SO WE ARE GOING TO TACKLE WHAT ARE Montero and Izquierdo insights ABOUT THE MUTINY
- Montero He documented the event and highlighted it is an attempt of the Indios to overthrow
the Spanish Government in the Philippines
- Meanwhile, Governor-General Rafael Izquierdo’s official report about the Mutiny, he magnified
the event and made use of it to implicate the native clergy, which was then active in the call of
secularization
- Izquierdo was appointed by the king of spain as the Governo general of the Philippines and he
introduced rigid and strict policies that made Filipinos more against the Spanish Government, It
was under his leadership that the 1872 Cavite Mutiny and the execution of
three priests—Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora—took place
- The two accounts complimented and corroborated with each other, yet it is more spiteful on the
side of the Governor General
- To Furthermore, both the report of Montero and Izquierdo scored out about the abolition of
privileges enjoyed by the workers of Cavite arsenals sush as non-payment of tributes and
exemption from forced labor were the main reason of the “revolution” as they called, but, the
other causes were enumerated
- One of the other causes that enumerated in the article was the Spanish Revolution which
overthrew the secular throne, dirty propagandas proliferated by unrestrained press, democratic,
liberal and republican books and pamphlets reaching the Philippines, then the speeches and
preaching of the apostles of these new ideas in spain: then the outburst of the American
Publicist and criminal policy of the senseless Governor whom the revolutionary government sent
to govern the Philippines, and who put into practice those ideas and they were determined in
the circumstances which gave rise to the Filipino’s in attaining their independence
- The most important cause was the presence of the native clergy whose out of animosity
(bitterness) against the Spanish Friars, they conspired and supported the rebels and enemies of
the Spain
- In other words, upon Izquierdo official report blamed the unruly Spanish Press for stockpiling the
malicious propagandas grasped by the Filipinos
- On Izquierdo’s report they also reported the King of Spain that the rebels wanted to overthrow
the Spanish Government and installing a new Hari (or we can say a new leader) in favor of the
two priest which are Fr. Jose Burgos and Fr. Jacinto Zamora. The general also added that the
native clergy enticed other participants by giving them charismatic assurance that their fight will
not fail because God is with them coupled with handsome promises of rewards such as
employment, wealth, and ranks in the army
- Izquierdo, in his report lambasted the Indios as gullible and possessed an innate propensity for
stealing
JOSE MONTERO Y VIDAL AND GOV.GEN. RAFAEL IZQUIERED
- The two Spaniards deemed that the event of 1872 was planned earlier and was thought of it as
a big conspiracy among educated leaders, mestizos, abogadillos or native lawyers, residents of
Manila and Cavite and the native clergy
- They also insinuated that the conspirators of Manila and Cavite was planned to liquidate the
high-ranking Spanish officers to be followed by the massacre of the friars
- They have been given a signal among the conspirators of Manila and Cavite which is the firing of
rockets from the walls of Intramuros , yet, according to the two accounts, on January 20,1872,
the district of Sampaloc celebrated the feast of Virgin of Loreto, unfortunately the participants of
the feast celebrated the occasion with the usual fireworks display. However, those who are in
Cavite mistook the fireworks as the sign for the attack, and just like what was agreed upon, the
200 men contingent headed by Seargeant Lamadrid launched an attack targeting the Spanish
officers at sight and detained the arsenal
- When the news reaches the iron fisted Gov Izquierdo, he readily ordered the reinforcement of
the Spanish forces in Cavite to combat the revolt. Unfortunately, the revolution was easily
crushed, when the manilenos who were expected to aid the Cavitenos did not arrive. Even the
leaders of the plot were killed in resulting skirmish, where father Burgos, Gomez and Zamora
were tried by a court martial and sentenced to be executed
- Patriots like Joaquin Pardo de Tavera, Antonio Ma. Regidor, Jose and Pio Basa and other Filipino
Lawyers were suspended from the practice of law. Furthermore, Gov. Izquierdo dissolved the
native regiments of artillery and ordered the creation of artillery force to be composed
exclusively of the Peninsulares.
- On 17 February 1872 in an attempt of the Spanish government and Frailocracia to instill fear
among the Filipinos so that they may never commit such daring act again, the GOMBURZA were
executed. This event was tragic but served as one of the moving forces that shaped Filipino
nationalism again
