Introduction

Background of the study

Military training programs are designed to instill discipline, develop essential

skills, and foster personal growth in individuals pursuing a military career. While the

primary focus of military training is often on preparing individuals for service in the

armed forces, there is growing interest in understanding the broader impacts of

military training on various aspects of individuals' lives, including their academic

performance. In the context of Grade 12 HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences)

students, who are on the cusp of transitioning into higher education or professional

careers, exploring the impact of military training on their academic performance is

particularly relevant. By examining the impact of military training on the academic

performance of Grade 12 HUMSS students, we can gain insights into how their

participation in military training programs influences their academic journey,

potential career paths, and overall educational outcomes. This research could explore

how military training contributes to personal growth, including the development of

discipline, self-confidence, resilience, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility

among Grade 12 HUMSS students. Exploring how military training influences Grade

12 HUMSS students' career aspirations, vocational interests, and overall readiness for

future employment or higher education can provide insights into the potential benefits

of military training on their career trajectories.

All of military training programs are designed on leadership principles. Their

main role is to prepare young adults for military service, but also train them how to be

leaders. This is like an extended military camp that takes place in the field, as well as

in the classroom. These students still receive standard education, just like everyone
else at their school. Military education and training are challenging. They are part of

an additional rigorous programme that prepares them to become military leaders. this

gives them an advantage. they are already making their steps towards a future career.

There is a need for more research that examines the long-term effects of military

discipline on individuals, particularly after they have left the military training. This

would help to understand how military training influences individuals' behavior,

values, and decision-making. Concerning the impact of military discipline and

training on individuals in non-combat roles, Understanding how military training

influences individuals in diverse roles would provide a more holistic understanding of

its impact. There is a need to examines a broader range of academic performance

indicators, including critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, creativity, and

information retention. Understanding how military exercise influences these cognitive

domains would provide a more comprehensive understanding of its impact on student

performance.

Theoretical Framework

The study of subjective experience, can be apply in military immersion by

focusing on the perceptions and experiences of work immersion students during

training and deployment. By understanding the lived experiences of soldiers, trainers

and leaders can better tailor their approaches to meet the needs of individual soldiers

and achieve optimal performance. Military training can impact the trainees'

motivation and sense of autonomy. Trainees may feel like their choices and actions

are being dictated by the military hierarchy, which can lead to feelings of

powerlessness and reduced motivation. However, if the training is structured to allow

for a sense of choice and autonomy, trainees may feel more empowered and

motivated to complete their tasks. This can lead to increased moral, cohesion, and

overall success in mission accomplishment. Military immersion can be seen as an

opportunity to explore and understand the inner workings of soldiers' experiences,

leading to a more effective and empathetic approach to training.

Military training is a process of observational learning, where trainees learn

from the behavior of their peers and superiors. Trainees may model their behavior

after those they admire, and may adopt new attitudes and behaviors through this

process of observation and imitation. This theory suggests that military training

creates cognitive dissonance in trainees by exposing them to situations that challenge

their existing beliefs and values. This dissonance can lead to psychological distress,

but it can also result in changes in attitude and behavior as the trainees reconcile their

beliefs with their actions. Trainees are taught to adhere to strict codes of conduct, such

as following orders, showing respect for authority, and sacrificing individual needs

for the greater good of the group. This theory suggests that military training can have

a profound impact on the trainees' identity and sense of self, as they become fully

immersed in the military culture.

However, this study aim to investigate the impact of Military training towards

the academic performance of selected Grade 12 HUMSS students. Through

interviews, participants report an improvement in their work immersion.

Phenomenological analysis reveal that military discipline and training instilled a sense

of responsibility, accountability, and commitment which positively influenced

academic performance. Findings suggest that incorporating military principles in

academic settings may enhance students' academic performance and develop

necessary life skills.

Academic and military training at the work immersion activities at Senior

High School can provide a unique opportunity to build trainees as military leaders

with critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and proactive skills. These skills

are not only essential for military leadership but also critical for successful

entrepreneurship and business leadership. Therefore, their must focus on nurturing

these skills among trainees to produce competent leaders.

