The film “Patriots Day” is an action drama based on the true events of the Boston Marathon
bombing on April 15, 2013. Directed by Peter Berg, the film follows the story of police
sergeant Tommy Saunders, who finds himself among the first to respond to the attack.
On April 14, 2013, one day before the attack, Sergeant Tommy Saunders captures a suspect
and fails to convince Commissioner Ed Davis to release him, he is punished by working in
the Boston Marathon . The next day, during the marathon, the brothers Dzhokhar and
Tamerlan Tsarnaev detonate two bombs of their own making, causing widespread panic.
This attack left three people dead and 280 injured.
FBI Special Agent in Charge DesLauriers was assigned to investigate the bombings in
collaboration with Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis , while Saunders searched for
evidence and helped people who had been injured or separated from loved ones. those who
were in the chaos, including Patrick, Jessica, Steven and Leo. FBI analysts review footage
of the attack and identified Dzhokhar and Tamerlan as suspects, but DesLauriers refuses to
release their footage to the public without further evidence. His hand is forced when
footage is leaked to the press, while Watertown Police Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese's men
begin door-to-door searches for the brothers.
MIT official Sean Collier in a failed attempt to steal his gun, and after stealing student
Dun's car, telling him that they carried out the bombing at the marathon and that they plan
to carry out another bombing in New York City . After Dzhokhar enters the Shell Gas
station at a convenience store , Dun escapes from the vehicle and takes refuge in the Mobil
gas station across the street, where he alerts the police to the whereabouts of the brothers.
After they drive off in the stolen car, Saunders arrives on the scene, learning of the brothers'
plan, and is given the GPS tracking number of the stolen car, leading the police to the
brothers and leading to an armed confrontation. Several officers are injured in the ensuing
shootout, where the brothers use firearms and bombs. As Tamerlan fires, Pugliese shoots
his ankle, wounding him. Tamerlan orders Dzhokhar to run to New York City to continue
the rampage while he makes one last stand. As Tamerlan is subdued by the police,
Dzhokhar runs over his brother on his flight, murders him, then escapes in the chaos.
Meanwhile, Tamerlan's wife and Dzhokhar's college friends from UMass Dartmouth are
detained by the FBI Hostage Rescue Team and interrogated by the High Value
Interrogation Group . The wife refuses to reveal any knowledge of her husband's illegal
activities, while Dzhokhar's roommates appear oblivious to his plans, despite previously
finding bomb components in their belongings.
Later, people are asked to stay home while the entire city goes under lockdown, in
Watertown, a local man finds Dzhokhar hiding under the covers on his boat and calls
Saunders and the superintendent. Dzhokhar is quickly surrounded and arrested after a brief
confrontation. After some time the Boston police are invited to attend a Boston Red Sox
game , where David Ortiz thanks them for their heroism and tells them to "stay strong".
Dzhokhar was sentenced to death by lethal injection , however this sentence was overturned
after a short time, but he remained in prison; his three college friends were arrested for
obstructing the bombing investigation.
The city of Boston was seen in a context where they are mired in fear and confusion, many
citizens wondering who could have carried out such an act of violence. Throughout the
film, archival footage, actual news footage, is shown to give an idea of the scale of the
attack and the response from authorities and the population of Boston. This includes
interviews with real people who were involved in the events, including survivors and the
police officers and firefighters who responded to the attack.
In my opinion this is a very well-structured narrative work and with exceptional
performances, the film offers an emotionally powerful representation of the events that took
place during that fateful day. This film is a respectful tribute to the unsung heroes who
risked their lives to help victims, from firefighters and paramedics to members of the police
and FBI, it is powerful to see the courage and dedication of those who worked tirelessly for
save lives and bring those responsible to justice. I love what movies based on real events
are and this left me very shocked, when I saw it I had an emotionally intense and reflective
cinematographic experience.
