QUESTION 1 [10]

Consider a CC–CE amplifier such as that in Fig. 1

with the following specifications: I1 = I2 = 1 mA and
identical transistors with β =100, fT = 400 MHz, and
Cμ = 2 pF. Let the amplifier be fed with a source Vsig
having a resistance Rsig= 4 kΩ and assume a load
resistance of 4 kΩ. Find the voltage gain AM, and 3-dB
frequency fH. (given values: gm = 40 mA/V) (5+5)

effects. (4)

2.3 Assuming loop gain “βA” is large, determine an 100 1k
equation for the approximate value of the voltage −5V
gain of the amplifier with feedback Av = vo / vs. (3)
Figure 2

Solution

2.1 Topology:
Input loop comprises source VS and GS input of Q1 in series with RS1 which is connected to the
output, hence the feedback is series or voltage mixing.
If Vo = 0 (i.e. short cct. the output) then the feedback signal is killed, thus the feedback is shunt or
voltage sampling.

2.2 β loading effects:

at the i/p: kill feedback at the o/p i.e. short o/p to ground, then RF // RS1 in source of Q1. Thus
RS1 = 100 // 3k9 = 97,5 Ω
at the o/p: kill feedback at the i/p i.e. open cct. at source of Q1, then (RF+RS1) = 4 kΩ appears
across the output // to RS3

Hence “A” network without feedback but including RD1 RC2
