What This Module is About

Introductory Message
Welcome to the Science 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Changes in
the Environment.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
public schools to assist you, the teacher or facilitator, in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and
economic constraints in schooling.

To the facilitators:

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their
own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

To the parents:
As vital partners in education, your support to your children’s learning at home, is a
great factor to ensure that they will become successful in what they do. As parents,
you are expected to monitor your children’s progress while they are accomplishing the
tasks in this module while at the same time, ensuring that they learn independently.

The objectives set for this learning material will be certainly accomplished with your
steadfast guidance and support.

To the learners:

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

Furthermore, it is our objective that you will have fun while going through this material.
Take charge of your learning pace and in no time, you will successfully meet the
targets and objectives set in this module which are intended for your ultimate
development as a learner and as a person.
How to Learn from this Module
To achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.
• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and exercises diligently.
• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

References This is a list of all sources used in developing this

module.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the module.
Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities included
in the module.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
7. If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to
consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and gain deep
understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it.

Module 7
Abiotic Factors and Its Impact
Lesson 1 to Environment

What I Need To Know

COMPETENCY CODE
Predict the effects of changes in abiotic factors on the S7LT-IIj-12
ecosystem

In this particular lesson, you will learn the different abiotic factors and
its contribution in our environment.
Objectives: At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Identify the abiotic factors in the ecosystem
2. Predict the effect of changes in abiotic factors on the ecosystem.

What’s In

In any ecosystem, organisms need a balanced environment. A

balanced environment is one which all living and nonliving things are
interacting harmoniously.

What’s New
Identify what abiotic factors in the environment is affected based on the pictures
below.

What Is It

Abiotic factors of the environment exert on the distribution of life in the

biosphere. These factors determine the growth and survival of organisms. They
limit or control populations and stimulate organisms to adapt to their
environment.

1. Light or Solar Energy- Nearly all energy on earth comes from the sun.
 The sun gives off solar or light energy.
 Warms the earth, evaporates water that falls as rain, and
produces wind.

2|P a g e
 The more important role of light energy from the sun is the
production of food by plants, in the process called
photosynthesis.
 Though too much solar energy trapped on Earth will cause
greenhouse effect.
 Also, too much of it can lead to El Niῆo, an extreme drought.

2. Water- Life on earth is impossible without water.

 Water is the most essential substance needed for all life
processes.
 The earth’s surface is composed of 70% water. However, 97% of
this is salt water which is not suitable for drinking.
 Aside from light energy, plants also need water for the food-
making process.
 Animals need to drink water in order to survive.
 About 0.1% is freshwater, accessed through rivers, deep wells
and atmosphere.
 Presence of pollutants, dirts in water can cause water pollution.
 Excess of water is no good as well, for it can create catastrophes
such as soil erosion, landslides, floods, worst La Niῆa.

3. Air- Air is mixture of gases. Gases play an important role in the water cycle.
 Nitrogen is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere, wherein it
is an important component of many organic molecules such as
protein.
 Oxygen is the second most abundant gas in the atmosphere,
where it play a vital role in life processes.
 Plants and animals need oxygen for respiration.
 Respiration is the process of combining oxygen with food
molecules to produce energy for the organism to survive and
grow.
 Another important gas is carbon dioxide. It is another important
ingredient in photosynthesis.
 Too much air pollutants can cause air pollution.

4. Temperature- The activities of some organisms depend on changes in their

environment’s temperature.
 Each organism has a specific temperature requirement or
temperature range in order to survive.
 If temperature turns higher or lower than the required range, the
organisms will die.

3. Soil- Soil provides substrate (surface) for most organisms.

 It contains minerals, nutrients and organic materials which are
needed to support life.

Our world is undergoing environmental changes. Organisms need to

cope for them to survive and continue their kind.

3|P a g e
And if these abiotic factors gets affected rapid and violent conditions
will occur such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods and
pollution.

What’s More

Matching Type: Match the items in Column A with those in Colum B. Write the
answers only.

A B

1. air a. provides substrate for most organisms

2. light b. mixture of gases

3. soil c. warms the earth

4. temperature d. drunk by organisms to survive

5. water e. required range is necessary for organisms’ survival

What I Have Learned

1. A. What are the abiotic factors in the environment?

B. How are they important in the life processes?

2. What will happen to organisms if water and air becomes polluted?

What I Can Do

What do you think will happen to the ecosystem if there are changes in
the abiotic factors of the environment?

Additional Activities

Think of at least one daily practice that made you think has an impact in
taking care and maintaining the balance of our ecosystem.
