Definition of Terms

 Oblique Triangle- is a
triangle which does not
contain any right angle and
may be classified into two :
acute triangle and obtuse
triangle.
 Acute Triangle- is a
triangle whose angles are
all less than 90 .

 Obtuse Triangle- is a
triangle in which one of the
angles is more than 90 .

Note:
1. The Law of Sines can
also be written in the
reciprocal form.
a
sin A
= b
sin B
= c
sin C
2. The Law of Sines can
also take several forms.

a= b sin A
sin B
b= a sin B
sin A
c= a sin C

a= c sin A
sin C
b= c sin B
sin C
c= b sin C

3. When the two angles of
a triangle are given with
one side, we first find
the third angle and then
use the Law of Sines to
find the other two sides.
4. The Law of Sines can
be used in solving a
triangle when we
know any of the
following:
a. One side and two
angles (ASA or AAS)
or
b. Two sides and an
angle opposite of
these sides (SSA)

LAW OF
COSINES
 Oblique triangles can be solved
using the Law of Cosines. This law
states that: In any triangle the
square of the length of one side is
equal to the sum of the squares of
the other two sides minus twice the
product of these sides and the
cosine of the angle between them.
 Law of Cosines – If two sides and
an included angle or three sides are
given in a triangle, then the law of
sines is not particularly helpful in
solving the triangle, the Pythagorean
theorem for right triangles can be
generalized into another law, called
the law of cosines.
Cos A = 2 2

Cos B = a2 +c 2−b 2

Steps In Solving The
SAS Case
1.Find the side
opposite the given
angle.
2. Find the measure of the
second angle (the angle
opposite the shorter of the
two sides – this angle will
always be acute). Use law of
Sines or Cosines.
3. Find the measure of the third
angle.
Steps In Solving The
SSS Case
1. Find the angle opposite
the longest side. Use
the law of Cosines
2. Find either of the
remaining angles. Use
the law of Sines or
Cosines
3. Find the measure of the
third angle.
 Find the measure of angle C.
