the use of high and large seats and beds.

Buddhaṁ jīvita-pariyantaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.

Ye ca Buddhā atītā ca, ye ca Buddhā anāgatā,

Paccuppannā ca ye Buddhā, ahaṁ vandāmi


sabbadā

Natthi me saraṇaṁ aññaṁ, Buddho me saraṇaṁ


varaṁ,

Etena sacca-vajjena hotu me jayamaṅgalaṁ.

Uttamaṅgena vande’haṁ pada-paṁsu-


varuttamaṁ,

Buddhe yo khalito doso, Buddho khamatu taṁ


mamaṁ.

Devotion to the Buddha
Such is he, the Gracious One, the Worthy One,
the Perfectly Enlightened One, the one endowed
with understanding and good conduct, the
Fortunate One, the one who understands the
worlds, the unsurpassed guide for those people
who need taming, the Teacher of gods and
men, the Buddha, the Gracious One.
I go for life-long refuge to the Buddha right up
until Nibbāna.
Those who were Buddhas in the past, those who
will be Buddhas in the future, and those who are
Buddhas in the present, I worship them every
day!
For me there is no other refuge, for me the
Buddha is the best refuge!

By this declaration of the truth may you have


the blessing of success!
With my head I worship the most excellent dust
of his feet,

for any fault or wrong against the Buddha may


the Buddha forgive me for that!
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

Dhamma-Vandanā
Svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo, sandiṭṭhiko,
akāliko, ehi-passiko, opanayiko, paccattaṁ
veditabbo viññūhi ti.

Dhammaṁ jīvita-pariyantaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.


Ye ca Dhammā atītā ca,
ye ca Dhammā anāgatā, Paccuppannā ca ye
dhammā, ahaṁ vandāmi sabbadā.
Natthi me saraṇaṁ aññaṁ,

Dhammo me saraṇaṁ varaṁ,

Etena sacca-vajjena
Hotu me jayamaṅgalaṁ.
Uttamaṅgena vande’haṁ
Dhammaṁ ca tividhaṁ varaṁ,
Dhamme yo khalito doso

Dhammo khamatu taṁ mamaṁ.


Sādhu! Sādhu! Sādhu!

Devotion to the Dhamma
The Dhamma has been well-proclaimed by the
Gracious One, it is visible, not subject to time,
inviting inspection, onward leading, and can be
understood by the wise for themselves.

I go for life-long refuge to the Dhamma right up


until Nibbāna. That which was Dhamma in the
past, that which will be Dhamma in the future,
and that which is Dhamma in the present, I
worship it every day!
For me there is no other refuge, for me the
Dhamma is the best refuge!

By this declaration of the truth may you have


the blessing of success!
With my head I worship the excellent threefold
Dhamma,

for any fault or wrong against the Dhamma may


the Dhamma forgive me for that!
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

Saṅgha-Vandanā
Suppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,

Ujuppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,

Ñāyappaṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,

Sāmīcippaṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho;

Yadidaṁ: cattāri purisa-yugāni aṭṭha purisa-


puggalā, esa bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
āhuneyyo, pāhuneyyo, dakkhiṇeyyo, añjali-
karaṇīyo, anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassa.

Saṅghaṁ jīvita-pariyantaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.

Ye ca Saṅghā atītā ca, ye ca Saṅghā anāgatā,

Paccuppannā ca ye Saṅghā, ahaṁ vandāmi


sabbadā.

Natthi me saraṇaṁ aññaṁ,

Devotion to the Sangha
The Gracious One's Saṅgha of disciples are good
in their practice, the Gracious One's Saṅgha of
disciples are straight in their practice, the
Gracious One's Saṅgha of disciples are
systematic in their practice, the Gracious One's
Saṅgha of disciples are correct in their practice,
that is to say, the four pairs of persons, the
eight individual persons, this is the Gracious
One's Saṅgha of disciples, they are worthy of
offerings, of hospitality, of gifts, and of
reverential salutation, they are an unsurpassed
field of merit for the world.

I go for life-long refuge to the Sangha right up


until Nibbāna.

Those who were the Sangha in the past, those


who will be the Sangha in the future, and those
who are the Sangha in the present, I praise
them every day!

For me there is no other refuge, for me the


Sangha is the best refuge! By this declaration of
the truth may you have the blessing of success!

Buddha-Pūjā
Yāvatā Bhagavā loke tiṭṭheyya tava sāsanaṁ,
Tāvatā patigaṇhātu pūjā lokānukampayā.

