Operator Guide – Fire Alarm Panel
1) Overview
1.1) Fire Alarm Overview Drawing
The Fire Alarm panel is a conventional marine fire detection system in accordance with
classification requirements and EN54-2.
The Fire Alarm Panel, which is flush mounted in console, contains operator push-buttons and
LEDs. The rear side of the Fire Alarm Panel is equipped with detachable terminal strips for field
wiring. The Fire Alarm Panel has standard DIN size 144 x 144 mm for flush panel console
mounting.
The basic Fire Alarm Panel is designed for 4 zones and can be extended for up to 8 zones (2 x
Fire Alarm Panel) and for up to 12 zones (3 x Fire Alarm Panel).
The Fire Alarm Panel can be also configured as a Repeater panel connected via Ethernet to a
Master Fire Alarm Panel.
A text sheet with description for each Alarm and each Fault is inserted from the top of the panel.
The Fire Alarm Panel is equipped with the following operator lamps and buttons:
- 4x Fire Alarm lamp (red) for each zone. The lamp is also a pushbutton in order to
disable a zone in level 2 mode.
- 4 x Line Fault LED (yellow) for each zone, indicating a line failure
- 4 x Disable LED (yellow) for each zone, indicating that a zone has been disabled
- 1 x Fire Alarm LED (red) general, activated when one of the 4 zones is in alarm
condition
- 1 x General Fault LED (yellow) general, activated when internal or external fault is
detected
- 1 x Main supply fail LED (yellow), activated when mains supply is failing
- 1 x Back-up supply fail LED (yellow), activated when back-up supply is failing
- 1 x Earth failure LED (yellow), activated when one of the zone inputs or Fire Alarm
output is connected to earth
- 1 x Siren Output fail LED (yellow), activated in case line fault is detected in Fire Alarm
output
- A Stop Horn button for silencing the internal buzzer and external sirens
The Fire Alarm Panel is equipped with the following connection terminals:
- 4 monitored zones and in each zone a maximum of 32 detectors and/or manual call
points. An end of line resistor of 3300 ohm has to be mounted. Maximum current per
zone: 100mA (protected by fuse)
- External monitored 24VDC output for Sirens. An end of line resistor of 3300 ohm has to
be mounted. In case of fire alarm/manual call point or faults (if siren for fault is enabled in
configuration) this output is activated until Stop Horn pressed. The command of the siren
output can be delayed with 0…120s (configurable from setup) in case of fire alarms or
faults. Manual call points will always trigger the siren output at once. Fire detectors from
machinery space, if they are placed in one zone and that zone is configured as “machinery
area”, will also trigger the siren output without delay. For zones which are installed in
“general area” space and if a detector is already in alarm, a second detector in alarm (or
a third detector in alarm) will also trigger the siren output without delay if the zone current
is bigger than 100mA. In case siren output is not activated, the 24VDC polarity will be
reversed so that end of line resistor is monitored. External Sirens and Bells have to include
a diode, blocking the reversed 24V voltage. Maximum current: 500mA (protected by fuse)
- External fire alarm relay output which is activated when after a Fire Alarm, the Fire Alarm
Panel has not been reset (Stop Horn or Panel Reset) within 2 minutes. Activation means:
De-energize the relay so also in case no power available this output will give alarm
condition.
- External fail relay output which is activated when internal fault or external fault (line faults)
will be detected. Activation means: De-energize the relay so also in case no power
available this output will give alarm condition
- NMEA output. A NMEA-0183 serial output is available for connecting to the VDR
- Main power supply 19-31VDC / 1A maximum (4 x 100mA for zones and 500mA for Fire
Alarm output, 100mA for Fire Alarm Panel)
If Fire Alarm Panel is configured as Repeater panel, then only the Main power supply
and the Back-up power supply must be connected to Repeater panel terminals and
all the other terminals must be disconnected/not connected.
