Ukulele Program Design

**Week-Long Ukulele Program for Beginners**

**Day 1: Introduction and Basic Chords**


- Duration: 60 minutes

1. Introduction to the ukulele: Parts of the ukulele, how to hold it, and tuning.
2. Learn basic chords: C, G, Am, F.
3. Practice transitioning between chords.
4. Play simple strumming patterns using the taught chords.

**Day 2: Chord Progressions and Strumming Patterns**


- Duration: 60 minutes

1. Review chords from Day 1.


2. Introduce common chord progressions (e.g., C-G-Am-F).
3. Explore different strumming patterns: down-strokes, up-strokes, and combinations.
4. Play familiar songs using the learned chords and strumming patterns.

**Day 3: Melody and Fingerpicking**


- Duration: 60 minutes

1. Learn how to read tablature (tabs) for melody playing.


2. Practice playing simple melodies on the ukulele.
3. Introduction to fingerpicking technique.
4. Apply fingerpicking to a basic melody or chord progression.

**Day 4: Song Interpretation and Performance**


- Duration: 60 minutes

1. Choose a popular song with basic chord progressions.


2. Analyze the song's structure and identify chord changes.
3. Practice playing the song using chords, strumming, and fingerpicking.
4. Group performance of the chosen song, encouraging creativity in interpretation.

**Day 5: Songwriting and Review**


- Duration: 60 minutes

1. Briefly introduce songwriting concepts.


2. Divide students into groups to create simple chord progressions and melodies.
3. Each group presents their original composition.
4. Review the week's lessons, answer questions, and encourage practice.

**Note:**

- Throughout the week, dedicate some time to warm-up exercises to improve finger flexibility and
dexterity.
- Provide handouts with chord diagrams, strumming patterns, and song lyrics for students to practice at
home.
- Encourage students to practice regularly to reinforce their skills and build confidence.
- Offer individual assistance to students who need extra help.
- Celebrate the progress made during the week and create a positive, supportive learning environment.

Remember, the goal is to provide an engaging and enjoyable experience while gradually building the
skills and knowledge needed to play the ukulele. Feel free to adjust the program based on the pace of
