solving of ordinary life events, objects, and experiences. There are no “right” or “wrong" answers.
No special expertise in logic, mathematics, science, or art is necessary to do well on the Mental
Jogging exercises.The only criterion for success will be your willingness to produce novel and
”strange” associations. The items are obvious, difficult, challenging—but fun. Many of the
“answers” will evolve over a day, a week, or longer. Be sure to carry a pen or pencil and scratch
paper with you at all times. Mental Jogging is addictive. Share and compare your answers with
friends. Completing a Mental Jogging item will be as exhilarating as completing a swift 3-mile run.
In fact, the best analogy to Mental Jogging is physical jogging.
Mental Jogging is as important as physical jogging. Both the mind and the body must be constantly
stimulated for maximum performance. The benefits of physical jogging are well known, and
include improved cardiovascular output, lower blood pressure, less frequent illness, increased
stamina, and an increased sense of well-being. Likewise, the Mental Jogging exercises are
structured to stimulate creative problem solving and to generate novel and unique solutions to
ordinary problems. You will be less “bogged-down” at work and at home with solutions that don’t
feel right. You may be able to break out of a rut by challenging prior solutions and coming up with
more viable alternatives.
Included with the Mental Jogging exercises are ”warm-up” mental calisthenics. As in a short period
prior to the more intense workout is crucial for maximum physical jogging, performance. These
mental calisthenics should precede the Mental Jogging exercise.
In physical jogging, it would be impossible to run a marathon after only a 2-week practice and
conditioning. Likewise, it would be extremely difficult to generate 40 to 50 responses for each
Mental Jogging exercise the first time around. Thus, at first you should be extremely satisfied if you
generate the number indicated (e.g., 6, 7, 8, or 9). Later you will find yourself exceeding this
minimum number quite effortlessly and perhaps generating 50 to 60 responses per Mental Jogging
exercise. (Some of the contributors generated as many as 80 ”answers” per item!) Again, the
analogy is from physical jogging. Those first few miles at the beginning of training were difficult,
whereas the same few miles after running for a few months are now effortless and extremely
enjoyable, i.e., the “runner’s high.”
In fact, a wonderful way to stimulate the production of novel and unique solutions to the Mental
Jogging exercises is to first clear your mind through running. Try a Mental Jogging exercise before
and after a light workout. Notice the difference between the two mental states. You will probably be
more open, less structured, and innovative in your thinking after the physical jogging.
It is important to remember that the Mental Jogging exercises have no ”right” or ”wrong" answers.
Any answer, no matter how "way-out” and ”crazy,” is a correct answer. Actually, the purpose of
Mental. Jogging is for you to be able to get to those "crazy” answers that you would not ordinarily
think of. For example, take the Mental Jogging exercise "...ways to make a phone stop ringing.”
Typical answers may include: “answer it,” "don’t answer it,” ”don’t pay your phone bill,” "cut the
cord," ”tum the volume control to off,” ”blow up the utility company,” "remove the bell,” “go
deaf,” "live on an island without electricity,” "hook the bell to a light,” etc. The first few answers
are rather straightforward and are part of our experience. However, the last few answers are "way-
out.” Try this exercise with a friend and see how many of these answers or other answers are
generated.
You may also want to brainstorm with a group of friends and jointly generate answers. As you
proceed through Mental Jogging you will become more aware, sensitive, and perceptive of objects
and relationships around you. You will become an inventor in the true sense of the word.
Very little is know about the psychology of creative activities. Most scientists conceive a creative
situation to be one that combines realistic thinking and imagination. Mental Jogging offers
structured exercises that combine many of the characteristics of both problem solving and fantasy.
The Mental Jogging exercises resemble fantasy because they call upon the reorganization of past
experiences as well as present needs. However, the ”solutions” are far from pure fantasy in that they
are under voluntary control. The processes of combining both realistic thinking, imagination, and
fantasy vary widely among individuals. Certain groups of people engage in occupations that others
consider highly creative. However, many of us have jobs and routines that do not allow the full
