The maximum time permitted for coating application is 4 hours, once the degree of cleanliness is
reached in order to avoid rust.

5.1.2 Surface Cleaning Degree

Surfaces to be painted must meet the minimum recommended grade of cleaning according to
manufacturer specification; this information must be included in the record issued by Manufacturing.

The different degrees of cleanliness are:

Type SSPC NACE ISO 8501-1

Solvent SSPC-SP1 -
Hand tool SSPC-SP2 - St2 o St3
Pneumatic tool SSPC-SP3 - St2 o St3
White Metal Blasting SSPC-SP5 1 Sa3
Near-White Metal Blasting SSPC-SP10 2 Sa 2 1/2”
Commercial Blast SSPC-SP6 3 Sa 2
Brush-off Blast SSPC-SP7 4 Sa 1

Blasting will be done using metallic shot and grit for all grades of abrasive cleaning.

5.1.3 Abrasive

The abrasive method used for cleaning must be steel grit and shot, a combination of spherical shot S-
280 angular grit G-40 with a minimum hardness of 50 HRC to obtain an average anchor profile of 2.5
mils.

The line must be verified in order to be free from moisture and other contaminants so that the
abrasive materials are dry, clean and free of contaminants.

5.1.4 Conditions

Relative humidity must not exceed 80% in order to proceed with blasting, the application must be
performed when the temperature of the surface to be blasted is 3°C (5°F) above the dew point.

Immediately after blasting all grit, shot and dust must be removed from the area to be coated using
dry pressurized air. Check that the piece is free from grit, tape or plugs before moving to the coating
process.

If the piece presents stains or pollutes the surface between cleaning and painting, it should be
cleaned again prior to painting.

5.2 COATING

5.2.1 Overview

The type of coating to be applied is defined by Engineering Department in their painting sheet
release, which should contain the specific product name, the required number of layers and each
layer dry film thickness. This information is used to fill MFG-03-F or MFG-04-F register where
Manufacturing Department validates information and then releases this record to production
department.

The MFG-03-F or MFG-04-F form must indicate type of cleaning, coating, dry film thickness, coated
areas, components to be painted and colors to be used.

5.2.2 Coating Information

Before starting the painting process, information contained in MFG-03-F or MFG-04-F format shall be
reviewed in addition to the technical documentation of the product to use.

Also, all materials must be handled in their original containers, tightly sealed and not damaged or
dented, clearly identified and within its expiration period, which can be checked outside the product
containers.

Dilution, mixing and application shall be in accordance with the instructions of the painting’s
manufacturer, shown on the technical specifications of the product.

To obtain a uniform mixture and avoid adhesion problems, thickness irregularity and clogging spray,
the mix should be performed with a pneumatic tool and an agitator, depending of the quantity of the
mixture.

In order to assure that the mixture reaches the air-gun without any trouble, it shall be filtered through
a sieve so it is free contaminants and foreign materials.

5.2.3 Coating Application

Coating shall not be applied when the surface temperature is below 4°C (39°F) or exceeding 43°C
(109°F). In the case of high temperature coatings, temperature limits for application are between 10 °
C (50°F) minimum and 38°C (100°F) maximum. This is contained in the painting’s data sheet.

Coatings shall not be applied if the relative humidity is above 85 % and it is required that substrate
temperature is, at least, 3°C (5°F) above the dew point.

Machined areas shall be well covered and threaded holes must have plugs in order to ensure an
optimum coverage.

It shall be checked that the piece is free from dust and contaminants; if it has some dirt, solvent or
reducer / thinner of coating could be used to clean part to be coated.

No painting coats shall be applied until the cleaning of the previous step is completely dry. This
information shall be verified in technical data sheets of the products to be used.

5.2.4 Application Methods

As it provides a better film uniformity per coat, spraying shall be the most common method used for
coating application. Depending of coating application, conventional or airless spraying shall be used.

Airless equipment is used for two-component coatings of epoxy and polyurethane type with a mixing
ratio of 1:1 and 4:1. Do not use for Inorganic Zinc or single-coating layer system.

Brushes and rollers can be used only under the following conditions:

(1) Brush:

- When areas cannot be covered adequately with spray gun.

- For touch-up or repairs where the film was not correctly applied.

- When the primer used for corners, edges, holes, welds or other irregular surfaces cannot be easily
applied with the spray gun.

(2) Roller:

- In medium and large flat surfaces after the primary coat has been applied. Not recommended for
use on Inorganic Zinc.

5.2.5 Curing Time

The curing time for each coating is in the supplier technical data sheets. Curing process shall occur in
open air and with a minimum one hour lapse of time, in order for the catalyst reaction to happen and
prevent coating defects. In some cases, curing process can be accelerated by the use of a drying
cabin, always in compliance with the supplier data sheet’s time and temperature.

5.2.6 Repairs and Touch-up

If the painted components result harmed or affected when handling them, the area shall be cleaned
and blasted again in order to apply the same number of layers as it had originally. Brush can be used
for repairs and touch-ups.

If the coating is inorganic zinc, this must be repaired by applying a zinc rich organic painting or
otherwise, the entire piece shall be cleaned (blasted) again.

5.3 Inspection

To verify that the degree of cleanliness is right, the visual pattern SSPC- VIS1 shall be used to
compare the cleanliness of the surface and be sure it is as requested.

Before the coating appliance, it is important to assure the environmental conditions. The parameters
to be evaluated are relative humidity, ambient temperature, dew point and temperature of the
substrate. This will be done with the help of the Psych meter.

During coating application the wet film thickness shall be checked in order to verify that the drying film
thickness is within range, it will be measured with a wet film gauge gage.

When application is done, an inspection for defects will be performed in order to be able to correct
them immediately.

The application of coatings shall be registered in the MFG-03-F or MFG-04-F with the parameters
mentioned before, also date and hour shall be reported to verify the curing time.

Once dry, the dry film thickness of each coating should be measured and registered. Several
readings, depending on the size of the piece, shall be taken being 8 the minimum number of
readings. The average of the readings is the information that appears on the record. All inspections
must be recorded in the Painting Record Sheet No. MFG-03-F or MFG-04-F.
