SCI 7 Q3
SOUND
MODULE 3
Waves as carriers of energy
LESSON

What I Need To Know

Learning Competency: 1. Infer that waves carry energy. (S7LT-IIIc-4)
Objectives: At the end of this module, you will be able to:

a. explain sound production in the human voice box, and how pitch,
loudness, and quality of sound vary from one person to another

What’s In
There are two kinds of waves according to propagation. These are the
longitudinal and transverse waves. Sound is an example of a longitudinal wave and
it is also classified as a mechanical wave. Thus there has to be medium for which
sound should travel and propagate. Anywhere we go and whatever we do, we hear
sound. Some of these are familiar to us, a friend’ s voice, the chirping of birds, the
ticking of the clock, the barking of dogs. Certain sounds like music are pleasant to
ears; others are not. Sound differs from one another that is why we can identify who
is the one talking. But how a person produce sound? Why sounds differ from one
another?

What’s New
ACTIVITY 1
From the jumbled letters, you form a word related to the concept of
sound.
1. ITCPH = __ __ __ __ __
2. LOSSNEDU = __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
3. VTNIOBARI = __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
4. YNNSITETI = __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __

What Is It
The source of sound is a vibrating object. It is produced by a series of
vibrations parallel to the direction of travel of the waves. When we talk or make any
sound, our vocal chords vibrate. When there are no vibrations felt, no sound is

1
produced. Vibrations of molecules can either be to-and-fro or back and forth
movement. When you pluck the strings of a guitar, the strings look hazy as they
vibrate and the guitar produces sound.
There are characteristics of sound that make them different from one another.
They differ in intensity, loudness, pitch, and quality.
Intensity refers to the amount of energy a sound carries. It is related to
amplitude. The bigger the amplitude the higher is the intensity of the sound wave.
Sound intensity is related to loudness. The bigger the intensity the louder is
the sound. Loudness cannot be measured because it depends on the ear and the
subjective judgment of the listener. However, we can measure intensity using the
unit bel or decibel.
Pitch is the lowness or highness of sound. The frequency of sound waves
determines its pitch. The higher the frequency of a sound wave, the higher the pitch.
The quality of sound (timbre) distinguishes sounds from one another. Two
sounds of the same pitch may not sound the same. Example, the piano and violin
sounds of the same pitch will not sound the same.

What’s More
ACTIVITY 2 . The Guitar
1. Strum each guitar string without holding the frets. (String#1 is the lowest
most string while string #6 is the uppermost string.)
2. Record all your observations in the table provided below.

Q1. Which string vibrates fastest when strummed?

Q2. Which string vibrates slowest when strummed?
Q3. Which string has the highest frequency?
Q4. Which string has the highest pitch?
Q5. Which string has the lowest frequency?
Q6. Which string has the lowest pitch?
Q7. How would you relate pitch and frequency?

2
What I Have Learned

The pitch refers to the highness or lowness of sound of a musical note. In

Activity 2, you are able to relate vibrations, frequency, and pitch using a guitar. The
pitch of a high frequency sound is also high while the pitch of a low frequency sound
is also low.

ACTIVITY 3
Match column A with column B by writing the letter on the space provided
before each number.
A B
____1. Produces sound when energy is transferred to it A. Loudness
____2. The lowness or highness of sound B. Intensity
____3. It refers to the amount of energy a sound carries C.Quality of sound
____4. A sound wave has higher pitch D. Frequency
E. A vibrating object
____5. It carries energy F. Wave
G. Bel
____6. A sound wave has lower pitch H. Higher frequency
I. Lower frequency
____7. A unit of sound intensity J. Pitch

____8. It cannot be measured because it depends on the listener

____9. It identifies one sound from another
____10. It is directly related to pitch