The Fire Alarm Panel is designed to work with the following detectors and manual call points:
Type/Manufacturer Tyco/600 Apollo / Orbis series(5) Consilium
Class A2S Heat detector 58degC. 601H-F(2) ORB-HT-41014-MAR (2) (4) 038000
Fixed temperature
Manual Call Point Resistance 470 ohm (1) 470 ohm (1) 266 ohm
(1)
In case the resistor will be replaced by a resistor of 266 ohm, the Fire Alarm Panel is able to
distinguish between fire alarms caused by detectors or by manual call points. The cause (manual
call point alarm) will then be displayed on the display of the Fire Alarm Panel.
(2)
Detector is equipped with a local led indicator.
(3)
Detector base must be equipped with an anti-tamper facility. The detector base must be wired
in such a way, that the fire detector loop is interrupted.
(4)
These detectors have type approval
(5)
If only Apollo Orbis series detectors are used in the system, then it is possible to use a Manual
Call Point with 470 ohm resistance and still the Fire Alarm Panel will be able to distinguish
between fire alarms caused by detectors or by manual call points. The cause (manual call point
alarm) will then be displayed on the display of the Fire Alarm Panel. In order to do that the Fire
Alarm Panel must be properly configured (see chapter Setup screen: Manual Call Point
resistance).
- Level 1, which is normal operation mode and this mode is entered as soon as one of the
power supplies becomes available.
o Stop Horn for Fault (in case defined in Level 3 that is allowed in Level 1).
o Stop Horn for Fire Alarm (in case defined in Level 3 that is allowed in Level 1).
o Panel Reset for Fault (in case defined in Level 3 that is allowed in Level 1).
o Dimming, with Arrow Left (more dimming) and Arrow Right (less dimming).
o Disable/enable zone
o In case of Fault: internal buzzer only or internal buzzer + Siren output activated.
Default: Internal buzzer and Siren output activated
o Stop Horn for Fault allowed in Level 2 or in Level 1+2 or Automatic. Default: Level

o Stop Horn for Fire Alarm allowed in Level 2 or in Level 1+2. Default: Level 2
A Fire Alarm is generated when one or more of the detectors and/or manual call points
connected to the zone inputs come into alarm condition. The Fire Alarm Panel can distinguish
between detector alarms and manual call point alarms, in case a 266 ohm resistor is
mounted in the manual call point or in case only Apollo Orbis series detectors are used and
the panel is configured to recognize 470 ohm manual call points (see chapter Setup screen:
Manual Call Point resistance).
o Fire Alarm lamp 1…4 (pushbutton) is flashing and internal buzzer (2Hz) and Siren
(continuous) are activated and Fire Alarm LED steady on
o Siren activation in case of Fire Alarm is according with the following rules:
▪ At once, if the siren output delay configured is 0s (see Setup screen: Siren
output delay)
▪ At once, if a manual call point is pressed in that zone
▪ At once, if a detector enters in alarm condition and the zone is
configured as “machinery area” space (see Setup screen: Zone location)
▪ Delayed with siren output delay value, if a detector enters in alarm
condition and the zone is configured as “general area” space (see Setup
screen: Zone location)
▪ Immediately after the zone current reaches 100mA, if we already have a
detector in alarm in a zone configured as “general area” space and a
second detector comes in alarm state in the same zone (depending on

detector’s alarm resistance the overall zone current can reach the
maximum allowed current of 100mA/per zone)
o When Stop Horn pressed (Level 2 or in Level 1+2), the Internal Buzzer and
external Sirens are silenced.
o When Panel Reset pressed (in Level 2 only), the 24V from zone is removed for
5 seconds and then comes back, resetting the connected detectors. Fire Alarm
lamp and Fire Alarm LED remain ON when the alarm is still there. Fire Alarm
lamp and Fire Alarm LED will extinguish when fire alarm condition has
disappeared. The Panel Reset procedure has to be repeated until the detector
or manual call point does not give alarm anymore. If after the Panel Reset
procedure the zone current is still above 100mA, a line fault will be generated
(short circuit condition in that zone is met).
o Internal buzzer and Siren can be activated again when in Level 2 by pressing
Stop Horn for more than 2 seconds.
