You are doing your research on a concrete material using ash with cement.

After the
compressive and tensile test it was found that the ultimate compressive strength of the
concrete mixture is 30 MPa and the ultimate tensile strength is 15 MPa. The next stage
of your research involve in testing the sample under combined loadings condition.
Figure 4 shows the your concrete with a diameter of 50 mm subjected to a torque of 500
Nm and an axial compressive force of 2 kN.

A) Evaluate whether the concrete will fail or not under this combined
loadings condition using an appropriate theory/theories of failure.
Justify your selection of using that theory/theories.[20 marks]
B) From your result in (a) suggest the diameter of the concrete that you
can use to ensure it can withstand the test condition. Prove it using an
appropriate calculation [10 marks].

1. Zirconium-magnesium alloy is a ductile materials having a yield strength of 107 MPa.

If the machine part is made of this material and a critical point in the material is
subjected to in-plane principal stresses at 𝜎𝜎1 and 𝜎𝜎2 = -0.5𝜎𝜎1 . Determine the
magnitude of 𝜎𝜎1 that will cause yielding according to two (2) appropriate theories of
failure.
2. The gas tank is made from A-36 steel and has an inner diameter of 1.50 m. If the tank
is designed to withstand a pressure of 5 MPa, determine the required minimum wall
thickness to the nearest millimeter using two (2) appropriate theories of failure. Apply
a factor of safety of 1.5 against yielding in your calculation.
