Photocopiable 29: Environmental science

word puzzles
Aim: Learners revise the environmental science vocabulary from Lesson 8.2 (and other words).
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Completion time: 20 minutes
Language focus: Environmental science vocabulary: typhoon, heatwave, hurricane, tornado,
atmosphere, drought, evaporate, moisture
Materials: One Environmental science words puzzles sheet for each learner.
Procedure:
• Tell learners they are going to work in pairs and work out word puzzles.
• Distribute one Environmental science words puzzles sheet to each learner.
• Demonstrate the activity by eliciting the answer to the first puzzle, and tell learners to circle or
highlight the extra letter (T).
• Circulate and offer support while learners solve the puzzles in pairs.
• When learners have finished, encourage them to think of words they have learned recently, and use
them to create anagrams to put in the puzzles at the bottom of the page for their classmates to guess.
• Tell learners not to worry if the words don’t fit exactly – they can put an extra letter in the grids,
like in the activity they have just done.
• Cut the bottom part of the page along the dashed line, and tell learners to pass their grids to other
learners to try.
Answers:
A 1 heatwave, 2 hurricane, 3 tornado, 4 atmosphere, 5 drought, 6 evaporate, 7 moisture;