If there is in one zone more than one detector in alarm or more than one manual
call pressed and the overall zone current exceeds 100mA, then after pressing the
Panel Reset button a Zone Line Fault will be generated as long as the zone current
stays above 100mA (as long as detectors are maintaining the alarm current).
During this period of time no new Fire Alarms can be detected in that zone. Only
after the zone returns to quiescent, new Fire Alarms can be detected in that zone.
Fault procedure:
o Corresponding Fault LED is activated and internal buzzer and Siren output
(when selected in Level 3) are activated and Fault output activated (= de-
energized) and General Fault LED steady on
o Siren activation in case of Fault is enabled via option Setup screen: Fault
handling options and is according with following rules:
▪ At once, if the siren output delay configured is 0s (see Setup screen: Siren
output delay)
▪ Delayed with siren output delay value (if value is different than 0s)
o When Stop Horn pressed (Level 2 or in Level 1+2), the Internal Buzzer and
external Sirens are silenced
o In case of automatic Panel Reset for Faults (set-up in Level 3): silence buzzer
and silence Siren Output and de-activate Fault output (=energize) and
extinguish corresponding Fault LED’s when Fault disappears
o In case of manual Panel Reset for Faults (by pressing the Panel Reset button),
two conditions can be distinguished:
▪ When fault is still active when Panel Reset pressed (in Level 2 or in Level
1+2), corresponding Fault LED will remain activated and Fail Output
remains active and General Fault LED remains steady until the fault
disappears. When the fault disappears: Fault LED’s will extinguish and
Fail Output will be de-activated (= energized)
▪ when fault is not active any more when Panel Reset pressed (in Level 2
or in level 1+2): Fault LED’s will extinguish and Fail Output will be de-
activated (= energized)
When both power supplies are failing, the following will happen:
o Fail output is activated (de-energized).
o In case one of the power supplies is restored, the Fire Alarm Panel enters the
normal operation mode and Fire Alarms and Faults are detected.
The activated lamps/buttons and the LCD display on the panel can be dimmed during the night,
except for the Fire Alarm lamps/LED which cannot be dimmed. The dimmed illumination level
can be adjusted in normal operation mode by pressing the Left Arrow button for more dimming
(= less brightness), or Right Arrow button for less dimming (= more brightness), in 8 steps. At
power-up the dimming is set to no dimming.
The panel has background illumination, which shines through the text sheet for night visibility of
the text. The background illumination level can be adjusted in setup mode (level 3), and upon
power up the background illumination is set to this level.
The brightness of the maximum dimming level (=minimum brightness) will be considerably
higher than the background illumination level in order to avoid confusion if a lamp is activated or
not. The background illumination level and the maximum dimming level can be adjusted in
setup mode.
A Lamp Test of the unit can be performed by pressing the PANEL RESET and STOP HORN buttons
at the same time during normal operation; as long as both buttons are kept pressed, all buttons
and all LEDs will be illuminated at maximum brightness and the firmware version and 1131 file
version are displayed on LCD:
CPL 1.31.1.0
Vm file 1.01
CPL 1.31.1.0
Vm file ver N.A.
CPL 1.31.1.0
No Vm file!
If PANEL RESET & STOP HORN are kept pressed for more than 5s, then the internal buzzer and
horn relay are also activated. When PANEL RESET & STOP HORN buttons are released, the
previous state is restored (for LCD, LEDs, backlight levels, buzzer & horn relay).
The panel has 2x16 character display, with a character height of 3.5mm, and with dimming.
During normal operation, the display shows level and “quiescent”.
Immediately after power-up, the LCD will be illuminated at 100% brightness and will display the
following logo message:
This logo message will remain on the screen for at least 3 seconds, even if alarms are generated
during these 3 seconds. If no alarms are generated, the logo message will remain on the screen
for 10 seconds, after which the screen will be erased.
