Reflection: What can I contribute for the transformation of the Philippines?
I've been considering over the past several years what would make the
Philippines stand out as one of the top nations in the world. Our nation, which is
renowned for its rich cultural variety and stunning surroundings, has in fact shown
the rest of the globe that we can overcome the challenges that come with being an
archipelago. And as the years went by, it appeared that our nation was getting
more and more competitive in comparison to the dozy and defenseless country I
had witnessed when I was a little child.
Indeed, the recent years have provided us with the best possibilities to
improve the very best that our nation has to offer. As the Philippines finally broke
the lengthy basketball drought we have been enduring, the greatest of Filipino skill
and support have been very evident and vocal in the 2014 FIBA World Cup. People
like Jimmy Alapag and Gabe Norwood demonstrated to the world that despite the
other races' height, Filipinos can still excel and outperform them by a wide margin
in battle and on the field of victory. Not only that, but as we sought to yell out the
ear-drum-shattering voices of a proud and fearless Filipino people, our beloved
countrymen also demonstrated that no one can ever break our hearts and strong
beliefs.
Additionally, the Philippines is a prominent location for beauty pageants. We
suffered in the latter years, but these days, our stunning women have returned to
get revenge and demonstrate to the world the true magic of the Filipina. As the
Underground River continues to rule as one of the Seven Wonders of the World
and as the Tubattaha Reef continues to wow outsiders with its practical beauty,
the beauty of Philippine nature is also poised to be adorned. Our country's unusual
and natural beauty has firmly established that we are capable of surpassing any
wealth or strength that other nations may have.
And as a Filipino, I questioned what else I might do to support the
transformation of my nation into one that is far better and healthier. Anyone of us
needs to know and learn that, I suppose.
I came to the realization that I must constantly put other people ahead of our
politicians, athletes, and other prominent figures in our nation if I want to preserve
Filipino pride. To accompany them on their trip as they travel the arduous road to
achievement and victory, I must have the proper confidence and sense of pride. I
must also be equally patient and encouraging through their times of failure. In this
sense, I am confident in my ability to affect how people perceive and view our
countrymen, and I will do it as part of the team.
I must hold onto one thing, namely pleasure, in order to preserve the nature's
ever-promising beauty. I am happy that I was born in a country that values
freedom and liberty above all else. I am also happy that I live in a place that
emanates exotic splendor like a "sampaguita," a little flower that attracts people
with an unmistakable aroma emanating from its petals despite its diminutive size.
Surely I'm a decent environmentalist. I won't forget that everything that can
help conserve the environment, no matter how small or insignificant, counts. I
won't forget that even a simple candy wrapper has to be disposed of correctly, that
paper needs to be used wisely, that animals need to be loved and cared for, that
dirt needs to be removed from water areas, and that trees need to be planted in
the appropriate places. Because the Philippines' beauty stands out above all
others, I won't ignore how to keep it that way and preserve it for the future.
We also came to the realization that struggles and conflicts form the
foundation of the nation in which we now reside. The Pork Barrel Scam
controversy, the enduring issues of hunger and poverty, the escalating hostility
between the United States and China, and the unresolved cases of political dynasty
and corruption are all essentially obstacles to the advancement we hope to
achieve. And for that, we must put in a lot of effort.
I learned as a student that I must complete my coursework if I want to
develop my character and uphold the law. Jose Rizal once taught me to escape
from ignorance and oblivion and to implant in me the worth of intellect in order to
overcome the current challenges we severely suffer from today. I need to get up
early in the morning so I can prepare for class, wear the proper uniform and ID that
my school requires, be attentive during lecture hours and be just as active during
activities, spend my nights and free time reviewing and multitasking, show some
respect to my beloved professors and authorities, and smile and say "hello" to my
classmates. These are the things I need to do. to generally do well in school so that
I can someday mature into a responsible person.
Assessment Tasks
 Discuss briefly how Rizal reminded the Filipinos in Spain about their vices which
destroy the good image of their nation.
Filipinos in Madrid are criticized by Rizal for gambling. Rizal was informed in
Brussels by Juan Luna and Valentin Ventura that the Filipinos living in Spain were
ruining their country's reputation by engaging in excessive gambling. These two of
his countrymen in Paris persuaded him to take action.
 Briefly discuss of Rizal presentiment about his bad dreams during the night in
Brussel.
As a result of his constant thoughts of his sad family in Calamba, Rizal experienced
nightmares throughout the evenings in Brussels while he was restless. Despite the
fact that he had no superstitions, he worried that he would not live very long.
 Explain briefly the bad news from home which depressed Rizal.
Rizal was troubled by letters he received from home while in Brussels. Agrarian
unrest in Calamba was escalating. Until Rizal's father refused to pay his rent, the
Dominican hacienda's administration kept raising the land rates. As a result of Don
Francisco's bravery, other tenants also refused to pay the excessive rent. The
Dominican Order filed a lawsuit in court to take the Rizal family's Calamba
property away. The Rizal family was one of the tenants who was being victimized
in the meanwhile. Rizal was disheartened by the upsetting news from home.
