G METRIC SCREW THREADS — M PROFILE ANSI 81.13M 1979 IF NOTES: 1. ANS! 81.13M . 1979 has been abstracted and editorially reformated to include only the dimensions and other relevant data for those combinatlong of sizes, thread pitches and tolerance grades associated with the metyle fasteners covered in this book. Complete data on all metric screw thnecds with the M profile are contained in ANSI B1.13M - 1978. Copies of this ston tet, are available from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, United Engineering Center, 245 E, 47th St, New York, NY 10017. 2. Screw threads produced to this standard are fully interchangeable with threads conforming to other national and international standards which are ‘based on the ISO 68 basic profile and ISO 965/1 tolerance practices, Terabe, Boundary protile tor threads defined in ANSI/ASME B1.18M (see F500, page A—28) is based upon the basic profile of this standacs Threads produced to ANS! B1.13M are functionally interchangeable with those produced to ANSVASME B1.18M of the same size and tolerance clase. However, threads produced {0 either of the standards may not meet all of the requirements of the other. 4, The material presented in this abstract is copied without technical change from ANSI B1.13M - 1979. In the abstracting and retormating it w necessary to renumber some of the paragraphs, figures and tables to main. tain continuity, 4. INTRODUCTION 14 General 1.1.4 This Standard contains general metric standards for a60° symmetrical screw thread with a basic ISO 68 profile designated M pro- file, The M profile threads of tolerance class GHi6g are intended for metric applications where inch class 2A/2B have been used. At the minimum materia! limits, the 6/69 results ina looser fit than the 24/28. Tabular data is also provided for a tighter tolerance fit exter. nal thread of class 4969 which is approxi. mately equivalent to the inch class 3A but with an allowance applied. Formulation and tolerancing data is included for applications requiring other fits. Note: [A AHSHIAnGM i approximately equivalent to ‘class 94/B fi in the ncn System, 1.1.2 Itis the responsibility of the engineer or designer to select, for acceptance gaging, those features important to the end use by designating the proper gaging or measuring methods. See ANSI B1.3M, page A~—36, for gaging systems and their designations 1.1.3 The reference temperature is 20°C for dimensions defined by this system, 1.1.4 All dimensions and all values in the for- mulas are expressed in millimeters unless otherwise noted. 2. TERMINOLOGY 24 Metric Screw Thread Definitions 2.1.4 Allowance. For this document: the mi ‘mum nominal clearance between a prescribed dimension and its basic dimension. It is Aumerically equal to the absolute value of the ISO term “fundamental deviation.” Note: Allowance is not an 80 metric sew thread {erm but will be usee together withthe ISO term “\undamental deviation.” 2.4.2 Basic Thread Profile. The cyclical out: fine, in an axial plane, of the permanently established boundary between the provinces the external and internal threads. All devia tions are with respect to this boundary, See Figures 1 and 5, A-8 ANSI B1.13M, 1979 METRIC SCREW THREADS — M PROFILE Internal threads De External threads 0.25 HH = 0.108 SH = 0.924 0.625H = 0.541 253 506P 760P 265P 216 FIG. 1. BASIC M THREAD PROFILE (ISO 68 BASIC PROFILE) (Gee Table 1 Tor Explanation of Symbols) 2.1.3 Bolt Thread (External Thread). The term used in ISO metric thread standards to describe all extemal threads. All symbols associated with external threads are desig. Rated with lower case letters. This standard will refer only to external threads in accor- dance with U.S. practices. 2.1.4 Clearance. The difference between the size of the internal thread and that of the ex- ternal thread when the latter is the smaller, 2.4.5 Crest Diameter. The major diameter of an external thread and the minor diameter of an internal throad, 2.1.8 Design Profiles. The maximum material profiles permitted for external and internal threads for a specified tolerance class. See Figures 2 and 3. 2.1.7 Deviation. An ISO term forthe algebraical difference between a size (actual, measured, maximum, minimum, etc.) and’ the corre: sponding basic size, 2.1.7.4 Fundamental Deviation, That one of the two (upper and lower) deviations which Is conventionally chosen to define the position of the tolerance zone in relation to the basi¢ size, The convention is: (a) If both deviations have tho same sign (or one is zero) that devia. tion which is numerically the smaller is the fundamental deviation. See 2.1.1, 5.1.5 and Fig. 5, Note: The U.S. term “allowance” will be used as a brimary term, In this Standars, whore ap- plicable 2.1.7.2 Lower Deviation. The algebraical ait. ference between the minimum limit of size and the corresponding basic size, See 5.1.4. 2.1.7.3 Upper Deviation. The algebraical dit- ference between the maximum limit of size and the corresponding basic size. See 5.1.3. 2.1.8 Fit. The relationship existing between two corresponding extemal and internal threads with respect to the amount of clear- ance or interference which is present when they are assembled. The relationship is deter- mined for threads by the fit on the functional diameter. See 5.1.6. 2.1.8 Limiting Profiles. The profiles for exter- fai and internal threads are both the maxi- mum material condition profiles and the minimum material condition profiles. The minimum material condition profiles are the design minimum limiting profile for external threads and the design maximum limiting profile for intemal threads which are estab- lished by the application of tolerances to the design profiles (maximum material profiles). ‘The design profiles are positioned from the basic profile by the application of allowances (fundamental deviations). See Figures 6 and 7. 2.1.10 Functional Diameter. The pitch diameter of the enveloping thread of perfect pitch, lead and flank angles but clear at crests and roots and of specified length of engagement. Also called virtual diameter, ef- fective size, virtual pitch diameter and virtual effective diameter, 2.1.11 Nut Thread (Internal Thread). A term used in ISO metric thread standards to describe all internal threads, All symbols associated with internal threads are designated with upper case letters. This standard will refer to the term “internal thread” in accordance with U.S. practice. 2.1.42 Tolerance. The total amount of varia- tion permitted for the size of a dimension. It is the difference between the maximum limit Of size and the minimum timit of size (ie., algebraical difference between the upper deviation and the lower deviation), The tolerance is an absolute vaiue without sign Tolerance for threads is applied to the design size in the direction of minimum material. On external threads the tolerance is applied negatively. On internal threads the tolerance |s applied positively. 2.1.18 Tolerance Class. The combination of a tolerance position with a tolerance grade, It specifies the allowance (fundamental devia- tion) and tolerance for the pitch and major diameters of external threads and the pitch and minor diameters of internal threads. 2.1.14 Tolerance Grade. A series of tolerances intended to provide the same level of accuracy for all basic sizes. 2.1.15 Tolerance Position. The position of the tolerance zone In relation to the basic size, defined by the allowance (fundamental de. mn). 2.1.16 Tolerance Zone. The zone between the design size profile and the minimum material size profile. 22 General Symbols 2.2.1 The general symbols used to describe the metric screw thread forms are shown in Table 4 3. SCREW THREAD PROFILE 3.1 General 3.1.1 The M profile with 6g tolerance class provides for a smal! allowance (fundamental Geviation) in the direction of minimum material from the maximum diameters for external threads. Itis to be used as ametric equivalent of the class 2A, aliowance thread, in the inch series. It can be used to accommadate plated finishes or other coatings. The M profile with a minimum root radius of 0.125P on the exter nal thread is desirable for all threads but is Fequired for threaded mechanical fasteners of ISO 898/1 property class 8.8 (minimum ten. sile strength 800 MPa) and stronger.
