The Myth Behind the Musical: “Daragang Magayon”

This myth on the origin of Mount Mayon is centered on an immortal tale of love familiar to all people in
the Bicol region. They would like to believe that Magayon, the beautiful maiden for whom the volcano is
named ,and her lover Ulap must be kissing.The only daughter of local chieftain Makusog, Magayon falls in love
with Ulap, the brave son of a neighboring tribe’s chieftain. However, a jealous suitor named Pagtuga kidnaps
Makusog and threatens to kill him unless Magayon marries him instead of Ulap. With hands tied in order to
save her father’s life, Magayon sadly agrees.
Just as they are about to be wed, Ulap appears at the ceremony and kills Pagtuga.Magayon rushes into
Ulap’s arms but she is unfortunately struck by a stray arrow. As she lies dying in his arms, Ulap is also fatally

stabbed in the back by one of Pagtuga’s men. The two lovers are laid to rest.The mound of earth under which
they are buried grows bigger with the passage of time. Eventually, the mound rises up to become known as “the
volcano with a perfect cone”named Mayon.
The breathtaking symmetry of Mt. Mayon has inspired works by visual and performing artists alike. An
example of this is composer Francisco Buencamino”s fantasy for “ Piano and Orchestra, Mayon”. This
composition depicts in musical form the carefree life in the region until the volcano erupted and destroyed all
life and vegetation. When the dust settles, however, the people return to their usual chores and enjoy life once
more.

Hearing, seeing, and enjoying outstanding performing talents-from drama and musical to dance
– can give anyone the thrill of a lifetime. That exciting moment after the houselights are dimmed and
just before the curtain rises as you wait to catch your first glimpse of the world behind the footlights is
unlike any other experience.
Theater productions are usually done by professionals who are inspired and enthusiastic about
their work and who make their living on the stage. They cover all phases of theater-acting, staging,
production, methods, and directing-to bring on the legitimate stage that the best actors play for each
season.

the procedure in your textbook Page 212-213, entitled “Making Theatrical Stage” and
answer some process question based on what you have learned.
1. You can make a simple “stage” out of a small box like shoebox with a lid.
2. Cut down all the four-corners of the box. Now you will have a flat shape.
3. Leaves one short side blank. On the other three sides, paint scenes that you think are good for the set that
you have in mind. Include all the other props that you need to complete your set.
4. You could glue in a prop, such as a tree or a wave, in the center of the base. Place prop(s) that you think
will tickle one’s imagination when seen
5. Then paint the inside of the lid with sky blue color.
6. You will need to cut a peephole in the middle of the unpainted end of box. You also need a hole in the
lid so that light can shine into the box.
7. Join the sides of the box back together and put the lid on.
8. Hold your box up to a light source and look through the peephole to see your finished and complete
stage set.

UNIT 1: OTHER DANCE FORMS (CHEER DANCE, STREET DANCE,
AND FESTIVAL ANCE)
Cheer Dance is a recreational activity and competitive sport composed of an organized
routine. It includes required performance element and skills like dance and gymnastics. Cheer
dancers, when not competing, help in encouraging the crowds to cheer in team sports event.
Festival Dance are cultural dances that are performed by a group of people that share the same
culture. These dances are performed either to honor a patron saint (Sinulog in Cebu) or to show
gratitude for a bountiful harvest (Kadayawan in Davao City).
Street Dances are popular in festivals like in the Kadayawan Festival in Davao City. This
festival celebrates the region’s bountiful harvest and marks the survival of their native people. The
celebration includes a parade of flowers or float parades and people dancing on the street known as
“Indak-indak sa Dalan.”
