REACTION PAPER

(The Venus Project)

Jane L. Nacion
Architectural designer and futurist, Jacque Fresco, is considered as an

inspiration by many for his innovative ideas for a sustainable society and planet known

as the Venus Project. The Venus Project proposes an alternative vision of what future

we can have if we apply our knowledge in a good way. Frescos idea advocates the

uses of science and advancement of technology in clean and efficient ways. He calls

this system a resource-based economy, where all goods and service are available

without the use of money, barter, credit, debt, or servitude of any kind.

In the documentary, Roxanne Meadows, co-founder of the Venus Project stated

that the aspect of the Venus project is to eliminate scarcity. That means technology is

needed where we can make things available, we can create abundance as long as we

can create an abundance that will eliminate greed and selfishness. According to the

documentary, the resourced-based economy emphasized individuality, creativity, and

innovativeness. It is not monetary oriented, rather, it is problem solving oriented.

For me, the Venus Project could be interesting and helpful for the society,

because it can gives us hope that maybe the society can still change, that there will be

a chance for us to finally solve each other’s differences. I remember a line where it

says, “Paper proclamations and treaties do not alter the facts of scarcity, deprivation

and insecurities” and “Wars represents the supreme failure of nation to resolve their

differences”. It’s true, most of us think that treaty can solve and stop the war between

countries but why do soldiers and armies exists? Jacques Fresco once said, “I would

train them to be able to go to Mexico and bridge the differences, to bring all together, all

the nations”, can we actually do those?

The documentary revealed multiple interviews, and Jacque Fresco said that

before he came up with the project, his research comes first to the origins of our

problems. These are failed systems, the influence of the environment, and social

inadequacies. And that’s where a social alternative is made, the Venus Project. It is a

feasible plan for social change that works hard at peaceful and sustainable global

civilization where human beings, technology and nature co-exist. It also outlines an

alternative to strive for, that human rights is not only paper proclamations but a way of

life. I think if most of us will accept this project especially the government, maybe we

can start changing the society where we can create a world where war are distant

memories. And maybe then we can understand what means to be truly civilized is.

However, the project would be more complete and acceptable if people can

understand its meaning and purpose. Most of the people depend on laws and they feel

that they need the rule of law to eliminate the problems. We actually have thousand of

laws, but they are constantly being broken. The Venus Project needs no government

nor do monetary policies and ethical people but rather a way of intelligently managing

the earth’s resources for everyone’s well being. But if people will continue to depend in

the laws and governments maybe the Paradise we can create and live in would be

faded into oblivion.
