A copy of your notes, take-aways and list of references relating to your research on
‘Communication’, the first topic in Part 1 of the course.

For details refer to Blackboard (Course documents) for “Part 1, lecture 1 –


Communication” (recorded) and to any additional materials provided.

2 Effective communication at sea (part 1 of course)


Following your research into the subject, write an essay (300 - 350 words) on the
importance of effective communication at sea, referring in particular to the importance
of communication for marine engineers.

3 Curriculum Vitae & Covering letter (part 1 of course)


Your Curriculum Vitae and a formal letter/mail which will serve as an accompanying
text to this.
Your letter/mail should be in reply to the job advertisement provided on Blackboard
(Opdrachten/portfolio)

4 SWOT analysis (part 1 of course)


A detailed SWOT analysis of yourself.
For details of how to prepare the SWOT analysis, refer to Blackboard (Course
documents) for “Part 1, lecture 2 – Showcasing the maritime manager” (recorded) and
to any additional materials provided.

5 Witness testimony (part 2 of course)
Include a copy of the slides used for your presentation/witness testimony on an
incident at sea. Include any notes to the slides which you consider relevant.

6 Problem-based learning (PBL) (part 3 of course)

7 Individual choice of text (extended essay) (part 3 of course)


Select a maritime subject of your own choice. By way of your own research (journal
articles, videos, internet sources, etc.) produce an extended essay of ± 1,250 words on
the subject chosen. Include a personal comment on the topic.

8 Self-evaluation
Evaluation yourself and your performance by way of the self evaluation document
provided on Blackboard.

9 Peer-evaluation (optional)
If possible, ask a peer to evaluate your portfolio by way of the peer evaluation
document provided on Blackboard.

10 Critical reflection
Write a short personal reflection ((± 250 words) on your experience of the course
Maritime English in the Bridging Programme.
Note: this is not an account of what you did nor is it a critique of the course (!), but a
critical reflection on how you experienced/managed the course.
