Introduction

In every jail facility here in the Philippines, Therapeutic Community is one of

the major rehabilitation programs that has been used for the rehabilitation of every

Person Deprived of Liberty or PDL who has behavioral problems and also for those

who are drug offenders. Today, illegal drug involvement is very common, and here in

Cagayan de Oro City, cases of illegal drug use are rampant. Therapeutic Community

Programs are practical for these kinds of problems in order to rehabilitate these

offenders who are involved in illegal drugs. The main goal of treatment, according to

the TC model, is to change recovering users' ways of thinking, acting, and

conducting daily life. This is expected to come through the internalization of

cognitive, behavioral, perceptual, and moral patterns provided by the TC (De Leon,

2000). As a component of his or her biographical work, the recovering user learns to

confess to himself or herself and others, and thereby to account for his or her actions

and thoughts.

For instance, this program could give them a chance to acquire job skills,

which will improve the chances that Person Deprived of Liberty or PDL will become

productive citizens upon release. The programs must aim to change those who want

to change. Those who are taught to produce useful goods and to be productive are

likely to develop the self-esteem essential to a normal, integrated personality. This

kind of program would provide many useful skills and habits and replace the sense

of hopelessness that many PDL have.

TCs currently serve a wide array of clients and their diverse problems; through

advances in research on treatment outcomes, the composition of staff has been

reshaped, the duration of residential treatment has been reduced, the treatment

goals have been reset, and, to a considerable extent, the approach to therapy itself

has been modified. This paper provides an overview of the TC as a distinct social-

psychological method for treating addiction and related disorders. Included in this is

a focus on the multifaceted psychological wounds that consistently show a strong

association with addiction and thereby require initiating a recovery process

characterized by life-style and identity changes.

Important for a Person Deprived of Liberty or PDL is to have a will to change

himself and then give him support to improve. Many of them do not know how to

start a new life; therapeutic community programs are the way, and they can

enlighten their future lives. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)

has adopted the "Therapeutic Community Modality Program,” or TCMP, as a new

approach to inmate management that requires a new glossary of terms relative to

felons and the introduction of a new way of life in confinement.
