Your loving and unwavering support means everything to me. Special kudos goes to Ms. Meng Yu-gin, the editor of this book, whose intelligence and resourcefuiness make a real difference in the creation of this book. Most of all, | wish to dedicate this book to the students who made up my classes in the Global IELTS Institute ( Beijing). Their example has continually spurred me to keep working on this book. | hope it will be a nice reminder of our delightful time together. aR 2011 467 AF RRB RAE Preface Aua you wish to use English freely during the IELTS Speaking Test, but making this wish a reality remains a puzzle for most of you out there. In my observation, many Chinese candidates perform poorly on the test because they " over-prepare” for the test. The error-free templates and picture-perfect “model answers" that have been force-fed into test-takers’ brains have made the entire preparation process a strategic failure — few of us would try to learn the piano if we only attempted to sound like Mozart, right? To get a high score on the IELTS Speaking Section, students must understand what the examiners realistically want. Personal preferences may vary as far as words, structures and concepts go, but the reality is all examiners appreciate spontaneity. Throughout the test, the examiner can see and hear the candidate. It is fairly easy for him / her to spot the thoughtless spouting of prepared answers because there are no natural pauses between the sense groups in the answers. There also tends to be a dramatically hesitant response when the examiner asks for further elaboration on those answers. In most cases, this hesitancy substantially erodes the candidate's credibility in proving his/her English proficiency and he/she is penalized for this. Thus, unlike the majority of prep books on IELTS speaking, this volume is not designed to be memorized by rote but rather, to be studied as an approach to a testing method which values @ spontaneous performance when students communicate with the examiner. To this end, | have built most chapters around themes that are not only IELTS-oriented, but current and thought-provoking as well. The perspective offered on each theme challenges you to think beyond the common treatment of these themes, and all themes have a One Step Beyond component, which serves as a springboard for addressing related topics at a more sophisticated level. As this book is a cumulative study, | recommend beginning with Chapter 1 and continuing consecutively. It is true that speaking a second language is partly a talent, but it is mostly a skill, and just like any other skill, it improves faster with continuous practice. Studying and using the English you will learn in this volume over an extended period of time will be an intelligent and effective way to become a competent IELTS Speaking candidate.
