In the Philippines, having balanced nutrients are not the focus of the plebeian. RENI— defined as the level of
intake of energy and nutrients adequate for maintaining a healthy Filipino— includes the six essential nutrients,
protein, calcium, vitamins, folate, electrolytes, etc. The article talks about the recommended essentials to meet
the daily requirements of individuals in a specific life stage and gender group. Children, for example, require more
energy due to their fast growth and development, which means more carbohydrates and protein. Pregnant
women have higher nutritional needs to promote fetal development, so they need more iron supplements and
folate. And to preserve bone health, older adults may require additional minerals such as calcium. As Filipinos
don't usually adhere to such diets, based on the article, individuals need to increase their consumption of milk
and milk products as much as the amount of green leafy vegetables and fruits they consume. On the contrary,
Filipino should keep note of the recommended fat intake of 20-30% of their diet and not over-exceed, which is
what we commonly do— who doesn't like lechon anyways?
Overall, despite our love for eating, we should still consider the risks we can acquire by not adhering to the
recommended energy and nutrient intake. Following these recommendations by eating a well-balanced diet rich
in nutrients from a variety of food sources will help ensure optimal health outcomes throughout our life.
