EXCAVATION,SAND FILLING AND BACKFILLING

Safety Engineer:

Shall facilitate in maintaining a good safe working practices at site. Shall facilitate in risk
analysis and required preventive measures.

5.0 Tools and Equipment:

For Excavation:-
 Excavator
 Mini excavator
 Tipping trucks
 Survey Instrument
 Safety Items: Materials for barricading, safety ribbons etc.
 Hand tools: Measuring tape, line-dori, etc.

For Backfilling:-

 Mini excavator
 Tipping trucks
 Plate compactor or Baby Roller
 Safety Items: Materials for barricading, safety ribbons etc.
 Hand tools: Crow bar, Shovel, trowel, etc…

6.0 Excavation Procedure

 Survey marking
 Safety-barricading
 Planning for disposal
 Excavation sequence
 Leveling and compaction of bottom soil

6.1 Survey marking

Marking will be as a reference or guidance point for excavation.

Excavating Boundary line shall be marked with the help of calibrated survey instruments with
respect to Approved drawings.
Equipment’s for Survey marking – Calibrated survey instruments (Auto – level, Total station,
Dumpy level, levelling staff, Prism), Pegs, Marking Paint and etc.
Hand tools - line dori, measuring tape, Shovel, trowel.

WORK METHOD STATEMENT FOR
EXCAVATION,SAND FILLING AND BACKFILLING

Safety cones and safety tapes are used as a safety barrication. Ladders are installed to
excavated footing for the access for employees and labours.

6.3 Planning for disposal

Excavated surplus soil and debris obtained shall dispose to designated area which will be
decided by GMR_GGIAL.

6.4 Excavation sequence

Survey indicating Points shall be set out before starting excavation. And using of suitable
calibrated survey instruments shall be ensured.

Excavation will be carried out within the points established.

Excavation shall be done not beyond the boundary marking of survey with the reference of GFC
drawings.

Buried cables, pipelines and other underground services are found and made diverted.

No excess cutting will be allowed and loose soil will be removed to prevent the sliding.

Permission shall be taken by coordinating with Landscape department to replant the removed
plants and trees.

Suitable drainage or dewatering arrangements are made to ensure, to drain – off the surface
water.

The excavation will be done adopting safe slope as per contract.

If any reusable excavated earth shall be stacked at the designated area shown by GMR_GGIAL
engineer.

6.5 levelling and Compaction of bottom soil

Once the excavation is completed till required level of foundation, the bed soil shall be levelled
and compacted using earth compactor.

WORK METHOD STATEMENT FOR
EXCAVATION,SAND FILLING AND BACKFILLING

 Safety-barricading
 Leveling & compaction for the m-sand laid below Hume pipes & HDPE pipes.
 Leveling and compaction of soil filled above Hume pipes & HDPE pipes.

7.1 Safety-barricading

Safety cones and safety tapes are used as a safety barrication. Ladders are installed to
excavated footing for the access for employees and labours.

7.2 Backfillingsequence

Estimate the required material for backfilling.

Approved material such as M-SAND shall be used as sand bedding for bottom of pipes.

Cleaning of excavated material, levelling of bed prior to backfill shall be strictly maintained.

Layer wise compaction shall be carried and ensured for any backfilling i.e. at an average depth
of 300mm.

Care shall be taken during operation that should lead to any damages to cables, pipelines and
any other resources.

Suitable access shall be provided for the movement of vehicles

The final layer will be paved to required level with respect to GFC drawing.

7.3 levelling and Compaction

The material filled shall be compacted suitable means like Baby roller/Plate compactor

8.0 Safety in construction

Clean and safe working conditions are maintained at site.

Utmost care will be taken to prevent accidents. Such as,
 Adopting Hard barrication
 Falling in trenches and pits
 Soil sliding and collapse
 Avoiding men around equipments
 Adequate dewatering
 Safety cones and barrication tapes used

Appropriate barrication and lightings are maintained at site at the excavation area.

WORK METHOD STATEMENT FOR
EXCAVATION,SAND FILLING AND BACKFILLING

Ramp shall be given to the excavated pits for the proper access for workers
Cutting shall be done from top to bottom

Excavation material shall not be kept at the edge of excavation and loaded to dumper.
There shall not be any vehicle movement close to the edge of excavation trench.
Parking or Halting shall be avoided at side slopes. Excavated materials shall be stacked at
minimum 1m distance from the slope to avoid collapse and sliding. Fixing net or placing sand
bags shall be done at slope areas
Arrangements shall be made for de-watering in case there is interface with ground water
All the manpower and staff engaged at work shall use necessary PPE as applicable to the work
All the vehicles and equipment engagement at work shall be duly certified by safety engineer
prior to development at work.

Arrangements for adequate illumination shall be made for work during night shift

9.0 Quality control in construction

 Check-list of work shall be duly filled-up and maintained during the excavation.
 Tests and Inspections shall be carried out in accordance to Inspection Testing Plan.
 Heavy compaction test shall be carried out to determine OMC and MDD for the material.
After compaction the field density and moisture content are determined by Sand
replacement method in order to ensure that the dry density is not less than 95% of lab
density.