No Vm file!
Fw v1.31.1.0
If the 1131 file is present, but the version of 1131 file is not compatible with current firmware
version, the following message will be displayed:
Update Vm file
to v1.05 or high
Note: The minimum supported 1131 file version will be displayed on second line.
During normal operation and when no alarms and faults are present, the display will indicate:
Level 1
QUIESCENT
The USB Host has one USB port which can be used for attaching USB drives.
It can be used either for updating the firmware or for saving and loading panel configurations.
To save or load a configuration the USB drive can be inserted any time during normal operation.
Details about the saving and loading procedure are in chapter “Save and load configurations
to/from USB drive”.
In case the Fire Alarm Panel is connected to other panels to distribute the dimming level, the
following will be indicated on the LCD display in case of Ethernet failure:
The alarm text for this failure is “LINK A FAIL” or “LINK B FAIL” (“A” for the first Ethernet port, “B”
for the second Ethernet port). If both ports have communication failures, display shows “LINK A
& B FAIL”. This alarm disappears if it is acknowledged and Ethernet communication is restored.
Usually, Ethernet Link Failures are detected instantaneously (the moment they happen, without
any delay). No further action will be taken: only indication on the display.
If the Ethernet link is still good but one of the RX/TX Ethernet wires is broken then the following
message will be displayed: “ETH A CABLE FAIL” or “ETH B CABLE FAIL” (“A” for the first Ethernet
port, “B” for the second Ethernet port). If both ports have communication failures, display
shows “ETH A & B CABLE FAIL”. This alarm disappears if it is acknowledged and Ethernet
communication is restored.
In case the Fire Alarm Panel is configured to be a part of a Master-Slave system (one
Repeater panel connected to one Master panel) and if the connection with the other panel
(also referred as “remote” panel) is lost, the following message will be displayed on LCD:
“MASTER xx FAIL” respectively “SLAVE xx FAIL”, where the xx is the ID of remote panel. This
alarm disappears if it is acknowledged and the communication with “remote” panel is restored.
The Fire Alarm Panel has an RS485 interface for outputting NMEA FIR messages according
with IEC 61162-1 standard. Only the Standalone Fire Alarm Panel or the Fire Alarm Master
Panel have this interface enabled (see chapter Fire Alarm Repeater Panel).
$--FIR,a,hhmmss.ss,aa,cc,xxx,xxx,a,a,c--c*hh<CR><LF>
Where:
- a = message type:
- hhmmss.ss = time of alarm condition change in UTC format; because Fire Alarm Panel
doesn’t include a UTC time information, this field is left blank,
- cc = first division indicator, zone number in our case (e.g. Z2), skipped for S messages
- xxx = second division indicator, indicates the loop number where the detector is
located; the loop number is 1 for Fire Alarm Panel
- xxx = fire detector number for E messages/activation detection count for S messages,
skipped for other messages; in case of Fire Alarm Panel, the fire detector number is
always 1
The Fire Alarm Panel is a conventional fire alarm system, not an addressable fire alarm system.
For that reason, all NMEA out messages are referring to zone status, not to detector status.
Following an example for each message type will be detailed.
$FRFIR,S,,FD,,,002,,,Status summary*7E
$FRFIR,E,,FD,Z1,001,001,A,A,Detector in Zone 1*5B
$FRFIR,E,,FD,Z2,001,001,A,A,Detector in Zone 2*5B
$FRFIR,F,,FD,Z3,,,,,Line fault in Zone 3*06
$FRFIR,F,,FD,Z4,,,,,Line fault in Zone 4*06
If no zone is in fire alarm, only the zone in fault info is sent as status report, the
summary status sentence (S message) and zone in alarm info (E message) being
removed from status report.
