Some people think that the best way to increase road safety is to increase

the minimum legal age for driving cars and riding motorbikes. To what
extent do you agree or disagree?

One school of thought holds that to increase road safety, the best solution is to
raise the minimum legal age of road drivers. While this thinking is somewhat
valid, I would argue that there are more efficient solutions to deal with this
problem.

On the one hand, it is understandable why some people would propose the
policy to raise the legal age of car motorbike drivers. Proponents of this policy
reform might cite a disproportionate number of vehicular accidents caused by
young commuters. These individuals deem not to be mature and experienced
enough to deal with spontaneous road occurrences. In other words, increasing
drivers' legal age is believed to reduce traffic accidents.

However, this thinking is flawed. Firstly, most vehicular crashes are caused by
reckless driving - a factor that is closely correlated with the driving behavior
rather than the age factor. This is compounded by the fact that vehicular
accidents are also attributed to substandard transport infrastructure. Thus, there
is hardly anything that raising the driving age can do to increase people’s safety
on roads in this case.

To reduce on-road accidents and protect people’s safety, the following steps
should be taken. The government should administer more stringent punishment
for traffic violators. Such drastic actions could help deter other people from doing
the same, thereby increasing road safety.  For example, those who run the red
light or over speeding should face hefty fines or imprisonment. This could be
executed in tandem with investing more funds in upgrading road facilities, such
as removing potholes and overgrown tree branches that create blind spots,
therefore can preclude any unwanted accidents.

In conclusion, I am convinced that other solutions can be implemented to

safeguard people’s wellbeing rather than increasing the legal driving age.
