ME4001D Machine Design II
Assignment -1, Due Date: August 24, 2023

1. A plate clutch has 3 disks on the driving shaft and 2 discs on the driven shaft.
The outside diameter of contacting surfaces in 240 mm and the inner diameter is
120 mm. Assuming uniform pressure, find the total spring load pressing the plates
together to transmit 25 kW at 1575 rpm. If there are 6 springs each of stiffness 13
kN/m and each of the surface has worn away by 1.25 mm, find the maximum power
that can be transmitted assuming uniform wear.

2. A cone clutch with semi-cone angle of 15o transmits 10 kW at 600 rpm. The normal
pressure intensity between the surfaces in contact is not to exceed 100 kN/m2 . The
width of the friction surfaces is half of the mean diameter. Assume the coefficient
of friction µ = 0.25. Determine

(a) the outer and inner diameters of the plates,

(b) width of the cone face, and
(c) the axial force to engage the clutch.

3. A single plate clutch is used to transmit power rotating at a uniform speed of 250
rpm. The clutch has two effective contact surfaces with a friction coefficient of 0.3.
The outer and inner diameters of the plates are 200 mm and 120 mm, respectively.
Assuming uniform wear of the clutch and the maximum intensity of pressure not to
exceed 100 kN/m2 , find its maximum torque carrying capacity. If the moment of
inertia of the machine’s rotating parts is 6.5 kgm2 , determine the time to attain the
full speed by the machine and the energy lost in the slipping of the clutch.

4. A differential band brake is to be designed to support a load of 400 kN around a

barrel of 450 mm diameter. The brake is mounted on a 800 mm diameter drum.
The two ends of the band are attached to pins on opposite sides of the fulcrum of the
brake lever at 40 mm and 120 mm. The length of the lever is 900 mm. The angle of
wrap of the band around the drum is 240o , and the coefficient of friction is 0.3. Give
the design calculations for the lever and fulcrum pin. (Note: Lateral connections
of the bands on the lever are such that the bands are always perpendicular to the
lever.)

5. An automobile vehicle weighing 13.5 kN is moving on a level road at a speed of

95 kmph. When the brakes are applied, it is subjected to a uniform deceleration
of 6 m/s2 . There are brakes on all four wheels. The tyre diameter is 750 mm.
The kinetic energy of the rotating part is 10% of the kinetic energy of the moving
vehicle. The mass of each drum assembly is 10 kg and the specific heat capacity is
460J/kg o C. Calculate,

(a) the braking time,

(b) stopping distance,
(c) energy absorbed by each brake and
(d) temperature rise of the brake drum assembly.

6. The double block brake shown in Figure 1 has a friction lining with coefficient of
friction 0.3. The drum rotates at 1500 rpm. Determine the power lost as heat (All
dimensions are in mm).

7. An internal expanding double shoe brake is shown in the Figure 2. Find the torque
absorbing capacity of this brake and the force required to operate it. The face width
of the friction lining is 50 mm which is assumed to be started from the pivot itself.
Consider the maximum pressure to be 1 MPa and coefficient friction to be 0.35 (All
dimensions are in mm).