(1) Sittha-Pūjā
Sittha-telappadittena dīpena tama-dhaṁsinā,
Tiloka-dīpaṁ Sambuddhaṁ pūjayāmi tamo-
nudaṁ.

(2) Telapadīpa-Pūjā
Gandha-telappadittena dīpena tama-dhaṁsinā,
Tiloka-dīpaṁ Sambuddhaṁ pūjayāmi tamo-
nudaṁ.

(3) Sugandhi-Pūjā
Sugandhi-kāya-vadanaṁ ananta-guṇa-
gandhinaṁ,
Sugandhinā’haṁ gandhena pūjayāmi
Tathāgataṁ.

(4) Puppha-Pūjā
Vaṇṇa-gandha-guṇopetaṁ etaṁ kusuma-
santatiṁ, Pūjayāmi Munindassa siri-pāda-
saroruhe.

Offering to the Buddha
Blessed One, as long as your sāsana prevails in
theworld, may you, out of compassion for [all
beings in] the world, accept [these] offerings.
(1) Offering of Candle
With this blazing candle lamp that dispels the
darkness I [make an] offering to the All
Enlightened One, who is a light [that brightens]
the three worlds and is a destroyer of the
darkness [of ignorance].
(2) Offering of Oil Lamp
With this blazing oil lamp that dispels the
darkness I [make an] offering to the All
Enlightened One, who is a light [that brightens]
the three worlds and is a destroyer of the
darkness [of ignorance].
(3) Offering of Incense
To the Tathāgata, fragrant of body and speech
and possessing the scent of infinite virtue, I
offer this incense.
(4) Offering of Flowers
Endowed with the qualities of colour and
fragrance, this flower collection I offer at the
lotus feet of the King of Sages (i.e. the Buddha).

Pūjemi Buddhaṁ Kusumena nena,
Puññena me tena labhāmi mokkhaṁ;
Pupphaṁ milāyāti yathā idaṁ me,
Kāyo tathā yāti vināsa-bhāvaṁ.

(5) Pānīya-Pūjā
Sugandhaṁ sītalaṁ kappaṁ pasannamadhuraṁ
subhaṁ,
Pānīyametaṁ Bhagavā patigaṇhātumuttama.

(6) Khīrapānaka-Pūjā
Adhivāsetu no Bhante paṇītaṁ khīra-pānakaṁ,
Anukampaṁ upādāya patigaṇhātumuttama.

(7) Bhojana-Pūjā
Adhivāsetu no Bhante bhojanaṁ parikappitaṁ,
Anukampaṁ upādāya patigaṇhātumuttama.

(8) Vyañjana-Pūjā
Adhivāsetu no Bhante vyañjanaṁ parikappitaṁ,
Anukampaṁ upādāya patigaṇhātumuttama.

I offer this flower to the Buddha. By this merit of
mine, may I gain deliverance [from saṁsāra];
just as this flower [will] fade, so [, too,] my
body [will] go to the state of destruction.

(5) Offering of Water


Blessed One, Greatest One, may [you] accept
this [offering of] water which is fragrant, cool,
suitable, clear, sweet and pleasant [to drink].

(6) Offering of Milk


Venerable Sir, Greatest One, may [you], out of
compassion for us, accept this excellent drink of
milk.

(7) Offering of Staple Food


Venerable Sir, Greatest One, may [you], out of
compassion for us, accept this prepared [staple]
food.

(8) Offering of Non-staple Food


Venerable Sir, Greatest One, may [you], out of
compassion for us, accept this prepared [non-
staple] food.

Adhivāsetu no Bhante phalāphalaṁ
parikappitaṁ, Anukampaṁ upādāya
patigaṇhātumuttama.

(10) Khajjaka-Pūjā
Adhivāsetu no Bhante khajjakaṁ parikappitaṁ,
Anukampaṁ upādāya patigaṇhātumuttama.

Venerable Sir, Greatest One, may [you], out of
compassion for us, accept this prepared fruit.

Venerable Sir, Greatest One, may [you], out of
compassion for us, accept this prepared sweet-
food.

Maṅgalasuttaṁ
Yaṁ maṅgalaṁ dvādasahi cintayiṁsu sadevakā,
Sotthānaṁ nādhigacchanti aṭṭhattiṁsañca
maṅgalaṁ

Desitaṁ devadevena sabbapāpavināsanaṁ,


Sabbalokahitatthāya maṅgalaṁ taṁ bhaṇāma
he.

