PROPOSED TIMBER HANDRAIL FOR TIMBER RAILING

LOADING - on Handrail
(a) Horizontal Load UDL, kN/m
Horizontal Load = 0.74 kN/m , Table 4, Fourth Schedule
Width of Barrier = 1m
Moment = 0.74 x 1 ^2 / 8x 1.6 = 0.148 kNm
Force = 0.74 x 1 x 1.6 = 1.184 kN
Force per support = 1.184 / 2 = 0.592 kN

(b) UDL applied to infill of, kN/m2

UDL = 1 kN/m2 , Table 4, Fourth Schedule
Height of Barrier = 1.1 m
Horizontal Load = 1 x 1.1 x 1.6 = 1.76 kN/m
Width of Barrier = 1m
Moment = 1.76 x 1 ^2 / 8 = 0.220 kNm
Force = 1.76 x 1 = 1.760 kN
Force per support = 1.76 / 2 = 0.880 kN

(c) Point Load applied to part of the infill of, kN

Point Load = 0.5 x 1.6 = 0.8 kN
Width of Barrier = 1m
Moment = 0.5 x 1 / 4x 1.6 = 0.200 kNm

Maximum Moment = 0.220 kNm Maximum of a, b & c

Maximum Force = 0.880 kN

Design of Handrail
Handrail size = 95 x 45 mm thk Timber handrail
Thickness = 45 mm
Gross Thickness = 45 mm
Moment = 0.220 kNm
Allowable fb(Timber) = 12.1 N/mm2 Py ( Stainless Steel )
Zxx, req'd = M/fb = 0.22 x 1000000 / 12.1 = 18182 mm3
Zxx, provided = 1/6 x 95 x 45 ^2 = 32063 mm3
Hence, the section provided is OK OK

Maximum Force = 0.880 kN

Section Area = 42.75 cm2 = 4275 mm2
Shear stress = 0.880 x 1 x 1000 = 0.206 N/mm2
1 x 4275 minima OK

Total Horizontal Load = 0.88 x 1 = 0.88 kN

Therefore use 95 x 45 mm thk Timber handrail