expression of our creative powers. From the time we were children, we have been told "what do
do,” “how to do it,” and ”when to do it.” Each of us has passed through fairly set developmental
stages in which both intellectual and social expectations were rigidly enforced by society and
friends. Hence, we proceeded through our. education, first job, and social relationships without
thinking about the “why” involved in our decisions. Consequentially, most of us have learned quite
adaptively to be "uncreative." We may feel we are stuck in dead-end jobs, supervised by a boss who
doesn’t know as much as we do, and given tasks to perform that are rather narrow and ill-defined.
Mental Jogging is designed to give you an opportunity to become more sensitive, aware, and alive
to objects and relationships around you. As you explore your own answers and share them with
others, you will, in turn, learn more about yourself. The fascinating aspect of Mental Jogging is that
answers will change as you grow older. Children may have answers to the MentalJogging exercises
that are quite different from those of adults, though both may be equally “right.“ Many children
have not had the opportunity to be controlled by definite patterns, rules, and habits, as much as
older folks. The tensions between conformity and spontaneity have not as yet developed. In most
organizations, institutions, and even families, emphasis is often placed on the proper forms and
techniques, rather than on expressing one’s own emotions, perceptions, and ideas. Students acquire
conformist modes of expression rather than develop free and spontaneous ones. They have learned
that in order to be successful, conformity and dependence are reinforced. Likewise, it is often
difficult to both satisfy one’s creative potential and to rise within an organization.
It may be difficult, but not impossible!The practice of MentalJogging will make you a more creative
problem solver within your organization. Any business problem may be approached with the same
spontaneity of expression as your completion of the MentalJogging exercises. Take, for example,
the problem of ”...why Factory X is not producing the same quality materials as Factory Y, although
the two plants are ’similar’ in every respect.” Some typical solutions may involve: ”personnel,”
”working conditions,” ”fringe benefits,” “work-break spacing,”"poorrecord-keeping,”“unionism,”
”equipment failure,” "sabotage,"etc. Can you think of 6 other reasons?
Regular practice increases skill and maximizes performance. Since there are 365 Mental Jogging
exercises, you may want to complete one exercise per day, preferably after one warm- up
calisthenic or physical jogging. Your productivity will increase dramatically if you practice
regularly.
Typical "answers” are included with each MentalJogging exercise. These answers should be used
only as a guide. The answers were generated in response to an advertisement in the Mensa Bulletin.
Mensa is an international organization of individuals who place in the upper 2 percent of the
population mentally, as measured by standardized tests of intelligence. Some answers were also
generated by high school students in New Jersey and Connecticut. A list of those contributors
follows the exercises.
Your total score depends upon the number of responses generated for any one Mental Jogging
exercise. The exercises in this book ask variously for a minimum of 6, 7, 8, or 9 responses. The
minimum number of responses (6, 7, 8, or 9, depending upon the exercise) receive 1 point each.
You then receive bonuses of 2, 3, 4, or 5 points for every response beyond the minimum. Thus in
the exercise ”seven or more reasons why blind people ski,” you would receive 7 points if you listed
7 reasons, 6 points for 6 reasons, 5 points for 5 reasons, and so on. If you generated 8 to this
exercise, you would receive 2 bonus points. Bonus points are awarded for 7, 8, 9, or 10 or more
answers, depending upon the exercise. Likewise Super Bonus responses, Extra Super Bonus
responses, and Genius responses are worth 3, 4, and 5 points respectively. In order to simplify your
computation of the total score, refer to the Scoring Key on page 11.

365 Mental Jogging exercises. (These individuals will be listed as Mental Jogging Marathoners in
possible future editions of this book.) Finally, if you would like to be considered as a Contributor to

below. You will be sent a list of 20 new Mental Jogging exercises to be completed and possibly
included in Mental Jogging II.

just a tiny amount of the massive scientific literature on creativity. Most college libraries have the
cited journals. Leaf through a few. It is stimulating to read how scientists have gone about the
business of measuring creativity and outlining those variables that will maximize the expression of
creativity.
