2. Assessment Brief

According to Porter (2004), “every firm is a collection of activities that are performed to design,
produce, market, deliver and support its product”. This may seem obvious, but what are these
activities and how do they relate to each other? As an example, what is it that makes a service sector
organisation different to a manufacturing business? How are the activities different for companies in
different industries? What about charities and public sector organisations? This summative
assessment is aimed at addressing several functional areas of business organisations, including
economic, social and political context of international business. You are also required to discuss the
importance of information systems, operations and marketing functions as well as any other major
developments relevant to functional areas of a selected organisation.

You are required to select a UK based business organisation from the list below. It is important to
discuss the choice of your organisation with your tutor. You are required to complete this report and
all of the following tasks by using the selected organisation as a case study. Therefore, it is strongly
advised to carryout preliminary research about this organisation to ensure that you can access the
required information through reliable and authentic sources, e.g., corporate website, annual reports,
media sources, industry periodicals and journal.
