
1) As soon as the hook has been impacted by heavy load ( bumping, cable drilling and accident
solving) check all main parts (hook body, kook opening, auxiliary hook and bail), when there is no
abnormal conditions then it can be put into use again.
2) The hook body, bail, bail holder and tubular body can not be cut by torch and welded
improperly.
3) Periodically check all loaded areas of the bail, the bail holder and the hook body, if any cracking
be found stop operation at once.

5 Lubrication
Inject 2# lithium base grease in the locating disc on safety locating unit, the pin of safety pin body,
push rod and detent, once a week.
Lubricate the bearing in tubular body and bushing etc with 20# machinery oil, fill amount is about
20 liters, the hook should be unload while it has being lubricated; open the two oil holes in tubular body,
add clean oil from one oil hole until the level of opposite oil hole is reached.

6 Transportation and packing

6.1 Each hook should be integrated for transportation. During transportation and installation, a crane
should be used for lifting, direct dragging on the ground is not allowed.
6.2 When the hook needs to be stored for a long time, it should be put in a dry and ventilated area
to avoid rustiness. It is required to drain out oil and deposit in the tubular body and coat anti-rust grease
on all surfaces before put it into warehouse.

Notes: The operator should not use the hook at its Max. load under－18℃.If you have to use it
under－18℃,you have to ensure its low-temperature performance and take necessary measures for
protection before operation.
