Audio Script
Narrator: Unit 1, Listening Exercise 1.
Ellie, Janet and Matt are talking about their school’s Open Day. Listen to what they
say. The recording will be played two times.
When you hear a beep (beep), fill in the blank. You now have 20 seconds to study the
notes. (20-second music)
The recording will begin now.

[Ellie: It’s time to think about some events for Open Day. We will start the preparations as
soon as the events programme is ready.
Janet: First, we need to put Green Hill Primary School Open Day at the top of the events
programme. (beep)

Matt: When’s Open Day this year? The third of April?

Janet: No. It’s on Saturday, the eighteenth of March. (beep) (12-second pause)

Matt: Does it last for the whole day?

Janet: No, only half a day, from ten to three. (beep) (12-second pause)

Matt: Like previous years, we’ll hold most of the events in the school hall so that we don’t
have to worry about the weather. (beep) (12-second pause)

Matt: Let’s start the day with the opening ceremony, from ten to ten thirty. What about
inviting Tony Yip, the famous singer who went to our school, to sing the school song
with the choir and give the opening speech?
Janet: That sounds great. I’ll send out an invitation card to Mr Yip tomorrow. (beep)
(12-second pause)

Ellie: I think we can run the guided tour for an hour starting at ten thirty. Apart from the
usual tour around the school, we can also give a library tour to show the guests our
new library.
Matt: Good idea! I’ll organise a group of students to give the guided tour next Monday.
(beep) (12-second pause)

Ellie: I have another idea. How about having storytelling time from eleven to eleven thirty?
Small children can sit on the new cushions in the library and listen to some stories.
What do you think?

Janet: That’s a good idea.

Matt: Students at our school all have different talents. What about having a two-hour talent
show?
Janet: I think two hours is too long. How about making it an hour, from eleven thirty to
twelve thirty?
Matt: Sure. I’ll put up a sign-up sheet next Tuesday. (beep) (12-second pause)

Janet: The game stalls are always popular. Let’s set up more stalls this year and have game
time from twelve thirty to two thirty. Guests can collect stickers at each of the stalls.
They can then enter the lucky draw and win some souvenirs. (beep) (12-second
pause)

Janet: What kinds of souvenirs do you think we should have?

Matt: I think water bottles and umbrellas are useful souvenirs.
Janet: Yes, I agree. I’ll contact a company that makes them next Wednesday. (beep) (12-
second pause)

Matt: Let’s have the lucky draw at two thirty and the closing ceremony at two forty-five.
Ellie: OK. I think we have enough events for Open Day. I’ll draw the posters this weekend
and put them up next week.
Janet: Hooray! This year’s Open Day is going to be great!]

Narrator: Listen to the recording again.