Evaṁ me sutaṁ – ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā


sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa
ārāme.
Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā
abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ
obhāsetvā
yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā
bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ
gāthāya ajjhabhāsi –

“Bahū devā manussā ca, maṅgalāni acintayuṁ;


Ākaṅkhamānā sotthānaṁ, brūhi
maṅgalamuttamaṁ.”

The Discourse on the Blessings
What a blessing is was thought about by gods
and men for twelve (years), but they did not
attain (true) safety; the thirty-eight blessings,

which were preached by the god of gods make


all that is bad perish. For the whole world’s
benefit and welfare we will recite that blessed
safeguard.

Thus I have heard: at one time the Gracious


One was dwelling near Sāvatthī at
Anāthapiṇḍika’s grounds in Jeta’s Park. Then a
certain deva, towards the end of the night,
having lit up the whole of Jeta’s Park with his
surpassing beauty, approached the Gracious
One, and after approaching and worshipping the
Gracious One, he stood on one side. While
standing on one side that deva addressed the
Gracious One with a verse:

“Many are the gods and the men who have


thought about the blessings hoping for safety:
now please say what is the supreme blessing.”

“Asevanā ca bālānaṁ, paṇḍitānañca sevanā;
Pūjā ca pūjaneyyānaṁ, etaṁ
maṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Patirūpadesavāso ca, pubbe ca katapuññatā;


Attasammāpaṇidhi ca, etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Bāhusaccañca sippañca, vinayo ca susikkhito;


Subhāsitā ca yā vācā, etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Mātāpitu upaṭṭhānaṁ, puttadārassa saṅgaho;


Anākulā ca kammantā, etaṁ
maṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Dānañca dhammacariyā ca, ñātakānañca


saṅgaho;
Anavajjāni kammāni, etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Āratī viratī pāpā, majjapānā ca saṁyamo;


Appamādo ca dhammesu, etaṁ
maṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Not associating with fools, but associating with
the wise, honouring those worthy of honour:
this is the supreme blessing.

Living in a suitable place, formerly having done


good deeds, aspiring in a right way oneself: this
is the supreme blessing.
Having great learning and craft, and being
disciplined and well trained, and whatever words
are well spoken: this is the supreme blessing.
Attendance on one’s mother and father, looking
after one’s wife and children, with works that
are not agitating: this is the supreme blessing.

Giving, and living by the Dhamma, and looking


after one’s relatives, (performing) actions that
are blameless: this is the supreme blessing.

Abstinence, avoidance of bad deeds, restraint


from intoxicating drink being heedful regarding
(all) things: this is the supreme blessing.

“Gāravo ca nivāto ca, santuṭṭhi ca kataññutā;
Kālena dhammassavanaṁ, etaṁ
maṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Khantī ca sovacassatā, samaṇānañca


dassanaṁ; Kālena dhammasākacchā, etaṁ
maṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Tapo ca brahmacariyañca, ariyasaccāna


dassanaṁ; Nibbānasacchikiriyā ca, etaṁ
maṅgalamuttamaṁ.

“Phuṭṭhassa lokadhammehi, cittaṁ yassa na


kampati; Asokaṁ virajaṁ khemaṁ, etaṁ

“Etādisāni katvāna, sabbatthamaparājitā;


Sabbattha sotthiṁ gacchanti, taṁ tesaṁ
maṅgalamuttaman”ti.

Etena sacca-vajjena, sotthi vo/me hotu sabbadā.


Etena sacca-vajjena, sabba-rogo vinassatu.
Etena sacca-vajjena, hotu vo/me jaya-
maṅgalaṁ.

Having respect, being humble, being satisfied
and grateful, listening to Dhamma at the right
time: this is the supreme blessing.

Being patient and easily spoken to, seeing


ascetics, discussing Dhamma at the right time:
this is the supreme blessing.

Austere, living spiritually, insight into the noble


truths, the experience of Nibbāna: this is the
supreme blessing.

He whose mind does not waver, when it is


touched by things of this world, (being)
griefless, dustless, and secure: this is the
supreme blessing.
Having done as here directed, they are
undefeated everywhere, they go everywhere in
safety: for them this is the supreme blessing.”

By this declaration of the truth may you/I be


safe at all times! By this declaration of the truth
may all disease be destroyed! By this declaration
of the truth may you/I have the blessing of
success!

Yānīdha bhūtāni samāgatāni,
Bhummāni vā yāni va antalikkhe;
Sabbeva bhūtā sumanā bhavantu,
Athopi sakkacca suṇantu bhāsitaṁ.