$FRFIR,D,,FD,Z3,,,,,Zone 3 disabled*57
$FRFIR,D,,FD,Z2,,,,,Zone 2 disabled*57
The Fire Alarm Panel can be configured as a Standalone Panel or as a part of a Master-Slave
system (one Master panel and one Repeater panel). Up to four Standalone Fire Alarm Panels
or up to two Fire Alarm Master Panels and two Fire Alarm Repeater Panels can be configured
on the same Ethernet network.
The Repeater Panel shows on LCD and status LED’s the same active fire alarms/manual call
points/faults as they are (displayed) on the Master panel. The only exceptions are the faults
which are locally processed by Repeater panel:
- Main Supply fail
- Back-up supply fail
- Ethernet link failures
Only Main & Back-up supply terminals must be connected to Repeater Panel, all the others
remain un-connected. Also, the RS-485 interface is disabled on Repeater Panel. It’s no need for
an 1131 program to be loaded in a Repeater panel and even if it’s loaded it will not be started by
the panel SW.
All operations (operator functions) which are available on Level 1 & Level 2 of security on Master
panel can be also invoked from Repeater Panel. The security level can also be changed in the
same way (see chapter Entering Operator Mode Level 2) from the Master or from Repeater
panel if the proper password is provided.
Level 2 and Level 3 passwords are shared by Master & Repeater panels but can only be
modified from Master panel via setup menu.
The Repeater panel has a reduced setup menu which can be used to control the following
operations:
- Changing of panel’s backlight and dimming levels
- Enabling/disabling of Ethernet link failures
- Panel ID setup
- Master-Slave system configuration
- Sending/receiving dimming levels to/from Ethernet
Chapter Setup and Configuration Level 3 will describe in detail the setup menus available on
Master panel and on Repeater panel.
When the operator wants to execute functions which are only allowed in operator mode Level
2, first a password has to be entered as follows:
To enter operator mode Level 2, Left Arrow and Right Arrow must be pressed at the same time,
then this screen appears in which the operator is asked to enter the password (as a sequence of
4 keys).
ENTER PASSWORD
****
The second row will start blank and an asterisk will be added for each pressed key.
When the correct sequence is entered, the following text is displayed on the LCD display as long
as Level 2 mode is active: “Level 2”.
When an incorrect sequence is entered, the following text is displayed briefly: “Incorrect
password”. Then normal operation is resumed. To prevent an operator from guessing the
password too easily, the “Incorrect password” text is not displayed when the first incorrect key is
pressed; it is displayed only after the 4th key was pressed.
Exit from Level 2 is done by pressing Arrow Left and Arrow Right pushbutton at the same time;
you go then to Level 1 mode.
Exit from level 2 is done automatically when no pushbutton is pressed for 5 minutes.
In case of a Master-Slave system, switching from Level 1 to Level 2 and back to Level 1 it’s
always possible from Master panel and it’s also possible from Repeater panel as long as
communication with Master panel is working (see chapter “Remote” panel failure).
At delivery of the Fire Alarm Panel the default password for Level 2 is:
Normal operation is stopped when setup mode is entered, and is reinitialized when setup mode
is exited.
On a non-blank panel, the existing configuration can be altered. In each setup screen, the
initially-displayed setting will be the one from the existing configuration.
The Left Arrow or Right Arrow buttons can be used to change the displayed setting. Then Panel
Reset (Ack) can be pressed to store the changed setting, or Stop Horn can be pressed to leave
the default setting unaltered. After pressing Panel Reset (Ack), the text “Stored!” is display
briefly; then the next setup screen is displayed.
To exit the setup mode and return to normal operation, Left Arrow + Right Arrow can be
pressed at the same time, from any setup screen (except where explicitly mentioned otherwise).
When exiting the setup mode this way, the altered configuration is permanently stored in the
Flash memory.
If the panel is powered down while in setup mode, no change will be written in the Flash
memory.
In the following paragraphs, unless otherwise mentioned, the setup screens are described in the
order in which they appear when the operator navigates through them.
