The Globe Theatre

• World renowned theatre and cultural site located on the bank of River Thames,
London.

• Associated with the legendary poet, playwright and actor William Shakespeare.

• Built by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, Shakespeare’s playing company.

• Hosted many well known plays such as, ‘Julius Caesar.’

• Destroyed in fire in 1613 and was rebuilt the very next year, in 1614.
Other Playhouses
• The first playhouse, the Red Lion, was built in 1567 by John Brayne. He converted
the Red Lion Inn, in Stepney, outside the city walls. There is little evidence of how
successful it was, but the demand must have been there, because many more
playhouses opened between the 1570s and the 1620s.

• The Curtain Theatre was an Elizabethan playhouse located in Hewett Street,

Shoreditch, just outside the City of London. It opened in 1577, and continued staging
plays until 1624.