Mettaṁ karotha mānusiyā pajāya;
Divā ca ratto ca haranti ye baliṁ,
Tasmā hi ne rakkhatha appamattā.

Saggesu vā yaṁ ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ;
Na no samaṁ atthi tathāgatena,
Idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ;

Khayaṁ virāgaṁ amataṁ paṇītaṁ,


Yadajjhagā sakyamunī samāhito;
Na tena dhammena samatthi kiñci,
Idampi dhamme ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ;

Whatever beings have come together here,
whether of the earth or in the firmament, may
the minds of all those beings be happy, and may
they listen carefully to what is said.

Therefore, all of you beings, be attentive, be


friendly towards this generation of men, they
who bring offerings by day and by night,
therefore, being heedful, you must protect
them.

Whatever riches there are - here or elsewhere


or in the heavens - that excellent treasure is not
equal unto the Realized One, this excellent
treasure is in the Buddha: by virtue of this truth
may there be safety!

(Pollutants’) end, dispassion, deathlessness,


excellence: which the concentrated Sakyan sage
attained, there is nothing that is equal to that
state, this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Yaṁ buddhaseṭṭho parivaṇṇayī suciṁ,
Samādhimānantarikaññamāhu;
Samādhinā tena samo na vijjati,
Idampi dhamme ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ;

Ye puggalā aṭṭha sataṁ pasatthā,


Cattāri etāni yugāni honti;
Te dakkhiṇeyyā sugatassa sāvakā,
Etesu dinnāni mahapphalāni;
Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ,
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

Ye suppayuttā manasā daḷhena,


Nikkāmino gotamasāsanamhi;
Te pattipattā amataṁ vigayha,
Laddhā mudhā nibbutiṁ bhuñjamānā;
Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ,
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

Yathindakhīlo pathavissito siyā,


Catubbhi vātehi asampakampiyo;
Tathūpamaṁ sappurisaṁ vadāmi,
Yo ariyasaccāni avecca passati;

That which the Buddha, the Great One, praised
as pure, the concentration said to have prompt
(result), no equal to that concentration is found,
this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma: by
virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Those eight individuals praised by the good,


there are these four pairs (of individuals), those
disciples of the Fortunate One are worthy of
gifts, those things that have been given to them
have great fruit, this excellent treasure is in the
Saṅgha: by virtue of this truth may there be
safety!

Those who have firm and devoted minds,


without sense desire in Gotama’s dispensation,
those who have attained, and entered the
deathless, are enjoying emancipation, gained for
free, this excellent treasure is in the Saṅgha: by
virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Just as a locking post stuck fast in the earth


does not waver on account of the four winds, in
the same way, I say, is the true person, the one
who sees the noble truths completely,

Sahāvassa dassanasampadāya,
Tayassu dhammā jahitā bhavanti;

Sīlabbataṁ vāpi yadatthi kiñci.
Catūhapāyehi ca vippamutto,
Chaccābhiṭhānāni abhabba kātuṁ;
Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ,
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

Kiñcāpi so kamma karoti pāpakaṁ,


Kāyena vācā uda cetasā vā;
Abhabba so tassa paṭicchadāya,
Abhabbatā diṭṭhapadassa vuttā;

this excellent treasure is in the Saṅgha: by
virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Those who clearly distinguish the noble truths,


which were well preached by the one with deep
wisdom, however great they become in
heedlessness still they do not take up an eighth
existence, this excellent treasure is in the
Saṅgha: by virtue of this truth may there be
safety!

With his attainment of (liberating) insight there


are a triad of things that are given up:
embodiment view, uncertainty, and whatever
(grasping at) virtue and practices there is. He is
free from (rebirth in) the four lower worlds, he
is incapable of the six great crimes. this
excellent treasure is in the Saṅgha: by virtue of
this truth may there be safety!

Whatever bad action there is that he performs


by way of body, or of speech, or of mind, he is
incapable of covering it up, this incapacity is said
of one who has seen the state (of peace),

Virattacittāyatike bhavasmiṁ;

Just like a tall woodland tree crowned with
blossom in the summer months, in the early
summer, in the same way he preached the
Dhamma which is best, which goes to Nibbāna,
the highest benefit, this excellent treasure is in
the Buddha: by virtue of this truth may there be
safety!
The best one, knowing the best, giving the best,
brought the best, brought the best, unsurpassed
he preached the best Dhamma. This excellent
treasure is in the Buddha: by virtue of this truth
may there be safety!
The old is destroyed, and nothing new is
produced, (their) minds are unexcited by future
rebirth, they have destroyed the seeds, and have
no desire for growth, the wise are still, just as
this lamp (is still), this excellent treasure is in the
Saṅgha: by virtue of this truth may there be
safety!
Whatever beings have come together here,
whether of the earth or in the firmament, the
Realised One is revered by gods and men, we
honour the Buddha - may there be safety!

kulesvananugiddho.

