1 Sources of Water

Let’s Learn
Animated Pictures. This is Wetty water. It will help you learn the different sources
of water.

Hello dears! I’m Wetty water. Have you ever wonder


where does water come from? Let us find out the
sources of water around you.

Do you know that most of the surface of the Earth is covered with
water? Three fourths of the earth is water. That is why Earth is called
“water planet”. Water comes from different sources. It may come
from open and closed sources. It may also come from a small or big
body of water. The three main sources of water are seawater,
freshwater and groundwater.

Seawater contains plenty of salt that makes up


the oceans and seas. It is also called hard
water because it has mineral deposits such as
calcium and magnesium within the water
molecules.

Freshwater does not contain salt. This is often


called surface water that comes mostly from rain.
It is stored in open but small bodies of water like,
rivers, lakes creeks and ponds and streams.
Rainwater falls into land and flows to streams and
rivers. It also comes from melting of snow or ice

Groundwater is the water that occurs below the
surface of Earth. It comes from water that fills
spaces of between rocks and soil particles. This
is found in the underground layer called water
table. Groundwater is safe and clean. It is the
water within the Earth that supplies wells and

2 Uses of Water in the Context of Daily Activities

LET’S LEARN

Hi, learners! Do you think you can live without


water? What will you do to protect and
conserve the water? Well, let us explore the
uses of water in our daily activities.

Water is found everywhere. It can be in different forms. It can


be in a form of river, lake, pond, spring and ocean. Wherever water
flows, there are life. We all need water to live. Plants and animals
need water too. Water is one of our basic needs and a resource for
our survival.
Freshwater is used in our daily lives like cleaning, bathing,
washing, cooking and watering plants. People, plants and
animals need water for growth and health. Without water
all living things will die.
Freshwater can also be a source of power
generation and hydroelectricity dams provide water
for activities such as irrigation, industrial use,
agricultural use and for human consumption.

Ground water from the well and spring are safe


sources of water for drinking. Springs are often
used as sources of bottled water.

Seawater serves as habitat for aquatic plants and


animals. Seas and oceans are also used for
recreation such as swimming and boating. They
serve as routes for local and international
transportation
