Athlete Code of Conduct

Welcome to Canyon Athletics. Your coaching staff and administration commend your
commitment and dedication to your team. You have decided to be something beyond yourself.
You are a member of a team that relies on you.

Participation in an athletic program is a privilege, not a right. Students who earn the right to
wear the Cowboy uniform assume the responsibility of representing Canyon High School. We
have a proud tradition of excellence spanning over 50 years. As an athlete you represent our
school 24 hours a day, everyday, whether it is season or not. You are expected to be a role
model for your peers, earn respect from our staff, and make our community proud to cheer for
you.

Canyon athletes must make good decisions about their academics, behavior, attendance, and
health. Canyon believes that athletics, along with all other aspects of the high school
experience, is about learning and growing. Our programs promote the ideals of sportsmanship,
citizenship, fairness, respect, and responsibility. Our coaches are devoted to fostering the
development and celebration of these traits. It is not about wins or losses. It’s about learning.

Canyon Athletes should read through and initial each responsibility below indicating their
understanding of the commitment required to proudly wear the green and the gold uniform.

Student-Athlete Responsibilities:
Every athlete, prior to the first day of summer camp or practice, MUST complete their
Athletic Clearance. This includes uploading a current physical completed by a physician.

Failure to do so will result in loss of summer camp, practice and/or games.

Every athlete must submit this signed form to the athletic director or administration.
Every athlete must meet GPA eligibility requirements of a 2.0 at the quarter grading
period. Failure to meet this requirement at the end of the 4th quarter in June will
determine eligibility for the fall season. Failure to meet this requirement will result in loss
of eligibility and immediate removal from games. Failure to meet these requirements for
two or more quarters may result in dismissal from the team to focus on academics and

progress toward graduation.
Every athlete must attend a full school day if they plan to participate in an athletic contest
or activity during the same day. If a student-athlete must miss one or two periods during
an athletic game day, it must be excused by the parent or guardian prior to the missed
periods.
➔ Habitual tardies, truancies, and/or unexcused absences may result in
dismissal from Canyon athletics. This will be at the discretion of
administration, not coaches. Canyon is an academic-first campus.
⬜ Every athlete will be a role model for their peers at all times. Violating school rules,
including but not limited to the use of drugs, alcohol, involvement in peer conflict,
disruption to school events, or possession of any weapon or participation in any
disrespectful action may result in IMMEDIATE removal from the team along with
additional disciplinary actions. At minimum, violations that warrant a behavior notice or

contract will result in a 45 day suspension from the athletic program.
Athletes are expected to demonstrate the highest level of sportsmanship at all times.
Athletes WILL demonstrate control under pressure in practice and in games towards
their teammates, opponents, coaches, officials, and spectators. In addition, athletes
WILL refrain from harassment, racial or ethnic slurs, and excessive cursing. This

behavior is unacceptable and will be addressed by coaching staff and administration.
Athletes will maintain open and honest communication with administrators, advisors,
coaches, student-athletes, parents, guardians, and staff regarding their academic and

athletic performance, needs, and difficulties.
Athletes are expected to participate in all team activities including, but not limited to,

practice, games, spirit events, fundraising opportunities, and meetings.
Athletes will uphold their commitment to their teammates, coaches, and school by
holding themselves accountable to community expectations and the importance of

supporting their teammates throughout the entirety of their season and beyond.
Canyon High School follows all California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) standards,
rules, and regulations to ensure student-athletes have an equitable competitive
experience. Those bylaws are available on the CIF website.