Na ca khuddamācare kiñci, yena viññū pare


upavadeyyuṁ;

The Discourse on Loving Kindness
Meditation (Metta)
Because of the power of that (safeguard) the
yakkhas could not make fearful (sights) appear,
by practicing that diligently night and day he
sleeps happily, and while sleeping does not see
anything bad - it is endowed with such qualities,
we will recite that safeguard.
What should be done by one skilled in
goodness, who has comprehended the state of
peace: he ought to be able, straight, and
upright, easy to speak to, meek, without
conceit,
satisfied (with little), easy to support, free from
duties, and light in living,
with faculties at peace, prudent, not forward,
and greedless among the families,

he should not do the slightest thing whereby


others who are wise might find fault (with him).

“(May all beings) be happy and secure, may all


beings in their hearts be happy!

Ye keci pāṇabhūtatthi, tasā vā thāvarā
vanavasesā;
Dīghā vā yeva mahantā, majjhimā rassakā
aṇukathūlā.
Diṭṭhā vā yeva adiṭṭhā, ye va dūre vasanti
avidūre;
Bhūtā va sambhavesī va, sabbasattā bhavantu
sukhitattā.

Na paro paraṁ nikubbetha, nātimaññetha


katthaci na kañci;

Byārosanā paṭighasaññā, nāññamaññassa


dukkhamiccheyya.

Mātā yathā niyaṁ puttamāyusā


ekaputtamanurakkhe;
Evampi sabbabhūtesu, mānasaṁ bhāvaye
aparimāṇaṁ.

Mettañca sabbalokasmi, mānasaṁ bhāvaye


aparimāṇaṁ;

Whatsoever breathing beings there are -
trembling, firm, or any other (beings),
whether they be long or great, of middle (size),
short, tiny, or of compact (body),
those who are seen, and those who are unseen,
those who live far away, those who are near,
those who are born, and those who still seek
birth may all beings in their hearts be happy!”

No one should cheat another, nor should he


despise anyone wherever he is,

he should not long for suffering for another


because of anger or resentment

In the same way as a mother would protect her


child, her only child, with her life,
so too towards all beings one should develop
the measureless thought (of friendliness).

Towards the entire world he should develop the


measureless thought of friendliness,

Uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyañca, asambādhaṁ
averamasapattaṁ.

Tiṭṭhaṁ caraṁ nisinno va, sayāno yāvatāssa


vitamiddho;

Etaṁ satiṁ adhiṭṭheyya, brahmametaṁ

Diṭṭhiñca anupaggamma, sīlavā dassanena

above, below, and across (the middle), without
barriers, hate, or enmity.

Standing, walking, sitting, lying, for as long as


he is without torpor,

he should be resolved on this mindfulness, for


this, they say here, is the (true) spiritual life.

Without going near a (wrong) view, virtuous,


and endowed with (true) insight,
having removed greed towards sense pleasures,
he does not come to lie in a womb again.

By this declaration of the truth may you/I be


safe at all times! By this declaration of the truth
may all disease be destroyed! By this declaration
of the truth may you/I have the blessing of
success!

puññasampadaṁ,

May all the celestial beings share this merit,

being the last [Buddha] in this auspicious aeon,
may the Bodhisatta Metteyya rejoice in [this
accrued] merit of mine.

May the deities living in this monastery rejoice in


this merit [that we have accrued] and protect
the Teachings of the Conqueror (i.e. the
Buddha).

May all beings neutral, beneficial and harmful to


me rejoice in this merit [that I have accrued]
and awaken to the deathless state (i.e. attain
Nibbāna).

Iminā puñña-kammena
Mā me bāla-samāgamo,

Aspirations
By means of this meritorious deed
May I never join with the foolish.
May I join always with the wise
Until the time I attain Nibbana.

May my merit bring about the destruction of the


pollutants.
May my merit be a condition for (gaining)
Nibbāna.

May the rain fall at suitable times.


May the world progress and be happy and
peaceful.
May the world leaders be righteous.
