Ray Optics

Part 1

1. A double convex lens of glass of refractive index 1.5 has its both surfaces of equal radii of
curvature of 20cm each. An object of height 5cm is placed at a distance of 15cm from the
lens. Calculate the size of the image formed.(Ans: Height of the image is 20.8cm)
2. A convex lens of refractive index 1.5 has a focal length of 18cm in air. Calculate the change
in its focal length when it is immersed in water of refractive index 4/3. (54cm)
3. Draw a labelled ray diagram to show the image formation in a refracting type
astronomical telescope. Why should the diameter of the objective of a telescope be large?

Part 2

4. A ray of light passing through an equilateral triangular glass prism from air undergoes
minimum deviation when angle of incidence is 3/4 th of the angle of prism. Calculate the
speed of light in the prism. (2.12 x 10 8ms-1)
5. A compound microscope uses an objective lens of focal length 4cm and eyepiece lens of
focal length 10cm. An object is placed at 6cm from the objective lens. Calculate the
magnifying power of the compound microscope. Also calculate the length of the
microscope.(19.1cm or 22cm)
6. A compound microscope, an object is placed at a distance of 1.5cm from the objective of
focal length 1.25cm. If the eyepiece has a focal length of 5cm and the final image is
formed at the near point, estimate the magnifying power of the microscope.(-30)
7. A small telescope has an objective lens of focal length 150cm and an eye piece of focal
length 5cm. If this telescope is used to view a 100m high tower 3km away, find the height
of the final image when it is formed 25 cm away from the eye piece.(30cm)

Part 3

8. The total magnification produced by a compound microscope is 20cm. The magnification

produced by the eyepiece is 5. The microscope is focussed on a certain object. The
distance between the objective and eyepiece is observed to be 14cm. If the least distance
of distinct vision is 20cm, Calculate the focal length of the objective and the eyepiece.
(2cm)
9. A giant refracting telescope has an objective lens of focal length 15cm. If an eye piece of
focal length 1.0cm is used, what is the angular magnification of the tescope?(1500)
10. If the telescope in the above case is used to view the moon, what is the diameter of the
image of the moon formed by the objective lens? The diameter of the moon is 3.48x10 6m
and the radius of lunar orbit is 3.8x10 8m.(13.7cm)
