Intra-term EXAMINATION

Spring SESSION 2022

School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment
Unit Name (In Full): Power & Machines
Unit Number: ELEC 3011
Time Allowed: 90 + 15 minutes (solve + upload).
Number of Questions: 4
Total Number of Pages: 3 (including this cover page)
Lecturer Name: Assoc. Professor M H Nagrial

INSTRUCTIONS:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING

1 Use A4 size sheets to solve this examination.

2 Write your name and student number on the top of EACH page of the answer sheets that you use.

3 This is an open book examination.

4 The value of each question is shown. The correlated total of all marks for questions in the paper is 100.

5 Please secure the answer sheets with you till the end of this semester.

6 Clearly indicate which question you are answering on the answer sheets used.

7 At the end of examination time, you are required to take photos of their answer sheets in order and create one
.pdf file combining all the photos. Name this .pdf file as (STUDENT FULL NAME_STUDENT ID) and upload on
the vUWS.

8 IT IS STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO double check the readability and the order of their taken photos and
the quality of the pdf file.

NOTE:
There have been variables introduced in this examination paper. Please read carefully. XY are the
last 2 digits of your student number. e.g.:

- If your student ID is 18323082, then X = 8, Y = 2 and XY = 82.

- 15.Y=15.2 and 1.8X=1.88.

Q1. [30 marks]
An unbalanced Y-connected source delivers power to a delta-connected load. The phase
voltages (on source side) are 4X0, 4Y0 and 420 V respectively for a phase sequence
ABC. The loads are as follows:

Z1 = (2 - j4) Ω, Z2 = j (8 + X) Ω and Z3 = (9 - 0.YX) Ω,

Determine the following:

(i) The line voltages (Vab, Vbc, Vca) (5)

(ii) The line and phase currents. (9)

(iii) The powers (apparent, active, reactive). (9)

(iv) The power factor. (3)

(v) Draw the phasor diagram. (4)

Q2. [25 marks]

The load on a (450 - X0) V, 50 Hz, Y-connected, balanced three-phase source
consists of three equal Y-connected impedances of (100-X0) - j 50 Ω and three equal
Δ-connected impedances of 200 + j (200 - X0) Ω.

a. Draw and label the equivalent circuit diagram. (5)

b. Compute the line current, total apparent, active, reactive powers and the power
factor for total load. (15)

c. Draw the phasor diagram showing voltages and currents. (5)

Q3. [15 marks]

Two coils are wound (with a (7X)% flux sharing) on a magnetic core having a mean
length of 100 cm and a core diameter of (2.5Y) cm. The relative permeability of the
magnetic material is (2Y00). If the mutual inductance between the coils is 25 mH and
one coil has 2X0 turns, determine the number of turns on the other coil.

linear B-H magnetisation characteristic and a relative permeability r of 3Y00.