The National Military University in Bulgaria has achieved its main goal of

providing quality education through its officially adopted training documentation,

which includes detailed, agreed-upon qualification characteristics, curricula, and

programs for bachelor's degree programs. This ensures that students receive a

comprehensive and structured education that meets the standards set by the university

and is relevant to the needs of the users. By fulfilling this objective, the National

Military University is able to produce well-trained graduates who are prepared for

careers in the military and other fields. The educational landscape is constantly

evolving, characterized by varied and complex changes that are highly dynamic and

non-linear.
Grigorov (2020) emphasizes the need to understand the causes and motives

that lead individuals to enrol in the armed forces. Grigoro's study can help address the

issue of dwindling numbers of qualified personnel in the military. While management

is guiding and coordinating, identifying the factors that motivate potential candidates

to join the military can provide insights to improve recruitment strategies and

incentives. The scientific community defines a leader as someone who is recognized

by their followers and has the ability to manage and motivate them. A leader provides

direction and a vision for the group to follow. This terminology reflects the

importance of followership and the ability to effectively guide and inspire others

towards a common goal. (Semerdzhiev, 2013)

On Article of Drucker (2015)and Dzonev (2013) their define leadership

differently, with Drucker emphasizing the individual and Dzonev focusing on group

dynamics. Drucker sees leadership as elevating imagination and forming individuals

beyond their usual boundaries, while Dzonev views it as a phenomenon within group

dynamics. Both perspectives highlight the importance of leadership in achieving high

standards of fulfillment. And in work immersion it's definitely useable when it comes

to lead a group at discipline a co-immersion students that will give them a good

quality health body and gain more knowledge to follow and lead.

The status of authority is deemed mandatory in leadership and relies heavily

on personal characteristics and contributions. A leader can only be influential when

accepted and given consent by those he influences. The importance of this concept

lies in its ability to instill loyalty and drive towards common goals, leading to

increased productivity and success. The question of increasing the percentage of

authoritative leaders remains relevant as it is essential to sustaining effective

leadership in all industries.

According to Ştefănescu's (2019) literature, leaders possess self-confidence

and the ability to evoke strong emotional responses from their followers. They have

the potential to transform individuals, organizations, and even society itself.

Furthermore, their effect can be so powerful that they can bring about change beyond

their immediate environment. As such, their influence can be far-reaching and

profound, making them critical players in shaping the world we live in.

LOCAL

The proposal by President Bongbong Marcos for mandatory military training

for senior high school students in the Philippines has gained support from the

Philippine National Police (PNP). Police Maj. Gen. Valeriano De Leon, PNP director

for Operations, expressed the organization's support for the initiative, which aims to

instill discipline and patriotism among the youth while improving the country's

national security. The mandatory reserve training program would require students to

undergo military drills and physical fitness exercises as part of their curriculum.

However, some critics have raised concerns about the militarization of education and

its potential impact on the students' mental health and academic performance.

The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) became optional in 2001 as a

result of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) Act, which gave college
students the choice between ROTC, Literacy Training Program, and Civil Welfare

Training Service as part of their required NSTP. This move aimed to promote a wider

range of options for students to serve their country beyond military service. The

literature has examined various perspectives on the effectiveness and impact of this

change, including the influence on the Philippine military, the student experience, and

the role of NSTP in promoting national development.

The need to train Filipino youth for disaster preparedness, good citizenship,

national defense, and a strong sense of nationalism has been emphasized by the

government. This priority was previously set during the Marcos era and is being

revived under the current administration. Millions of young Filipinos are targeted for

this program which aims to instill a deep sense of pride in their country and prepare

them for any possible future crises. The success of this initiative could help ensure a

more resilient and empowered generation of Filipinos.

Military training has been found to have a significant impact on enhancing

mental health (Front Psychiatry, 2021), particularly in terms of psychological

resilience and depression. However, its effects on college freshmen in this regard

remain uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to assess changes in psychological

resilience among college freshmen undergoing military training. This review

highlights the importance of understanding the impact of military training on mental

health among young adults, particularly in the context of college education where the

need for psychological support is high.
