Applying Cultural Pluralism in RN Profession and in Daily Life

Introduction

Cultural pluralism is recognizing, accepting, and celebrating the diversity of cultures

within a society. It is a way of respecting and honoring the distinct beliefs, values, and customs

that different groups of people hold. Cultural pluralism is the belief that different cultures can

enrich one another and that each culture has something to offer the rest of society. Learning and

understanding cultural pluralism is critical in the work environment and daily life.

How will you apply what you have learned in this class to your RN profession?

The lessons learned from this class are important for exploring the experience of different

cultural and ethnic groups in a given society. Therefore, as an RN, I will effectively explore

issues of cultural identity, diversity, prejudice, power, and privilege. This capability will be

essential in my career as the healthcare settings require that practitioners be aware of the

differences between the patients and serve them equally and adequately. For instance, as an RN,

I need to be aware of cultural differences when providing care to patients from different cultures,

ensuring their values and norms are adhered to while helping them integrate into better and

healthy ways of living.

Furthermore, an RN may need to be aware of the cultural implications of various

healthcare interventions. This venture is where the nurses attend to the sensitivity of different

lifestyles of different people, including their beliefs and taking on medication. As such, I will use

the information gained from the class to ensure that these beliefs are noticed and devise better

and more effective approaches to convince people to turn to healthier and less risky ways of

living without provoking their traditions and norms. For example, for those who believe in

traditional medicine, appropriate persuasion skills are necessary to turn them into medical

interventions when their situations surpass traditional healers’ capabilities. I will therefore use

the lessons learned from the course to help such patients have good lives by getting them the

right healthcare attention. An RN may require additional training in cultural pluralism to provide

culturally sensitive care.

Additionally, lessons learned from this class will be vital in developing healthy and

supportive relationships with workers in the nursing career. Understanding one another is the

first step to cohesion and appropriate integration into the work environment. Therefore, the

information will be necessary to promote a positive and healthy working environment in the

nursing environment. By gaining a general understanding of cultural pluralism, an RN can better

navigate the various cultural environments in which they work.

How will you apply what you have learned in this class in your daily life?

Based on daily life and interactions, the cultural pluralism course will help explore the

dynamics of cultural differences and diversity in society. One can now examine how different

cultures interact and how society can become more inclusive and accepting of cultural

differences. First, I will apply what I have learned in the class in my daily life by engaging with

others from different cultures. This goal can be achieved through participating in cultural events,

speaking out against intolerance, or simply trying to understand and appreciate other cultures.

One must be aware of their cultural biases and how they might affect their interactions with

others from different cultures. An example of an arena of cultural pluralism would be the way

that people from different cultures dress. Some people might view this as a fashion statement,

while others might see it as an invasion of privacy.

Another example would be the way that people from different cultures speak. Some

people might view this as a sign of intelligence, while others might see it as ignorance. By

applying the information learned from the cultural pluralism class, I can better understand these,

among other dynamics of cultural differences and diversity in society. This understanding

promotes tolerance and inclusion for all members of society. Here, I will use my understanding

to be on the positive side of diversity and inclusion while appealing through conviction to other

people’s acceptance and embracing of different cultures. I believe such conviction is an

important goal in society, as differences can result in chaos. Besides, it inhibits the proper

integration of different people into communities, hindering their dreams and self-actualization.

For this reason, I will apply the skills learned from this class to lead as an example,

helping others experience effective integration into societies without fear of victimization and

discrimination. I would follow the belief that learning and embracing other people’s cultures can

enrich one’s culture. As a result, I will learn and embrace other people’s cultures and be free to

help them learn about my culture. In doing this, harmony and cohesion are enhanced in a society.
