Types of Claims
Module 3 Week 5
Presented by: Ma'am Raya
CLAIM
an arguable statement – an idea that a
speaker or writer asks an audience to
accept (del Gandio, 2008).
It is an opinion, idea, or assertion. It is also
called a position. It is a statement that is not
considered accepted by all.
In strategic discourse, a claim is a statement
we make to an audience with an anticipation
that they should agree with it.
For example:
• I think we should have universal health care.
• I believe the government is corrupt.
• We need a revolution.