The procedure to enter configuration Level 3 mode is the same by entering a password:
To enter setup mode, Left Arrow and Right Arrow must be pressed at the same time, then this
screen appears in which the operator is asked to enter the password (as a sequence of 4 keys).
ENTER PASSWORD
****
The second row will start blank and an asterisk will be added for each pressed key.
If no key is pressed for 10 seconds, the panel will automatically exit this screen and resume
normal operation.
When the correct sequence is entered, the following text is displayed briefly: “Operation Mode
Level 2” or ‘Set-Up Mode Level 3”. Then the first setup screen is displayed (where password can
be changed).

Operator Guide – Fire Alarm Panel
When an incorrect sequence is entered, the following text is displayed briefly: “Incorrect
password”. Then normal operation is resumed. To prevent an operator from guessing the
password too easily, the “Incorrect password” text is not displayed when the first incorrect key is
pressed; it is displayed only after the 4th key was pressed.
Exit from Level 3 is done by pressing Arrow Left and Arrow Right pushbutton at the same time;
you go than to Level 1 mode.
Exit from Level 3 is done automatically when no pushbutton is pressed for 5 minutes.
At delivery of the Fire Alarm Panel the default password for supervisor level 3 is:
Arrow Left, Arrow Right, Arrow Left, Arrow Right
The password can be changed in Level 3
This menu is available only for Standalone Fire Alarm Panel or for Fire Alarm Master Panel (in
case of Master-Slave system).
In this setup screen, the operator can choose to change the password. The following screen is
displayed:
Change LEVEL 2
password? <N>
With the arrow buttons, the displayed value can be changed between Y and N.
If Panel Reset (Ack) is pressed while Y is displayed, a setup screen is displayed where a new
password can be introduced. If Panel Reset (Ack) is pressed while N is displayed, the next setup
screen is displayed (background illumination settings).
If Stop Horn is pressed, the setup screen for LEVEL 3 password is displayed.
This menu is available only for Standalone Fire Alarm Panel or for Fire Alarm Master Panel (in
case of Master-Slave system).
In this setup screen the password can be changed. The following is displayed:
Enter LEVEL 2
password:
The password length is 4 keys, so the panel will wait for the operator to press any 4 keys. An
asterisk will be added to the second line with each key press.
After the 4th key has been pressed, the new password is stored and the text “Password
changed” is displayed briefly, then the setup screen for LEVEL 3 password is displayed. After that
the background illumination settings menu starts.
3.5) Setup screen: Background illumination level and Maximum dimming level
In this setup screen the background illumination level and the maximum dimming level for
buttons can be adjusted both at the same time.
Fire Alarm lamps and LED will illuminate full if a fire alarm occurs.
To give a better idea of how the illumination looks like, half of the buttons are illuminated at
background level (simulating “off” buttons), and the other half are illuminated at dimming level
(simulating “on” buttons). The operator can adjust both levels with the arrow buttons, and this
will immediately be reflected in the illumination of the buttons. Stop Horn can be used to toggle
what should be adjusted: background or dimming. When both levels are set at the desired
levels, Panel Reset (Acknowledge) can be pressed for going to the next setup screen.
Upon entering this setup screen, the illumination of the buttons on the left half of the front
panel is set at the currently-configured background illumination level, and the illumination of the
buttons on the right half of the front panel is set at the currently-configured maximum dimming
level. If the panel is blank, the background is set to 10% and the dimming is set to 30% (=70%
brightness).
Adjust bkgnd
(StopHorn-dim)
When the arrow keys are pressed, the background illumination level is adjusted between 0%
and 20%, in increments of 5%; the illumination of the “off” buttons (1, 3, 5 etc) is also adjusted
accordingly.
If Panel Reset (Ack) is pressed the currently-selected settings are stored, the illumination for all
buttons is set to the background level, and the next setup screen is displayed.
Adjust dimming
(StopHorn–bkgnd)
When the arrow keys are pressed, the dimming level is adjusted between 0% dimming (=100%
brightness) and 80% dimming (=20% brightness), in increments of 5%; the illumination of the
“on” buttons (2, 4, 6 etc) is also adjusted accordingly.
Although the background brightness can be set as high as 20% and the dimmed brightness can
be set as low as 20%, the panel will always keep a 20% “distance” between the two brightness
levels. If, for instance, the operator sets the background brightness to 15%, the panel will force
the dimmed brightness to at least 35%. If the operator sets the dimmed brightness to 25%, the
panel will force the background brightness to at most 5%.
If Panel Reset (Ack) is pressed the currently-selected settings are stored, the illumination for all
buttons is set to the background level, and the next setup screen is displayed.
If Stop Horn is pressed, the text “Adjust backgnd” is displayed again, and the operator can
continue to adjust both settings.
Fire Alarm lamps and LED will illuminate full if a fire alarm occurs. The dimmed status of the fire
alarm lamps and LED will only be used after the user has pressed the ‘Stop Horn’ button while

Save VM File
to USB drive?
This screen is skipped if the panel does not have a valid 1131 program.
If Panel Reset (Ack) is pressed the 1131 program will be saved to the root directory of USB drive,
under the name VM_XX.XCP. The characters XX are replaced by the panel ID. Any existing file
with the same name will be overwritten.
The following will be displayed if the USB drive holds an 1131 program:
Load VM File XX
from USB drive?
This screen is skipped if the USB drive does not have a valid 1131 program (a 1131 program
stored in VM_XX.XCP file, where XX can be 41…44).
If Panel Reset (Ack) is pressed the 1131 program will be saved to the panel.
Save config
to USB drive?
This screen is skipped if the panel does not have a configuration. The screen in next paragraph is
also displayed if Stop Horn is pressed.
If Panel Reset (Ack) is pressed, the configuration will be saved to the USB drive, in the root
directory, under the name FALR_XX.CFG, where XX is panel ID. Any existing file with the same
name will be overwritten.
The panel will exit USB mode and will restart normal operation if the USB drive is unplugged.
In this step the panel will look for valid configuration files in the root directory of the USB drive.
A valid configuration file has a filename of the form FALR_XX.CFG (where XX is the panel ID). It
Load
<FALR_XX.CFG>?
XX is the panel ID of a configuration file which was found in the root directory.
If Right Arrow is pressed, the panel will look for the next valid configuration file and will display
its corresponding ID. If Left Arrow is pressed, the panel will look for the previous valid
configuration file and will display its ID.
If Panel Reset (Ack) is pressed the selected configuration file is loaded and immediately stored in
the Flash memory. Then the panel will restart normal operation.
If Stop Horn is pressed the file will not be loaded and the old configuration will remain in the
Flash memory. Then the panel will restart normal operation.
The panel will exit USB mode and will restart normal operation if the USB drive has been
removed.
For Master-Slave systems (see chapter Fire Alarm Repeater Panel) the Ethernet communication
is also used to synchronize the Master and Repeater panels.
Each panel has two Ethernet ports, and redundancy is ensured by connecting all panels in an
Ethernet ring. One of the panels normally “splits” the ring in order to prevent loops. When one
Ethernet cable is interrupted, or when one panel is malfunctioning or missing, the splitting is
automatically removed, so all the panels will continue to see each other.
The software must always be upgraded in the order given above, always to the most recent
versions received from Praxis, otherwise the panel might enter an irrecoverable state, after
which only the serial bootloader can be used for writing software.
1. The panel might not recognize a USB drive that has too many files/directories
in the root directory. Make sure you are using a USB drive with at most 10-20
files/directories in the root directory.
2. Older firmware versions don’t recognize certain types of USB sticks. If you
have problems with a USB stick, try another one.
The USB bootloader can be started by keeping the ACK button pressed during panel power-up.
After the bootloader starts, and before a USB drive is inserted, the version number of the
existing panel bootloader is displayed on the LCD. The upgrade process is described below.
For panels and already programmed with old software, the upgrade process is slightly different.
The bootloader upgrade process sometimes deletes the panel configuration (the
settings made in setup mode). If you intend to keep the panel configuration, save it to
a USB drive before upgrading the bootloader, then upgrade the bootloader, then
upgrade the firmware, and then load the configuration back from the USB drive.
6.1.1) Upgrading the panel USB bootloader for panels that are already programmed with panel
bootloader versions older than 1.21.0.0
Currently, the panel cannot be upgraded if it has an USB bootloader older than 1.21.0.0.
6.1.2) Upgrading the panel USB bootloader for panels that are already programmed with panel
bootloader versions 1.21.0.0 or higher
Put the Panel USB bootloader file on a USB drive (USB hard-disk or USB memory stick), in
the root directory. The bootloader file has this filename:
o UniversalUsbBootloader.bin
− Start the bootloader on the panel (by keeping PANEL RESET (ACK) pressed during
power-up).
− Insert the USB drive. Within a few seconds, you are prompted with Update panel
bootloader? Answer Yes by pressing PANEL RESET (ACK).
− The panel starts start looking for binary files in the root directory, and will display the
name of the first file it finds (on the first row), together with a few details about the
file (on the second row). The filename is truncated to 8.3 DOS filename format; this
is a limitation of the software. Here you can:
o Press LEFT / RIGHT to see different details on the second row. You can see
the following (not necessarily in this order):
▪ The binary type name. For the USB bootloader, this is “CPL-BL-USB”.
Don’t load a file whose binary type name is different.
▪ The panel type name. For the USB bootloader, this is “ALL-PANELS”.
▪ The release version of the bootloader file, with the form X.Y.Z.W. This
must be the latest version you received from Praxis.
o Press PANEL RESET (ACK) to load the bootloader from the USB drive and
write it into the panel.
o Press STOP HORN to go to the next binary file from the root directory.
− Once you found your bootloader file, press PANEL RESET (ACK) to load it on the
panel. The update process takes a few seconds, and then the panel restarts itself and
the new bootloader executes.
Put the firmware file on a USB drive (USB hard-disk or USB memory stick), in the root
directory. The firmware file has a name such as
Fire-AP-RevB-Firmware.bin.
− Start the USB bootloader on the panel (by keeping PANEL RESET (ACK) pressed
during power-up).
− Make sure the panel is already running the latest version of the USB bootloader. You
can check this by starting the bootloader without inserting the USB drive: the
bootloader version is displayed on the LCD. This must be the latest version received
from Praxis.
− Insert the USB drive. Within a few seconds, you are prompted with Update panel
bootloader? Answer No by pressing STOP HORN.
− You are prompted with Update panel firmware? Answer Yes by pressing PANEL
RESET (ACK).
− The panel starts looking for binary files in the root directory, and will display the
name of the first file it finds (on the first row), together with a few details about the
file (on the second row). Note that the filename is truncated to 8.3 DOS filename
format; this is a limitation of the software. Here you can:
o Press LEFT / RIGHT to see different details on the second row. You can see
the following (not necessarily in this order):
▪ The binary type name. For the firmware, this is “CPL-FW”. Don’t load
a file whose binary type name is different.
▪ The panel type name. For the Fire-Alarm Panel, this is “FIRE-AP”.
Don’t load a file whose panel type name is different.
▪ The hardware revisions recognized by the firmware file.
▪ The release version of the firmware file, with the form X.Y.Z.W. This
must be the latest version you received from Praxis.
o Press PANEL RESET (ACK) to load the firmware from the USB drive and write
it into the panel.
o Press STOP HORN to go to the next binary file from the root directory.
− Once you found your firmware file, press PANEL RESET (ACK) to load it on the panel.
The update process takes a few seconds, the panel will inform you when the update
process has finished.
− Remove your USB drive and reboot the panel.
